<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

"A method of making ribbons composed of a metal wire wrapped in a strip of paper."
The present invention relates to a process for the manufacture of ribbons composed of a metal wire wrapped in a paper web, characterized by a coil of metal wire and a roll of paper mounted separately on two parallel axes, one. thread starting from the spool of thread and a strip of paper starting from the roll of paper, the thread and the strip of paper being guided in such a way that they meet at a certain point, this thread and this strip being driven by a device common training downstream of this point and forming a single ribbon from said point, the wire being, between the coil and the meeting point,
first corrugated and then flattened by rolling and provided with transverse grooves, while the paper web is first folded longitudinally between the roll and the meeting point and then continuously coated with gum

wet in the fold, after which the corrugated and flattened wire by rolling is introduced beyond the meeting point in the fold of the paper web and covered by the wings of this strip, the union of the two elements being finally effected by compression, with a view to obtaining a single ribbon.
The tape obtained by the process according to the invention is shown in the accompanying drawing by way of example, which also and schematically shows the various stages of manufacture.

In figs. I to 3 of the drawing, a denotes a ribbon of known type, composed of a flattened and corrugated metal wire b, and a strip of paper enveloping or covering the flattened and transversely grooved wire, such that the longitudinal shape of the yarn clearly appears on at least one side of the paper envelope.
The metallic wire to be wrapped initially has a circular cross section (fig. 3), and it is only rolled flat and transversely grooved during the implementation of the process (figs. 2 and 5). The initial strip of paper, that is to say as it unwinds from the roll, is flat (fig. 6), and it is not folded in the shape of a gutter, that is to say in a U. , that during the implementation of the method (figs. 7 and 8). In fig. 9 of the drawing, Rd designates a coil of metal wire, the axis of which is indicated at x, and which contains wire d (fig. 4) of circular section. Rp designates a roll of paper, the axis of which is indicated at y. The x and y axes are parallel.
A pull in the direction of the arrow P produces the unwinding of the metal wire d of the coil Rd, and a pull in the direction of the arrow P 'produces the unwinding of the paper web p of the roll Rp. At A, the metal wire is corrugated as shown in fig. 2.
In B, the corrugated wire, but still of circular section, is flattened and grooved transversely by rolling, as shown in fig. 5.
At C, the initially flat paper strip p receives the shape of a longitudinal gutter i, as shown in fig.8. At D, the interior surfaces of this gutter i are coated with wet rubber to allow them to adhere.
At E, the corrugated and flattened metal wire b is introduced into the paper / gutter. It is at this point that the strip of paper and the metal wire come together and form a single ribbon. immediately after introduction
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
to the corrugated wire in the paper gutter, the two freshly gummed wings of the gutter are folded inwards so that they almost overlap and also envelop the flattened metal wire, fixing it by gluing.
F, G denote two drive rollers, and H, J. two rubber rollers, exerting sufficient pressure on the drive rollers. It is also at this point that the thread d is unwound from the spool Rd, and the strip of paper p from the roll of paper Rp.
The finished tape, which arrives at K, has (fig. 3) a flat face and a non-flat face, on which the relief of the wrapped wavy wire appears. This conformance is obtained by the fact that the drive rollers F and G have a hard and smooth peripheral surface, while the pressure rollers H and J, which finally fold the two gummed wings of the rubber against each other. paper tape, are made of rubber so flexible that it follows the irregularities of the tape on the upper face. At the same time, this arrangement ensures sufficient adhesion, preventing any slippage of the tape on the drive rollers F and G. The smooth side can also receive prints, for example.
At K, the tape is cut into sections of the same length, which can be determined at will. The sectioning is carried out, for example, using a rotary circular knife. Since the tape is driven by the rollers F, G at high speed, the different sections are then projected in uninterrupted succession and at the same time fall on a sloping wall L on which they rebound to fall into a M trough extending the wall and may also be in the form of an open gutter. The sections fall from

in such a way that they are superimposed and assembled longitudinally, and that they can be united in bundles or bundles.
The sections of tape obtained by this process are immediately usable, and can be used for closing cones or paper bags, as artificial rattan for ligatures, as a means of reinforcing hat ribbons, etc.
