<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

Device comprising a tubular electric lamp and a lighting apparatus; 1 two lamp holders.
The invention relates to a device comprising a tubular electric lamp and a lighting apparatus provided with two lamp holders.
It provides a tubular lamp of compact shape which is particularly easy to display.
According to the invention, the lamp takes the form of a spiral or double helix or with two entries, the ends of which are located at diametrically opposed points of the spiral and include contact members which constitute the extensions of the ends of the spiral while that the lamp holders are arranged in such a way that it suffices to turn the lamp slightly around its axis to introduce it into its holders.

The description of the appended drawing, given by way of nonlimiting example, will make it clear how the invention can be implemented, the particularities which emerge both from the text and from the drawing, of course, forming part of the invention.
The fiE. 1 shows an embodiment of the lamp, FIG. 2 is a section through one of the ends of the lamp and of the corresponding support in FIG. 3 is an elevational view of the lamp holder, Fig. 4 is a part of the lighting apparatus provided with two lamp holders, while FIG. 5 shows another embodiment of the lamp.
The lamp shown in fig. 1 consists of a long glass tube 1, wound in the form of a spiral or double helix or with two entries, the central part 2 of which connects the two spiral branches 3 and 4 which are wound in the same direction. The tube thus formed ends in lamp supports at diametrically opposed points on the wall.
By way of example, the lamp shown in Figs. 1 and 2 is a fluorescent discharge tube, the shell of which is internally covered with a layer of fluorescent powder 6. The tube contains a gas such as argon, neon, krypton, etc. and a small quantity of mercury 7 which, under operating conditions, provides mercury vapor at the pressure of about 10. The discharge in the mercury generates ultra-violet rays which layer 6 converts into rays at longer wavelength .
Although in principle any electrodes can be used, the drawing shows activated incandescent electrodes consisting of a spiral film 8, preferably of tungsten coated with oxidizer; of alkaline earth metals, oxides which have the property of emitting electrons. At each end of the lamp, such an electrode is attached to supply wires 9, 9 which are sealed in a usual pinch 10. Outside the chamber
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
discharge, the supply wires are stranded and are connected together to a contact member 11 which axi.lement protrudes an insulating cover 12 of the lamp base.
If necessary, each of the lamp bases 5 can have two contact pinsa and in this case the wires 9 are connected separately to the corresponding pins.
In the case shown, the contact members 11 have the shape of a mushroom, the diameter of the part 13 is greater than that of the rest. These members 11 are brought into contact with the contact walls 14 of the lamp holders 15.
It should be noted that in fig. 2, the lamp occupies an inverted position with respect to that which it has on the. fig. 1 so that it hangs in the brackets 15.
Each of the supports 15 comprises a housing 16 made of irolante material in which an oval hollow 17. The axis of this hollow is approximately perpendicular to the front part 18 of the support; the deviation of the right angle corresponds to the pitch of the propeller. The contact wall 14 is carried in the aforementioned hollow by a yoke 19, having the shape of a U, which is fixed to a disc 20, preferably of insulating material and of approximately the same shape and size as the sec- transverse tion of the hollow 17. @e disc 20 is fixed to the rear wall 21 of the housing 16. The wall 14 is riveted to projections 22 of the caliper.
The lamp holder comprises a possibly a (- contact lamp 23, folded in the shape of a U, one of the arms of which is fixed to the bracket while the other is arranged behind an opening, in the form of keyhole, formed in the contact wall 14. The lower part of this opening 24 is narrowed towards the rear so as to ensure good contact with the conical neck 25 of the contact member 11. The sup - lamp port can be mounted using a metal plate 26, bent in the shape of an L, which is fixed with a screw 27 in the bracket 19 and which passes through an opening 28 communicating with the hollow 17.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
As shown in fig. 4 the spacing of the lamp supports 15 corresponds to the distance from axis to axis of the contact members 11, mounted on a mounting plate or on a part 29 of the frame, the front parts 18 of the supports being rotated 'in opposite directions.
The lamp can be mounted in the lamp holders by placing the lamp bases in front of the openings of the holders and by slightly turning the lamp around the axis of the spiral so that the contact members 11 enter the enlarged upper part of the lamp. the keyhole-shaped opening in the contact wall and engage the contact springsa the lamp is then pulled slightly downwards so that the lower part of the neck of the contact members engages in the narrowed lower part of the openings in the form of a keyhole, which fixes the lamp.
The lamp 1 'shown in FIG. 5 also affects the shape of a double spiral but the turns are here on a conical surface whereas, in the lamp shown in fig. 1, they lie on a cylindrical surface.
It goes without saying that, by virtue of their special shape, the lamps according to the invention constitute very compact light sources, the luminous efficiency of which is equal to that of long straight fluorescent lamps. In a concrete case, the diameter of the tube was about 25 mm and its length about 2.50 m while the diameter of the spiral was about 30 cm.
