<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

Improvements to remote control mechanisms for reversible parts.
This invention relates to remote control mechanisms of the hydraulic type, for reversible components, such as reversing devices of a marine machine and it aims to create an improved and simplified mechanism which initiates. automatically, does not have valves liable to stall, can operate at low pressure, of the order of 15 kgs. or less per cm2, so that it can have a long life, is relatively free of leaks, and does not include automatic reversing devices to reverse the movement of the piston which actuates the reversible part (s).
The remote control mechanism according to the invention comprises two pumps of the valveless gear type, connected by pipes to the ends of a cylinder, in which
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
there is a piston by means of which the reversible part is actuated, and to an oil reservoir, and a handle or a hand wheel which simultaneously turns the two pumps in opposite directions so that when the fluid is admitted at one end of the cylinder, it is withdrawn at the other end.
Both gear type pumps have the same displacement if the piston rod passes through both ends of the cylinder or have unequal displacements if the piston rod passes through only one end of the cylinder. Unequal displacement of the pumps can be obtained by giving them different dimensions or speeds of rotation.
In the accompanying drawings:
Fig. 1 is a general view of the remote control mechanism of the reversing apparatus of a marine machine, constructed and arranged in accordance with a suitable embodiment of this invention.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the gear type pumps together with the oil reservoir and the position indicator shown in FIG. 1.
A toothed wheel a is mounted on a shaft b provided with a handle or a handwheel 0 and meshes with two gears d, e making up each of the two gear type pumps, so that they these only include three wheels only. an oil reservoir f supplies the two pumps and an indicator g which is connected by a traction-pressure connection h to the handle i which operates the reversal of the gearbox mechanism ±.
The two pumps are connected by the pipes k and m to the ends of the cylinder n enclosing a piston coupled by the piston rod ± to the tab p of the control lever. A roller g at the end of the tab p is pushed back by a lever r subjected to the action of a spring s and articulated at t. The roller moves on

the cam surfaces u when the piston rod o brings the control tab to the front position or to the rear position and the cavity there maintains the tab in the neutral position.
The cam surfaces are established in such a way that the roller o is automatically brought back into the cavity v if the control tab p and the roller it carries were not brought back completely into the neutral position by the rod o.
Instead of employing two gear type pumps having only three toothed wheels, it is possible to use two separate gear pumps, each comprising two toothed wheels actuated in opposite directions by the single hand wheel c.
By applying the invention to the control, for example, of the forward and reverse couplings of the overturning mechanism of a marine machine of 150 B.H.P. the forward clutch or the reverse clutch can be brought into the desired position starting from the neutral point, in approximately 2 seconds, without developing a pressure greater than 15 kgs. per cm2 which ensures easy operation.
The control mechanism according to the invention is easy to install and its operation is exceptionally easy.
