<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
Il s'ensuit qu'au cours du raffinage on perd nécessairement sous forme d'acides sulfoniques une fraction notable des hydrocarbures aromatiques de valeur;

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
EMI6.1
Fractionnement (Méthode .F .:.0 .B ) ........ 96% sur 0 Indice sulfurique (I/I)................... 0,1 Recherche des homologues du thiophène (essai à l'isatine) Traces.
4 - "Fraction 137-200 "
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>

Coal-based benzols treatment process - Priority of a patent application filed in FRANCE on May 22, 1948.
The present invention relates to an industrial process for treating benzol extracted from gases or tars from the carbonization of hard coal.
We know that crude benzol, for example that which is recovered from the gas of coke ovens or even by distilling the most volatile fractions of coal tar, consists mainly of a mixture of hydrocarbons of the series aromatic such as benzene, toluene, the three xylenes, ethylbenzene, and their higher counterparts which are in great number, among which cumene, pseudocumene, mesitylene, durene, etc ...
There are also many impurities, among which are unsaturated hydrocarbons, such as styrofoam.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
lene and indene, oxygen-containing bodies like coumarone, or sulfur like mercaptans, thiophene or methylthiophene and a host of other unwanted bodies present in much smaller amounts.
Generally, the treatment method which leads to the best recovery of this raw material consists of producing:
1 - Very pure benzene and toluene,
2 - A fraction distilling in an interval of 4 or 5 degrees and which contains a mixture of the three xylenes and ethylbenzene, the boiling points of which are very close,
3 - One or more fractions containing in admixture the many higher homologs mentioned above. These fractions are commonly referred to as "solvent naphtha".
Now, in order to acquire a high commercial value, the products which are extracted from benzol must be perfectly free of the aforementioned impurities, in particular unsaturated hydrocarbons which are transformed little by little spontaneously into gums and colored resins, and com - organic compounds of sulfur which, even in trace amounts, suppose their use in certain chemical manufactur- ings.
The refining method applied in benzol processing plants consists of stirring, in one or more stages, the crude benzol or coarse cuts with a quantity of concentrated sulfuric acid sufficient to bring about the complete polymerization of the unsaturated hydrocarbons. and to dissolve the organic sulfur derivatives by sulfonation. Then the benzol is washed with water and a caustic soda solution to get rid of it.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
residues of sulfuric acid and sulfonic acids formed during refining. Finally, and only, the benzol is fractionated in distillation apparatuses equipped with rectification devices such as plate columns which provide the pure products and the commercial fractions meeting all the requirements of the imposed specifications.
Finally, as the residue of the distillation, the products resinified by the action of sulfuric acid are obtained, which appear as a black and more or less viscous mass which has only a minimal value.
This way of operating has several serious drawbacks:
1 - Among the impurities that it is necessary to remove, there are some, such as thiophene, which are attacked only slowly by sulfuric acid at very high concentration. However, certain aromatic hydrocarbons, especially among the higher homologues of high boiling points, also react with sulfuric acid under the conditions of concentration and temperature which are necessary to achieve to completely destroy the thiophene.
It follows that during the refining one necessarily loses in the form of sulphonic acids a significant fraction of the valuable aromatic hydrocarbons;
2 - Certain unsaturated hydrocarbons such as styrene and its homologues condense, in the presence of concentrated sulfuric acid, with certain aromatic hydrocarbons such as xylenes, forming homologues

<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
These products, which are oily, have boiling points above 300. They accumulate in the distillation residues and are the cause of a loss of aromatic hydrocarbons which can be very significant.
3 - The temperature rise which accompanies the action of sulfuric acid on crude benzols favors side reactions of sulfonation and increases losses.
4 - Substances capable of undergoing polymerization, such as indene and coumarone, are transformed into a black and viscous oil which has little value.
The Applicant Company has found that it was possible to avoid these drawbacks by subjecting the crude benzol, prior to any chemical treatment, to very close fractionation by rectification, resulting in fractions whose distillation characteristics are those required of pure products, then applying to each fraction a particular chemical treatment appropriate to its specific nature.
One of the essential advantages of the new process is that it provides an increased yield of very high purity aromatic hydrocarbons with much shorter refining times.
Another important advantage is that, from one or more suitable fractions, it is possible to produce a hard, poorly fusible, low-color resin of high commercial value.
The following examples describe embodiments of the invention, but these are not limited to the treatment of the benzol alone involved, nor to the exclusive use of the apparatus or reagents mentioned therein.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
EXAMPLE I - A crude benzol extracted from a coking plant gas was subjected to continuous fractionation at atmospheric pressure or by means of tray columns and the following fractions were collected: 1 - Heads distilling from 20 to 80 2 - Crude benzene distilling over 0 6 3 - Crude toluene distilling over 0 95.
The residue was then continuously distilled under vacuum and provided a fourth fraction: 4 - Crude xylenes and higher homologs, distilling from
137 to 2000 approximately.
There remained in the boiler a scanty final residue, resulting from entrainment in the benzol of the washing oil which had been used to debenzol the gas and also containing a little naphthalene.
The distillations can moreover be carried out under increased or reduced pressures to facilitate, for example, the condensation of very light products or to allow certain heat recoveries.
Then, each fraction was subjected to the following treatments:
1 - "Heads"
This fraction, which is generally very small, can either be treated in order to separate carbon disulfide, cyelopentadiene, a light gasoline and a resin, or be transformed into motor benzol.
2 - "Raw benzene"
This fraction was stirred for 15 minutes with 2.5% by volume 99.5% sulfuric acid. After standing and separating the acid slurry, it was subjected to the identical treatment again, then was. washed with water and with sodium hydroxide solution and finally redistilled without rectification. Very pure commercial benzene was thus obtained meeting the most severe specifications:
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
Fractionation (Method A.F.N.O.R., standard B 6-II) ....................... 96% on 0 3
15 Density ................................ 0.8840
15 Solidification point ................... 5 4 Sulfuric diacid number (1/4 =) ........... 0 Search for thiophene ( isatin test) none.
3 - crude ttoluene "
The toluene fraction was stirred for 15 minutes with 2% by volume diacid. After standing and separation of the acid slurry, it was washed with water then with sodium hydroxide solution, and finally redistilled without rectification. Very pure tduene was obtained, the characteristics of which were as follows:
EMI6.1
Fractionation (Method .F.:. 0 .B) ........ 96% on 0 Sulfuric index (I / I) ................... 0.1 Search for thiophene homologues (isatin test) Traces.
4 - "Fraction 137-200"
This fraction, which contains the main unstable constituents preexisting in the initial benzol, such as styrene, indene and coumarone, must be treated with a view to transforming them into a commercial resin. The copolymerization process described in the patent application of the same day in the name of the Applicant and entitled “Process for the preparation of artificial resins” can be applied to it advantageously, but it can also be treated by any other method. making it possible to simultaneously polymerize the resinable elements it contains.
In the case where the process of the aforementioned patent application is applied, the resin obtained is constituted by copolymers of styrene, indene and coumarone. Its characteristics, which make it a com-
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
of high value, are the following: - Softening point (Kraemer & Sarnow method) ............... 115-120 - Coloration: - Colorless in thin layer - Weak colored in pale yellow under great thickness.
- Molecular weight (Staudinger method) .................. 3,000 to 3,500
In the application example which has just been described, the yield of benzene + toluene + xylenes + solvent naphtha is approximately 5% higher than it was in the old process. In addition, about 2% of a clear, slightly tinted, hard resin of great commercial value is obtained. The commercially worthless distillation residue is reduced by about 3% and the overall losses by about 2%.
EXAMPLE 2.- A very interesting variant of the method is as follows: The crude benzol is subjected to a preliminary fractionation in: 1 - Heads distilling between 20 and 80 2 Crude benzene distilling on 0 6, 3 - Crude toluene distilling on 0 9 , 4 - Crude xylenes distilling between 137 and 144, 5 - Higher homologs distilling between 144 and 200 approximately.
Then the “Heads”, “Crude Benzene” and “Crude Toluene” fractions are treated as in Example I. From the “Crude Xylenes” fraction, most of the styrene is removed by azeotropy, the remainder being treated as indicated. in the previous example, either alone or as a mixture with fraction 5.
The present invention is not limited to the treatment of benzols formed in high temperature carbonization as practiced, for example, in
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
coking plants or gas works. It also applies to the case of gasolines obtained from the carbonization of coal at low temperature. These gasolines, whose nature is more complex than that of benzols, are not generally treated to extract pure hydrocarbons therefrom, but are reserved for the manufacture of solvents or motor fuels.
In the application of the process to these gasolines, the number of fractions to be made will depend on the number and the nature of the main constituents of the gasoline; the distillation intervals of these fractions will depend on the nature of the impurities to be removed; the mode of refining the fractions will be as follows:
1 - Fractions before 1300
The quantities and concentrations of acid to be employed will be reduced to the minimum compatible with the qualities required of the commercial products to be obtained.
2 - Fractions after 1300
It will be of particular interest to practice the copolymerization according to the process of the aforementioned patent application.
