<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

The present invention relates to a process and installations for the continuous casting of ingots into one or more liners connected to the ladle containing the charge of liquid metal.
Installations are already known for the continuous casting of metals and more particularly of steel, in which one or more molds are connected without a break in continuity to the ladle containing the liquid metal, but in installations of this type, the connection of the ladle molds constitute a problem which had not been satisfactorily resolved hitherto.
On the other hand, there are also many continuous casting devices in which the / or molds are not connected to the ladle so as to constitute its extension.
Such a connection is, however, capable of obtaining numerous and very important advantages, provided that it is carried out under good conditions.
The main of these advantages are due to the pressure exerted by the liquid metal contained in the bag on the one which is solidifying in the mold.
This pressure causes swelling of the skin of the forming ingot which has the effect of increasing the contact surface and, therefore, of promoting cooling to a large extent.
This pressure also compensates for the tensile force exerted on the ingot by eliminating the risk of cracks.
In addition, by compressing the ingot it increases its compactness. Thanks to the bonding of the ingot molds to the ladle, the flow of the metal takes place protected from any oxidation and it cannot give rise to any entrainment of gas. In addition, the metal reaches the molds without splashing the walls and their feed is carried out without any turbulence.
This feature also makes it possible to simultaneously feed several molds without having to adjust the flow rate of the metal other than by varying the linear demolding speed.
The great difficulty to overcome in making the connection of the ingot molds to the ladle consisted in preventing the liquid metal - and mainly the steel - from solidifying, at least partially, in the refractory ducts used to establish this connection.
When the steel enters the ingot, it is subjected to vigorous cooling which has the effect of solidifying it almost instantly over a certain thickness. But this instantaneous solidification does not always occur exclusively in the mold. The effect of the refrigeration is sometimes also propagated in the refractory duct preceding the ingot mold, which obviously gives rise to a breakage of the ingot.
Until now, no effective means had been proposed with a view to solving this difficulty. In certain installations comprising one or more ingot molds connected to the ladle without any break in continuity, it has been imagined to electrically heat the refractory conduits bringing the metal into the ingot molds, but this means has proved insufficient mainly when it comes to steel.
The object of the present invention is to remedy this drawback and consists essentially in providing a means by which the refractory duct and in any case the end of this duct adjacent to the mold are energetically and efficiently heated by an agent. gaseous at a temperature such that the metal cannot solidify therein, even in a small thickness.

<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
cooling according to the invention, it being understood that one can provide several similar ingot molds connected to the bag in the same way.
This installation partially represented by FIG. 1 is of the horizontal type, but the invention can just as easily and even more easily be applied to installations of the vertical type or to installations in which the mold or molds are inclined.
Figure 2 shows a sectional elevation of a partial installation of the vertical type.
The installation shown in Figure 1 consists essentially of a pocket 1 containing the metal to be ingot. The bottom of this pocket is provided with flow openings 2 in number equal to that of the molds.
In the installations as shown in Figures 1 and 2, the flow openings are closed during the filling of the ladle by stopper rods of the type usually used in steelworks
In Figure 1, the nozzles which constitute the flow orifices, open into a horizontal refractory duct 3 consisting of one or more sleeves of suitable quality, \! for example, silico-aluminous, which preferably will have the property of not being wetted by liquid leader. Still by way of example, these sleeves could advantageously be molded from the material sold commercially under the name of almulit, which has this property.
This conduit ends with a sleeve 3a of graphite or any other suitable refractory material having a high heat conductivity. It should be noted that graphite also has the property of not being wetted by liquid steel. The whole of the conduit 3-3a thus formed is enclosed in a metal casing 4a-4b, in two parts, designed so that the conduit refractory can be exposed after the ingot operation, even if it is filled with solidified metal.
To achieve this objective, the envelope 4a - 4b (figure 1) could for example be constructed as follows: the part 4a forming the cover of the envelope is fixed to the side wall of the pocket and constitutes one of the two elements 1-envelope, part 4b being the other element. This element 4b envelops only the lateral, posterior and lower faces of the refractory duct. The two elements 4a and 4b could, for example, be provided with ears enabling them to be assembled by means of bolts or keyed studs.
After the ingoting operation and even in the case where the duct3-3a is filled with solidified metal, it would still be possible to lower the element 4b and expose this solidified metal by breaking the refractory duct which contains it.
Thus exposed, the solidified metal could be cut with a torch so as to be able to release the equipment.
This metal casing 4a-4b is shaped in such a way that when the two parts which compose it are assembled, it comprises a bulge serving as a housing for a refractory part 5 which fits on the graphite sleeve 3a in the manner of a Ring. This part 5, made of refractory material, itself comprises a recess 6 in which two diametrically opposed openings are formed and to which correspond two other openings made in the casing 4a - 4b. Through one of these openings, a gas or an ignited gas mixture coming from a burner 7a, supplied by a pipe 7, will reach the recess or combustion chamber 6. The opening 8 is an exhaust orifice.
The gas or gas mixture injected into chamber 6 must
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
be neutral or reducing so as not to oxidize the graphite sleeve 3a.
Experience has shown that steel does not carburize on contact with graphite.
The mold 9 is surrounded by a casing 10 provided with two pipes 11 and 12 serving respectively to supply and discharge the cooling water. At each of its ends, the casing 10 has a chamber 13 and 14 of larger section, which section is divided over part of its length by walls 19 and 20 which may constitute the extensions of the wall of the casing 10. .
The chamber 14 through which the cooling water is discharged is not essential.
The pipes 11 and 12 open into the part of the chambers whose section is reduced by these walls 19 and 20.
To prepare the installation with a view to performing an operation, the procedure is as known:
Introduced into the mold 9, an ingot-buffer 15. The end of this ingot which is in the mold is provided with a primer 16 which will be embedded in the steel which will first reach the mold.
It should be noted that the refractory channel 3-3a could have a section smaller than that of the mold. The other end of this ingot-buffer 15 is engaged between two rolls 17 and 18 rotating in opposite directions and serving to extract the ingot-buffer and the continuous billet driven by it. On leaving the mold, the continuous billet may be subjected to secondary cooling carried out, for example, by means of sprayed water sprayed directly onto it, or by any other suitable means. This billet will be cut into sections of the desired length by a torch, shears or saw.
Before causing the steel to flow in channel 3-3a and in the cooled ingot mold, the burner will have been ignited for a period of time long enough for the graphite sleeve 3a to be brought to a temperature such that any risk solidification of the steel in this sleeve is eliminated.
The temperature which will prevail in the chamber 6 will be higher than that of the liquid metal so that the heat exchange which will take place through the wall of the graphite sleeve, the thermal conductivity of which is very high, takes place in the desired direction.
In other words, the metal contained in the sleeve 3a must benefit from a supply of calories from the combustion chamber 6.
This graphite sleeve will obviously be dimensioned so that it can withstand the maximum ferrostatic pressure to which it will be subjected when it is filled with steel.
This heating device for the sleeve 3a will certainly be very efficient.
On the other hand, the particular construction of the casing surrounding the ingot mold offers the possibility of reducing the efficiency of the refrigeration at the entrance of the ingot mold and thus reducing the risks of solidification of the steel in the sleeve. 3a.
In fact, the quantity of heat absorbed by the cooling water depends on the speed at which it moves on the wall of the mold. It is easy to see that this speed is quite low in the part of the chamber 13 having a large section. This speed only reaches its maximum in the reduced section of the casing 10. In the zone corresponding to the chamber 13, the cooling water is only used, in
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
sum, that to preserve the mold from any deterioration which could cause it the high temperature of the liquid metal.
By limiting in this way: the effect of refrigeration at the entrance of the ingot mold, the risks of solidification of the liquid metal in the refractory sleeve 3a are already greatly reduced, risks which disappear completely, thanks to the energetic and efficient heating. of this sleeve.
FIG. 2 represents., By way of example an application of the invention to an installation of the vertical type.,
This installation, of which FIG. 2 is a sectional elevation, consists in particular of a pocket 1 containing the metal to be ingested, of a: ingot mold 9 surrounded by a casing 10 provided with two pipes 11 and 12 serving respectively to supply and to evacuate the cooling water and a pair of extraction cylinders 17 and 18. All these members are identical to those of the installation of the horizontal type partially shown in Figure 1.
In the vertical installation shown in Figure 2, the supply duct 3 is rectilinear; it could be entirely in graphite because the part of this duct which cannot be directly heated with gas will nevertheless be maintained at a temperature sufficient for the steel not to be able to solidify therein, thanks to the good thermal conductivity of graphite .
This refractory duct 3 will be enclosed in a metal casing consisting of the two separate but identical elements 20 and 21 provided at their upper part with a flange 22 or 23 which is applied to the bottom of the pocket 1 and is attached thereto either by bolts, either by keyed studs or by any other appropriate means. These two elements 20 and 21 are provided with ears making it possible to assemble them also by means of bolts or key studs, for example. Designed in this way ,!) they can be removed after the ingot operation, even in the event that the duct 2 is filled with solid steel which can also be exposed by breaking the refractory duct 3 and the steel solid can be cut with a torch or by any other means in order to free the apparatus.
Each of the elements 20 and 21 comprises a bulge which is to serve as a housing for a shaped brick 25 of refractory material which itself comprises one or more recesses or combustion chambers 25a. These chambers are provided with orifices through which they will be supplied with gas or an ignited gas mixture originating from burners 27a which are themselves supplied by a pipe 27. Exhaust orifices 28, diametrically opposed to the corresponding intake openings., Are also provided in the bricks 25 and in the element 21 which constitutes the half-casing of the duct 3.
To carry out an ingoting operation by means of the installation as described above, one will proceed according to an operating mode identical to that which has been indicated for the installation shown in FIG. 1.
