<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
suivant cette variante lorsqu'on le retire du bain ;
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

method and device for the manufacture of rolling mill rolls or similar parts of hardened cast iron and resulting products.
In the manufacture of rolling mill rolls, quenched, shell cast with a single composition of cast iron, the latter is chosen such that the part of the roll cast against the shell acquires quenching of a certain thickness. In this zone, the cast iron must be white. In the rest of the section of the cylinder table, it must be more and more gray, as one approaches the center.
However, it happens that, for certain cast iron compositions, the white zone extends too far and very often even to the heart of the cylinder table. The latter then no longer has sufficient resistance to mechanical or expansion forces and it breaks prematurely in service. To remedy this drawback, we have already proposed
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
to modify, after the casting of the cylinder and after the solidification of a desired weaver of white zone, the structure of the center of the table, by introducing, by the upper part, a certain quantity of a graphitizing body such as silicon, nickel, aluminum, titanium, etc., which tilberates the carbon to the graphite state instead of leaving it combined, which has the effect of reducing the quenching.
However, this process has proved to be totally ineffective, owing to the impossibility in which it was found to descend to the lower part of the plate, the graphitizing body thus introduced. It still had the big disadvantage of modifying the structure of the upper journal in an unfavorable tightness for the mechanical resistance of this journal.
It has also been proposed to enclose the grapisant body in powder form in a tube placed vertically in the mold of the cylinder before casting. But, under the effect of heat, this tube deformed. In addition, it did not melt in time at all points along its length. As a result, the distribution of the graphitizing body was not regular, from the bottom to the top of the table.
The present invention relates to an improved process for the manufacture of rolling mill rolls or similar parts in hardened cast iron, this process which makes it possible to remedy the aforementioned drawbacks is remarkable in particular in that it consists in introducing the graphitizing substance into the mold. in the form of a certain number of independent charges enclosed in a series of superimposed metal cartridges which are kept in n
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
the mold using a rod or other link.
Cartridges; being independent of each other, melt after a certain time after casting. They thus release their own charge of graphitizing powder.
These dissolves in the nearby liquid metal and therefore acts on the height of each cartridge. An irregularity in] ?: fusion of the different cartridges is then no longer of any importance, The dissolution of the graphitizing body and, consequently, the modification of structure, are equal over the whole length of the table of the cylinder or the like,
According to a characteristic sulfur, after solidification to the desired thickness of the white outer zone of the part to be obliterated, all the cartridges are stirred in the molten metal, with a view to causing and accelerating their own melting.
The subject of the invention is also a device intended for the application of the aforementioned method.
This device is remarkable in particular in that it comprises a series of cartridges intended to contain the charges of graphitizing substance, a rod or other link supporting the superimposed cartridges and a device for guiding the rod or other link to the part. upper mold,
Other characteristics will result from the description which follows,
In the accompanying drawing, given solely by way of example: FIG. 1 is a vertical, longitudinal section of a mold with a device according to the invention; fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of a cartridge; figs. 3 and 4 are analogous views of a variant; fig. 5 shows what remains of the device @
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
according to this variant when it is removed from the bath;
fig. 6 is a horizontal section along the. line 6-6 of fig. 5.
According to the example of execution shown in fig.l, the mold is constituted by a shell 1 and by two frames filled with sand 2 and 3. The casting of the cast iron is carried out at the source through the pipe 4, with orifice flared 5.
According to the invention, the graphitizing material 6 is housed in the annular cavity 7 (fig.2) of metallic cartridges formed of a bottom 8, a cylindrical wall 9 and an axial sleeve 10. The bottom 8 and the sleeve 10 are thicker than the outer wall 9. These cartridges, after having been filled with the graphitizing powder in their annular space, are fitted onto a rod 11 on which they are held for example by a nut 12. The upper rod 11 is for example made of steel and its part / can flow in the guide 12, itself fixed by arms 13 on the upper part of the mold. The rod ends in a ring 14 or other similar member.
The assembly thus assembled is placed in the mold before casting. This is filled as usual, and the time necessary for the solidification of the white area to take place to the desired thickness is waited for.
Then, the melting of the outer walls 9 of the cartridges is caused and accelerated, by imparting to the rod 11 by means of its upper ring 14 and for example by hand, an upward and downward movement whose amplitude can be adjusted for example by two stops 15 and 16 at the same time as a rotational movement,
At the end of the necessary time, all the graphitizing powder 6 is dissolved in the liquid metal, which can be recognized by the tendency for the rod 11 to no longer
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
reassemble, removing from the cylinder (or similar part) by the ring 14 of the rod 11 all the remaining carcass.
In the case of cylinders of a fairly large table diameter, and when it is desired to obtain that the graphitizing body makes its action felt over a greater radius from the center, it is advantageously possible to use the variant shown in fig. 3.
According to this variant, all of the cartridges are placed in an off-center position. The rod 11 is fixed to the end of a crank arm 17 in an adjustable eccentricity position, because the arm 17 has the shape of a fork. This arm 17 is carried by a crank 18.
We understand that by giving a rotational movement using the crank we sweep a larger area than in the first example and the action of the graphitizing substance is exerted up to a certain distance from the axis XX .
Fig. 4 shows a variant of the cartridge, in which the central sleeve 10 is independent of the body of the cartridge and is for example made of steel or other metal capable of withstanding molten iron. Between the cartridges, it is possible to insert, as shown in figs. 3,5,6 discs 19, their thickness and their nature (steel or other similar material) is chosen so that they do not risk melting during the time of the operation. These discs 19 forming silettes are braced by the rings or sleeves 10.
During the operation, the walls of the cartridges alone melt and release the graphitizing body. As a result, after this melting, there remains in the liquid cylinder a carcass formed by the central rod 11, @ the various fins 19 'and the axial sleeves 1a,
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
This carcass shown in fig.5 constitutes a perfect stirrer which, operated as has been said above, helps to promote the regular distribution of the graphitizing body. After the operation, this carcass is removed.
Of course, the invention is in no way limited to the embodiments shown and described which have been chosen only by way of example.
