<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

"Method and apparatus for casting metals"
Metals can be continuously cast by pouring molten metal at the top of a mold open at its ends, with a continuously forming ingot being taken out in the same manner at the bottom of the mold. The rate at which the molten metal can be poured into the mold is necessarily limited by the rate of extraction of the finished ingot and this, in turn, is limited by the rate

solidification of the metal and cooling of the ingot.
The present invention is essentially aimed at cooling ingots formed in this manner, but it is also applicable to the cooling of any hot ingot of any metal or the like as it leaves a molding machine or machine. 'another machine intended to give it a shape.
In accordance with the invention, downward and inward direction of the longitudinal axis line of an ingot or other product exiting, downwardly, from a continuous narrow molding machine or other similar machine, jets, in the form of sheets /, of a cooling medium. The latter can be water and the jets must be projected under a pressure high enough to break up any vapor film forming on the ingot or other product as the water hits it as it moves.
The apparatus produced in accordance with the invention comprises a chamber to which the refrigerant medium is supplied under pressure, the chamber of which the internal wall has slits inclined in the direction of movement of the ingot or other product; in such a way that, passing through this wall, the refrigerant medium forms converging inclined jets. In a continuous molding machine, this chamber is disposed vertically below the mold and the slots are preferably arranged in rows spaced apart from each other vertically.
The internal wall of the chamber may be cylindrical, but it is preferably given the shape of a truncated cone widening outwards in the direction of movement of the ingot or other product because the space in which the steam produced by the cooling water can expand and be condensed by the lower jets thus increasing in the direction of travel.
We will now describe the preferred apparatus produced in accordance with the invention and shown by way of example.

in the attached drawing in which: FIG. 1 is an elevational view, in vertical section, for the greater part, of the apparatus; fig. 2 shows the internal wall of the refrigerating medium chamber on an enlarged scale, part in elevation and part in section; fig. 3, finally, is a vertical section on an even larger scale of the internal part of the chamber.
The cooling apparatus shown is attached to a machine for the continuous casting of a copper ingot, the lower part of which is shown at 26. The ingot, shown by the dot-dash lines 28, passes through a compartment 22 in which is held. a reducing gas atmosphere and arrives inside the cooling apparatus. This apparatus comprises a frustoconical part 2 having slits, with a flange 3 by means of which it is bolted on the upper part of a molded part 4 which forms a chamber 6 for the cooling water. This chamber has an entrance opening 7 and is divided by a partition 5 pierced with a number of openings 8.
The part 2 forms the internal wall of the chamber 6 and is pierced with a number of elongated slots 12 arranged in rows located at a distance from each other in the vertical direction, the slots of the alternating rows being vertically offset. compared to others.
Each slot is at the base of a groove 10 formed in wall 2 and its lower end opens into a continuous circular groove 14 formed around the inner surface of wall 2. Each slot slopes downward and toward within an angle of about 35 to the centerline of the ingot passing through the cooling apparatus. Pressurized water is brought to chamber 6 and flows through the openings
8, then through the slits, so as to form a number

jets in the form of narrow sheets inclined downwards, jets which converge and which strike the ingot.
The pressure must be great enough to rupture any vapor film forming on the ingot and, to avoid a loss of pressure in the cooling apparatus, the total area of the slits for the passage of water is less than that of the ingot. 'inlet opening 7. It has been found that the difference between these two areas can advantageously be about 10% of the area of the opening 7. By way of example, the opening 7 may have a diameter. about 3 mm. and each of the slits shown may have a length of 31 mm. approximately and a width of 0.79 mm. about.
After having struck the ingot, the water flows downwards into a compartment 17 provided at the lower part of the part 4 and escapes through outlet openings 18, the total surface of which is notably greater than that of the bars. slots 12.
On entering the cooling apparatus, the ingot passes through a sealing ring 27 which serves to separate the interior of compartment 22 from the interior of the cooling apparatus.
Below the latter, the ingot is gripped by guide rollers 21 which are provided at this point because it is desirable that the ingot be gripped and held upright as quickly as possible after leaving the mold in which it has been placed. been trained. At the lower part of compartment 17, the ingot passes through a gasket 20 which forms a watertight seal.
