<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

A method and apparatus 1. for casting light metals.
The invention relates to a method and an apparatus for casting light metals, essentially characterized in that the tap hole of a ladle or of a casting crucible, containing liquid metal, is brought close to the mold. at the start of casting.
This method and this apparatus are then characterized by the fact that during this casting, and after having opened up the tap hole, the distance from the tap hole to the lower part of the part which is poured is increased as time goes by. and as the mold fills, such that the distance between this taphole and the surface of the molten metal in the mold is constantly minimum or even zero. The pouring ladle can, for this purpose, be lowered inside the mold and, after opening the pouring hole, be removed therefrom very slowly and automatically as this mold fills it.
Instead of using this method, the pouring ladle and the pouring spout can keep an invariable position just above the mold and the bottom of this mold can be moved away from this pocket as the mold is filled. Compression of the metal in the mold by the metal-filled casting crucible provides advantages.
The apparatus used for the implementation of this method is
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
advantageously constituted by a pouring ladle (provided with a pouring hole and by a mold provided with a bottom, these two elements being placed in such a way that they can approach each other at the beginning of the flow and move away from each other through the site, at the

made towards the mold.
It is useful for the hollow piston to have at its lower end an expanding or sealing ring housed in a groove and for the underside of this ring to be covered by a rim.
In this case, the lower face of the hollow piston has on its periphery a chamfer inclined towards the expandable ring and the wall of the mold, so that the hollow piston has a tight seal in contact with the mold and the casting chamber.
Due to the fact that the main parts of the casting apparatus, that is to say the mold, its base and the hollow piston provided with its large capacity reservoir (reservoir which, by allowing the metal to stagnate, represents a intermediate phase of its treatment before its casting), can be moved vertically with respect to each other, so as to satisfy anyway the technique of casting, we create the necessary conditions to obtain that the speed of casting corresponds to the properties of the molten material. It is thus possible, furthermore, to cast the metal ingot after ingot in the simplest way and to realize an inexpensive production.
Several embodiments of casting apparatuses in accordance with the invention are shown in the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 shows a vertical section of one embodiment of the apparatus.
Figure 2 gives a horizontal section along the line AB in Figure 1.
Figure 3 gives a vertical section of another embodiment of the invention.
FIG. 4 represents another exemplary embodiment of the invention,
FIG. 5 represents another exemplary embodiment thereof.
In the embodiments shown in Figures 1 and 3, the hollow piston 4a, movable up and down, comprising an upper reservoir 4 of large capacity, is lowered into the mold 1 (the lower end of which is closed by the movable bottom 3) and advantageously carries an interior coating. The room

inner bre of the piston almost reaches the bottom of this piston and narrows at its lower end to end in a channel 11 of narrow section which widens towards its outlet orifice 11a, that is to say in the direction âe the mold 15. This channel is, as a cutter, closed by the valve @@ whose extension towards the @aut constitutes the valve stem 9.
The lower part of the conical valve, which has the shape of a star and penetrates into the aforementioned narrow channel, comprises guide vanes 20a, the thickness of which is reduced when going from the interior of this channel towards its. outlet orifice lla, -so that the liquid jet is thus offered at the lower end of this channel, a solid section and wider than that of the central part. The lower end 17 of the hollow piston carries a groove in which is embedded an expandable ring 18 serving as a sealing ring. The lower face of this ring is covered by a flange 19 machined in the lower face of the piston.
This lower face itself had on its periphery a chamfer inclined towards the expandable ring and the wall of the mold,
In the embodiment shown in FIG. 3, the hollow piston, housed inside the mold, itself fixed to the support 2, is fitted at its lower end with a heatable insert 14. This hollow piston is suspended, by means of the claw closure 7, from the arms 5 visible to the right and to the left in the drawing. These arms 5 are themselves fixed to the support 6. The valve stem 9 can slide in the shackle arranged above the large-capacity tank and the swinging arm 10, which carries the valve, engages, via the one of its ends, in the stem of this valve, and by the other end under the crank.
The bottom 3, which closes the mold, is carried by an arm which can be lowered into the mold and then moved away from it by rotation. This arm can be held for example by a vertical axis arranged on the side and along the mold. It can be lowered by turning with a crank bevel gears which mesh suitably with each other, At the upper end of this vertical axis is mounted the arm used for its rotation.
The assembly of the casting apparatus is such that the three parts
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
main of this device, that is to say the hollow piston 4a and its large capacity 4, the mold 1 and its bottom 3, can move relative to each other vertically in any way .
According to the invention, the hollow piston 4a is placed in the mold 1 when it is filled with molten metal, as shown in the drawing. This molten metal is in the chamber 12, which has a suitable section, and the lower end of which tapers in the shape of a bowl to end in a narrow channel 11.
The metal mass can thus be kept away from agitation and vortices, resulting in the formation of foam, communicated to it by the phenomenon of flow. With this craux piston 4a, extended at its upper end by a capacity 4 with a large capacity, a phase of the treatment of the metal is therefore created, intermediate between its melting in the furnace and its casting in the casting chamber. The speed of the liquid vein will then increase over a short length of this vein at the time of casting, during which the metal located at different levels of the liquid mass flows towards the channel 11 of small section, so that the recrystallization of the constituents of the alloy which may have started or even occurred in chamber 12 is eliminated.
By causing the conical valve 20, the lower end of which is in the shape of a star, to move up and down in the hollow piston, the flow of liquid metal to the casting chamber 15 is caused, regulated or stopped through the narrow channel 11. The effect of the guide vanes 20a of the valve 20, vanes arranged in stars and which penetrate into the channel 11, is, moreover, to divide the metal jet into several veins and to thoroughly mix the liquid elements. as they pass through the aforementioned channel. by the variation in resistance offered by the walls of this channel. In this way, the mixing produced by this channel in the metal which flows through it is considerably increased.
So that the liquid jet, leaving the narrow channel 11, does not diverge suddenly on leaving this channel, forming a jet of large section, but rather that the section of this jet increases only pro
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
gradually; thus producing an increasing reduction in the speed of flow of the metal towards the casting chamber, this narrow channel widens more and more in its lower part 11a as one goes towards its outlet orifice, that is to say say towards the casting chamber.
In addition, the guide vanes 20a of the preferably conical valve 20, vanes which are arranged in a star, simultaneously decrease in thickness when moving in the direction above, so that the At the end of the aforementioned narrow channel, the section of passage offered to the molten metal is constantly enlarged in all directions without being reduced by the valve or its guide vanes. This avoids the occurrence of vortices when the viciai enters the casting cnambre, so that one surely obtains a regular superposition of the different layers of metal and, subsequently, a uniform solidification of the mass.
The metal coming from the cavity 12 and which is in the casting chamber is compressed! by the piston 4a filled with metal.
It squirts out of this piston into the casting chamber through the narrow passage that it spares the channel 11 ot the valve 2 @, thus undergoing a known efiet. The liquid flows uniformly in all directions, its different layers are suitably superimposed and, subsequently, a regular solidification takes place (which however takes place from the outside and from the bottom towards the center of the ingot).
The method described above makes it possible to avoid the formation of zones containing primary crystallization nuclei, zones whose existence or appearance is due to an irregular liquid flow. Said process also makes it possible to obtain a metal whose grain is the same at all points of the mass and prevents the formation of segregations or shrinkages.
The aforementioned advantages are still considerably increased by using a heatable insert 14. This element allows to obtain a softening of the molten metal before casting it, It creates the necessary conditions to be able to maintain, without danger of solidification. ification, a very low casting temperature "whose value would be equal to the strict minimum, which allows to have a very small casting head. tions which make it possible to obtain the aforementioned advantages in a much more notable way still, by the rapidity of the solidification which then occurs.
The same setting also increases the casting speed. The aforementioned heatable insert, the valve and the aforementioned narrow channel, which both have a conical shape flaring out from below, at the same time make it possible to achieve the end of the casting perfectly. The metal flow port remains open and the ingot can collect metal to saturation. In addition, one can still close the valve and lift slightly above the upper end of the solidified ingot, the piston 4a, its channel 11 and the valve 20.
So that the molten lethal does not contain, apart from the gases (or air; which are already retained there in different ways, other pockets of gas, which can force themselves along the casting chamber between the wall of the mold and the outer wall of the aforementioned piston, thereby increasing the casting pressure, the hollow piston 4a carries at its lower end 17 an expandable or sealing ring housed in a groove. If the metal to be cast has a certain pressure, it will then rise between the vertical walls of the piston and the mold, from the lower face 8 of this piston to the lower face of the expandable ring 18, located a little higher, thus forming a sort of circular edge on the upper face of the ingot.
By the downward movement of the mold and the ingot, this edge would be found torn due to its adhesion to the walls, so that the surface of the ingot obtained would not be clean or free from defects, harmful to subsequent operations. Consequently, on the periphery of the lower face 8 of the hollow piston 4a, a chamfer inclined towards the lower edge of the expandable ring is made, the ring of which the lower face is advantageously covered by a flange 19.
It will thus form under the lower face 8 of the. hollow piston, beyond the aforementioned chamfer, along the expandable ring and up to the wall of the mold, a metal crust (which is due to cooling towards the periphery of the lower face of the piston, or whose cooling promotes the training). This crust is not torn and it is pushed up and down by pressure

of the hollow piston, which makes it possible to obtain, even by keeping the casting temperature at the lowest possible value, a perfect filling of this chamber.
When the mold occupies its lower position and when, therefore, the lower face of the piston 8 has almost reached the level of the upper end of the mold 1, the narrow channel 11 is closed by means of the valve; 20 to the degree wanted so that the metal can still flow to complete the casting until the ingot no longer collects metal. This narrow channel is then completely closed. The bottom 3 is lowered and removed from the mold by rotation, and the cast ingot is removed from its mold from below.
When the thing turns out to be useful for casting, in the construction of the apparatus, the conditions necessary to be able to lower the bottom 3 to an additional length, in order to give the ingot a greater length, and after that only, one separates this bottom of the mold by making it turn.
FIG. 4 shows an exemplary embodiment of the invention. wherein the outer diameter of the ladle 21 is greater than the inner diameter of the mold 22. The narrow drain channel 23 of this ladle is brought, in this case, just above the mold, and the 'you can, by slowly lowering the bottom of the mold, increase the distance which separates the bottom of the part to be molded from the tap hole. With this new device, it is also possible to take advantage of all the advantages of the new process.
Fig. 5 shows an embodiment of the invention specially designed for casting light metal ingots.
In this embodiment, the section of the hollow piston 85 which serves as a casting ladle is also larger than that of the mold 24. In this case, the casting ladle can be applied just above the upper face of the casting. mold, so as to create a completely closed chamber below the ejection channel of this pocket. In this device, the ejection channel can be centered with the aid of stops 26. By lowering the bottom of the mold 27, the distance from the ejection channel to the bottom of the part to be molded can be changed over time. as the mold fills.
