<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

Mold for the continuous casting of metal blocks or the like.
In the manufacture of metal blocks or of solid or hollow bars by continuous casting, water-cooled molds are used. This water, after entering the mold, is guided therethrough by being directed by suitably arranged sheets, after which it leaves the mold. The cooling of the cast bar by the water used is only carried out, in this case, indirectly, by means of the inner wall of the mold serving as a heat transmitter. However, direct additional cooling of the bar with water has also already been used, after the bar has left the cooled mold. We do this cooling
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
additionally by drilling holes in the bottom of the mold through which the cooling water flows along the bar.
This, however, has the drawback that the jets of cooling water striking the bar exert an action which, from several points of view, is detrimental to this bar.
The present invention relates to a cooled mold for the continuous casting of blocks or the like, in which the exit of the cooling water occurs through a narrow annular slot provided at the point of connection of the inner wall of the. mold with the bottom of it. Thanks to this arrangement, the outlet of the cooling water occurs in the form of a sheet of water closed on itself, exerting intense cooling of the bar. The angle formed by the slit with the bar could be any without departing from the spirit of the invention.
However, according to a preferred embodiment, this angle does not exceed 45, given that with this inclination, any dead cooling angle is eliminated, which cannot be obtained with known cooling methods comprising holes drilled in. the bottom of the mold.
The outlet section of this annular slot is preferably calculated in such a way that it is not greater than the section of the cooling water supply duct.
In this way, the mold remains filled with cooling water, without having to provide any additional means.
In the mold according to the invention, the cooling jacket constitutes only a relatively small cooling chamber. Thus, taking into account the arrangement which has just been indicated and according to which the cooling water inlet section and the slot outlet section are suitably calculated, a renewal is obtained.

fast cooling water inside the mold.
This is particularly advantageous since any danger of steam formation and the formation of scale are thus avoided.
Directly connected to the body of the mold, according to a preferred embodiment, is a sealed container in which the water falling on the solidified bar, in the form of a sheet of water, is collected, and from which it is collected. is then discharged in a suitable manner.
In the accompanying drawing, there is shown, by way of example, an embodiment of a mold according to the invention, this drawing, as well as the description which follows, showing other features of the mold. construction and other advantages of the device according to the invention.
The inner chamber of the mold delimited by the inner wall 2 of the latter receives, by known means, from above, the molten metal, the supply device not being shown in the drawing. This molten metal solidifies inside the mold so as to form a metal bar 1. It will be noted that inside the mold, in fact, only an external rigid crust is formed, while the core of the bar still remains in the liquid state - Around the inner wall 2 of the mold there is a jacket 5 through which the cooling water is fed, by a tubular connection 11, into the formed chamber between walls 2 and 3.
The wall 2 of the mold is held in a concentric position with respect to the sleeve 3, by means of screws 4 screwed into the body of the sleeve. The cooling water enters a tank 7 located directly below the mold, through the annular slot 5 according to the invention, located between the wall of the mold 2 and the bottom 6 thereof. In the embodiment shown, the slot 5 forms with the axis of the mold
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
an angle of 30. The cooling water which accumulates in the cooling tank 7 flows, through the overflow slots 8, into an annular gutter 9, and is discharged through tubular connectors 10.
In order to make it more difficult for the water to pass through the annular slot 16, an air chamber 12 is placed below the reservoir 7 into which air blown by means of tubular connectors 15 is brought in. a fan. The static pressure of this air must be sufficiently great so that it can counterbalance the pressure of the liquid column h in the reservoir 7. The sealing washer 13 and the fixing ring 14 placed below the air chamber 12 are only intended to keep the amount of air used within reasonable limits.
The interior wall 2 of the mold is preferably made of a material which is a good conductor of heat. Thus, for the casting of copper or copper alloys, it is possible to choose, for the constitution of this wall, also copper, while, for the casting of metals such as zinc and aluminum and their alloys , apart from copper, aluminum or iron can also be used.
When iron is used for the inner wall 2 of the mold for casting zinc or aluminum, it is advantageous to limit the thickness of this iron wall 2 of the mold, because of the heat-conducting properties less good iron. For the other parts of the mold any usual material can be used.
The mold according to the invention can be made in any desired length. It can be used not only for the casting of solid bars, but also, by employing for this purpose suitable cores known per se, for the casting of hollow bars. In the latter case, the internal cooling known per se of the cast bar, with the aid of cooling water
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
which flows from the interior of the cooled core, can also be arranged, and preferably according to the invention, such that the cooling water of the core, serving for the interior cooling of the cast bar , flows in the form of a sheet of water closed on itself, through a narrow annular slot provided at the point of connection of the side wall of the core and the bottom thereof.
The internal cooling of the bar obtained in this way is particularly intense and above all particularly uniform.
The annular slot according to the invention gives the great advantage of limiting to a minimum the possible deformations of the mold compared to the deformations which could occur in the molds made in the form of a rigid whole. In general, the slot dimensions in advance. However, one can arrange to allow adjustment of the exit section of the annular slot during casting; for this purpose, the inner wall 2 of the mold, the bottom 6 thereof, or even both at the same time, can be mounted so as to allow them to move in the vertical direction using any known device.
