MOBILE SHOE BRAKE, CONTROLLED BY A CAM OSCILLATING LEVER, FOR BICYCLES, MOTORCYCLES AND SIMILAR VEHICLES.
The present invention relates to a brake with movable jaws for bicycles, motorcycles and similar vehicles, characterized in that the jaws carrying the braking elements at one end can oscillate around pivcts integral with a base plate fixed to the chassis of the vehicle. and are controlled against each other, in antagonism, by elastic return means, by a cam acting between two opposite shoulders provided at the other end of the jaws and secured to a control lever oscillating around a fixed pivot of the base plate, said lever being actuated by the flexible "Bowden" cable, the sheath of which reacts against a support fixed on the base plate.
An exemplary embodiment of the subject of the invention is shown schematically in the appended drawing in which: FIG. 1 is a front elevational view of the device of the invention; Figure 2 is a longitudinal vertical section along the line 2x - 2x of Figure 1; Figure 3 is an elevational view of the single base plate; Figure 4 is an elevational view of the cam control lever.
According to these figures, 1 is a base plate, shown separately in figure 3, provided with a central orifice 2, by means of which it is mounted against the central projection 3 of a pin 4, 5, threaded at both ends, part 4 constituting the bolt for fixing the brake assembly to the fork of the bicycle. The plate 1 has on the one hand upwards, an arm 6, and on the other hand, downwards, two eyelets 7, equidistant from the hole 2, to which are fixed by screwing or crimping, the pivots 8 around which the two curved jaws 9 of the brake can oscillate.
Each of these jaws 9 shows downwards the usual support 9, straightened outwards, at right angles, capable of receiving the usual braking element, intended to be pressed against the wheel. Each jaw superiorly carries a straight cleat or shoulder 10, substantially parallel to the opposite analogous shoulder of the other jaw. On the front part of the pivot rod 5 is mounted, free to oscillate, the control lever

elbow 11, held in place by the washer and the nut, respectively 12-13; the lever 11 has a projecting cam portion 14, the two substantially parallel sides of which are urged by the opposite shoulders 10 of the two jaws 9 of the brake.
A sturdy spring 15 of steel wire, in the form of a yoke and passing with its central part through a slot 3 of the projection 3 of the rod, engages with its two ends straightened perpendicularly 15 in suitable holes. provided at the end of the jaws, which this spring tends to keep constantly separate (Figure 1-solid lines), while the rectilinear shoulders-10 of the jaws press on the parallel sides of the cam 14.
The flexible "Bowden" transmission cable 16 of the brake is fixed in an element 17, provided at the end of the control lever 11, while the outer sheath 18 abuts against the adjustment screw 19 of the support 20 fixed to the arm 6 of the brake. the base plate 1.
The brake operating mode is as follows When the cable 16 is stretched, it acts positively on the end of the control lever 11, while the reaction of the sheath 18 is supported by the support 20, integral with the arm 6 of the base plate 1. The lever 11 is placed in oscillation (dotted lines-figure 1) and the sides of the cam 14, acting in opposite directions on the shoulders 10 of the brake shoes, cause the oscillation towards the inside, against the elastic action of the arms of the spring 15, of the brake shoes and consequently the application of the brake elements on the wheel (dotted lines-figure 1). When the tension of the cable 16 ceases, the spring arms 15 act again and the shoes 9 of the brake are again moved apart, resulting in the release of the brake (solid lines-figure 1).
In conventional bicycle brakes, the oscillating jaws are controlled directly and independently, one from the cable pull and the other from the thrust of the "Bowden" transmission.
In the brake according to the present invention, the thrust of the sheath 18 'occurs against a fixed support 19, 20, the traction of the cable 16 acting on an independent control lever 11, which, by means of a cam 14, controls the two independent jaws 9 of the brake in the opposite direction. By balancing the forces exerted by the control lever on the traction cable 16, through the cam transmission mechanism 14, the braking action on the wheel of the elements provided at the ends of the jaws 9. , is considerably larger than that produced in the usual brakes.
It is obvious that the present invention is in no way limited to the arrangements described above and shown, but that variants can be made thereto, without departing from the scope of the invention.
