Method for the manufacture of a cigarette mouthpiece, part thus obtained, and apparatus for the implementation of this method The present invention relates to a process for the manufacture of a cigarette mouthpiece, the part thus obtained and an apparatus for carrying out said method.
The method which is the subject of the invention is characterized in that longitudinal corrugations are formed in a tape of a flexible material, in particular of paper, in that the corrugated tape thus obtained is made to stick together by the ridges of its corrugations, to a flat support strip, for example a paper strip, in that the whole is brought in the form of a tube of round cross section, the support strip being inside the tube so that the corrugations extend substantially radially relative to the mouthpiece.
The mouthpiece thus manufactured is characterized in that it comprises a central part having radial undulations, bonded, by the ridges of its corrugations, to a circular support strip enveloping said central part.
The support band thus encloses and supports the corrugated central portion which forms the core or filling of the mouthpiece. The latter may also include an outer envelope formed from a strip of paper or another material.
The apparatus which is the subject of the invention for the implementation of this method is characterized in that it comprises two plates with mutually engaging grooves between which a tape can pass, the grooves of the plates extending into the general direction of tape movement but converging and becoming deeper and deeper from the input side to the output side of the trays, two rollers having mutually engaging circumferential grooves between which the tape then passes, means arranged so as to applying an adhesive backing strip to said longitudinally corrugated tape,
and means arranged so as to form the tape and the adherent tape into a tube of round section, the support tape enclosing the corrugated tape.
The appended drawing shows, by way of example, an embodiment of the apparatus for the manufacture of the mouthpiece which is the subject of the invention.
Figs. 1 and 2 together show a perspective view of this embodiment, FIG. 2 being placed to the left of FIG. 1.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view, on a larger scale, of a member shown in FIGS. 1 and 2. FIG. 4 is a section, on a larger scale, of other members shown in FIGS. 1 and 2, and fig. 5 to 10 are respectively sections, on a larger scale, along V-V to X-X of FIG. 2 showing a cigarette mouthpiece in various stages of its manufacture.
A strip of paper 1 (fig. 1) is brought from a reel 2 around a roller 3, on a guide roller 4 and between two horizontal grooved plates 5, 6. The lower plate 5 is mounted on a frame 7 and the upper roller 6 is hinged to the plate 5 along the rear edge 8 of the latter (Fig. 3). The plates 5, 6 have grooves 9 and 10 which mutually engage and which extend in the general direction of movement of the tape 1 and converge, becoming deeper and deeper from the rear entry edge to the leading edge of output of the trays.
On the exit edge, the shape of the grooves is the desired final shape for the corrugations imparted to the tape 1 (corrugations 11 in Fig. 5). Seen from the exit edge, the grooves 9, 10 diverge and become shallower in the direction of the entry edge where they disappear almost over the entire width of the tape 1. The male and female formations of the two plates fit tightly, for example example with a clearance of 0.125 mm.
The grooves 9, 10 and the intermediate teeth have at the exit a V-shape with an apex angle of approximately 450. The pitch of the grooves can be 3.43 mm and their depth 3.30 mm. The grooves 9 of the lower plate 5 are advantageously formed by eight protruding teeth on the plate, while the eight grooves 10 are hollowed out in the upper plate 6. The angle of convergence between the center lines of the adjacent teeth of a shelf can be about 1 1/2.
Apart from the undulations which are imparted to it, the tape 1 is not wrinkled, crumpled or deformed as it passes between the plates 5 and 6. It is obliged to follow the training imposed by the rhythms 9, 10 of the plates without taking however a permanent form.
When the corrugated tape 1 leaves the trays 5, 6, it passes between rollers 12, 13 constituting the first pair 14 of three pairs 14, 15, 16 of superimposed rollers, all driven so as to rotate at the same speed. The rollers 12, 13 of the pair 14, which serve to complete and maintain the shape of the corrugated tape 1, both have grooves 17, 18 (fig. 4) of a cross section similar to that of the grooves 9, 10 in the exit edge of the trays 5, 6 respectively, with a set 19 sem blable.
The rollers of the pair 15 are feed rollers. The rolls of the pair 16 are intended to apply to the underside of the corrugated tape 1 a support strip 20 which unwinds from a reel 21 and which is guided around a roll 22 and the lower roll of the pair 16 , so that it advances to the left looking at fig. 1 with corrugated tape 1.
The strip 20 is provided with a heat and / or pressure sensitive adhesive coating on the face which comes to rest against the face of the corrugated tape 1 when the strip and the tape pass together between the rolls of the pair 16. If the adhesive is thermosensitive, the lower roll of the pair 16 can be heated, for example by an electric element embedded in this roll. From the pair 16 of rollers, the superimposed tape and strip pass between movable knives 23 of known type which cut them on their two edges 24 (FIG. 5). Then the tape and the web pass between two drive rollers of a pair 25.
Only the top roll of the pairs 15, 16 and 25 of rollers is grooved, as is roll 13. It can be seen from fig. 4 that the rollers comprise sleeves 26, of nylon, or of another plastic material, or of fiber, or of paper, bonded by a resin, fixed to metal hubs 27. The tape 1 or the whole of the tape 1 and of the strip 20 can be supported by bridges between the pairs of successive elements 14, 15, 16, 23 and 25. Between the pairs 14, 15 and 16, these bridges can be formed by ribs or teeth on which the corrugations are guided. Such a bridge 14 'is visible in FIG. 1.
From the driving rollers of the pair 25, the tape 1 and the tape 20 superimposed pass, after a twist putting them in a vertical plane (fig. 5), in a funnel 28 of a known forming device which gives them. gives a substantially circular section, the support strip 20 serving to retain the corrugations of the tape 1. On leaving the funnel 28, the tape and the tape have substantially the tubular section shown in FIG. 6 still showing a clearance 29, the corrugations 11 having been closed to give the star formation shown, with arms having substantially parallel sides extending from the center towards the strip 20.
From this point, the tubular body is supported and transported by the upper run of a conveyor belt 30 similar to the belt of a cigarette-making machine, and driven and guided in the same manner as this belt. . When the tubular body exits the funnel 28, it is placed on a strip of paper 31 intended to form an outer envelope and which is unwound from a spool 32 and passes, on the belt 30, around a roll 33 around from which the belt 30 is brought for this purpose. The tape 31 carries a heat-sensitive adhesive on its face which comes into contact with the tape 20.
The tubular body and the tape 31, the latter partially embraced by the belt 30, then pass through a folding device 34 which first folds the margins of the tape 31 as shown in FIG. 7 and at the same time brings the tubular body to a more truly circular cross section and thus bends one of said margins as shown in fig. 8. The other margin of the tape 31 is folded back by another folding device 35 to give the tubular body the shape shown in FIG. 9. It can be seen that there is a small gap 36 between the edges of the tape 31.
In other words, the widths of the strip 20 and of the strip 31 are such that the tubular body, in the state shown in FIG. 9, is oversized with respect to the tape 31 forming the envelope. The device 35 is followed by a heating iron 37 which softens the heat-sensitive adhesive on the tape 31 and fixes the latter to the tape 20 on either side of the space 36 (Fig. 9).
The devices 34, 35 and 37 may be similar to the devices of a cigarette making machine which perform the same functions to form the stalk of the cigarette, namely the tab box, the short and long folding machines and the. heating body for joining with its iron. The rod having the straight section shown in FIG. 9 is fed into an elongated die 38 comprising an electric resistance heating body.
The heat-sensitive adhesive is made plastic and the rod is formed by the die to take a truly circular cross section (Fig. 10) which is exactly the dimension of the precisely sized die. The rod is then consolidated in its final state by passing through a cold die 39, of the same diameter as the heated die 38, which is cooled between 0 and -100 ° C. to fix the adhesion. In addition, a jet of air can be sent through a device 39 'to promote cooling. We see in fig. 10 that the spaces 29 and 36 are closed, the edges of the tape 31 being welded edge to edge at 40.
The rod 41 emerging from a guide 42 is released from the belt 30 when the latter moves downwards around a roller 43, and enters a guide 44 leading to a known and not shown cutting device which divides the rod. in ends of single or multiple lengths which are received in a manifold from which they can be taken up for attachment to cigarettes in the known manner. The temperature of the matrix 38 is preferably controlled by thermostat so as to maintain a temperature between 250 and 300o C.
Ribbon 1 can be offset cartridge paper, caliber 0.1 mm, width 63.5 mm. The strip 20 may be of label paper, gauge 0.075 mm, width 28.6 mm, covered with a thermoplastic adhesive based on a synthetic resinous composition, for example a polyethylene resin. The tape 31 may be of paper, 0.15 mm gauge and 24.5 mm wide, and bears a double coating of a thermoplastic adhesive similar to the adhesive applied to the tape 20 and compatible with the latter. The tape 1 and the tape 20 can be cut to a width of 24.00 mm. The space 36 may be approximately 11mm wide.
The bores of the two dies may have a circumference of 24.8 mm and the final shank, when cold, may have a circumference slightly less than that of the bore of the dies.
It is obvious that the corrugations can have a different shape from those shown in FIG. 5 and have, for example, parallel flanks and semi-circular or otherwise rounded ridges on the remote side of the strip 20 or on both sides. The corrugations can also be square. It is possible to envisage heating the plates 5 and 6. The strip 20, instead of being previously covered with adhesive, can receive a hot-melt adhesive before being brought into contact with the strip 1, by means of the nozzle of a known sizing device.
The tapes 1 and 31 and the strip 20 can be made of a foil material other than paper, for example aluminum foil. Furthermore, the tape 1 can be made of papers of various types, for example glassine paper, felt paper or metallized paper covered with a thin metal film, for example aluminum. The tape 20 can be applied so as to form a helical support.
