- la figure 1 est une conpeeaxiale du mécanisme dans lequel l'ar- bre moteur est accouplé à la couronne dentée et l'arbre commandé est accou- plé à l'armature des satellites; - la figure 2 est une vue en élévation de ce mécanisme vu de la partie de droite de la figure 1, en supposant enlevée la plaque qui enferme les satellites et leurs chambres d'aspiration ou de refoulement; - la figure 3 est une coupe suivant la ligne III-III de la figu- re 1; - la figure 4 est une coupe axiale d'un autre mécanisme dans le- quel l'arbre moteur est réuni à l'armature des satellites et l'arbre comman- dé, représenté dans ce cas par une poulie de transmission, est réuni à la couronne dentée; - la figure 5 est une coupe axiale d'une autre forme de construc- tion du mécanisme;

Dans la forme d'exécution représentée sur les figures 1 à 3, le mécanisme est particulièrement approprié pour être appliqué à une automobile ou autre véhicule similaire, par accouplement direct avec le volant 1 du mo- teuro Ce volant, qui dans ce cas représente l'arbre moteur, est réuni inva- riablement à la boîte extérieure 2 du mécanisme et à la couronne 3 dentée in- térieurement;
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

PROGRESSIVE.SPEED CHANGE MECHANISM.
The present invention relates to a hydraulic mechanism for progressive speed change. which can also play the role of clutch, and which allows, thanks to a simple movement of a lever or control member ;, to vary the speed of the controlled shaft from zero to the speed of the motor shaft This mechanism is therefore very useful for controlling machines which must operate at different speeds or which must be started in a progressive manner; in particular, it has a large field of application in automobiles or other similar vehicles.
This mechanism comprises an internally toothed crown, which is coupled to one of the two shafts, motor or controlled and a central means or frame joined to the other shaft which doors mounted on it, one or more planet gears constantly meshing with the toothed crown each of these pinions form, together with the toothed ring gear, a gear pump which circulates the liquid, and the frame carrying the pinions forms for each pinion a suction chamber and a discharge chamber for the liquid driven by the movement ring gear and pinion.
These suction and delivery chambers are in communication with each other by means of a pipe which closes the liquid circuit and in which is interposed a valve or throttle member, which makes it possible to open more or less the passage of the liquid. or to close it completely, so that by varying the position or the opening of this throttle member, the speed of the controlled shaft is varied.
In an improved form of construction of this mechanism, there are provided on the frame carrying the planet wheels, which is fixed to the driven shaft, and on a member integral with the toothed ring attached to the drive shaft, series of vanes in correspondence with each other, like those of turbines, which, when the motor shaft turns,
contribute to the transmission of power from this motor shaft to the controlled shaft
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
In the accompanying drawings are shown several examples of execution of the mechanism object of the present invention.
In these drawings:.
FIG. 1 is an axial view of the mechanism in which the motor shaft is coupled to the ring gear and the driven shaft is coupled to the armature of the planet wheels; - Figure 2 is an elevational view of this mechanism seen from the right part of Figure 1, assuming removed the plate which encloses the satellites and their suction or delivery chambers; FIG. 3 is a section taken along line III-III of FIG. 1; - Figure 4 is an axial section of another mechanism in which the motor shaft is joined to the armature of the planet wheels and the driven shaft, represented in this case by a transmission pulley, is joined to the toothed crown; FIG. 5 is an axial section of another form of construction of the mechanism;
- Figure 6 is a cross section along the line VI-VI of Figure 5, and - Figure 7 is a cross section along the line VII-VII of Figure 5, assuming removed the cover or right part of the box enclosing the toothed crown
In the embodiment shown in Figures 1 to 3, the mechanism is particularly suitable to be applied to an automobile or other similar vehicle, by direct coupling with the steering wheel 1 of the engine This steering wheel, which in this case represents the the motor shaft, is invariably joined to the outer box 2 of the mechanism and to the ring 3 toothed internally;
the controlled shaft 4 is supported on ball bearings 5, 6 mounted respectively on the flywheel 1 and the gearbox 2.
This controlled shaft 4 carries., Fixed invariably, for example by means of screws 7, a part 8 forming a hub adapted to the shaft 4 and closed by a plate 9 fixed to the part 8 by means of screws 10, the two parts 8,
9 thus forming an armature which rotates at the same time as the driven shaft 4 and encloses the toothed ring 3 on either side; this frame carries the shafts 11 of a series of planet gears 12, turning idly on said shafts and constantly meshing with the inner ring gear 3.
The part 8 of the frame fills the spaces remaining between the gables 12, leaving only on either side of each gable .. chambers 13, 14, which remain closed by the part 8 and the plate 9. Thanks to this device., each of the pinions 12, together with the crown 3, forms a gear pump which, if it is assumed that the crown and the pinions rotate in the direction indicated by the arrow in Figure 2, delivers the liquid from the suction chamber 13 up to the discharge chamber
14.
In addition, part 8 has for each of these pumps an enlargement towards the left part of FIG. 1, forming a pipe 23, 24, 25, 26, which closes the circuit for circulating the liquid from the chamber. delivery bre 14 to the suction chamber 13. Between the two parts 25, 26 of this pipe is interposed a throttle member, which can close or open more or less the passage of liquid. This throttle member is shown in the drawings in the form of a valve 27, but it could equally well be any other throttle member which enables the passage of the liquid to be opened or closed and which can be operated from the outside of the mechanism ...
As will be understood, once the circuit of each pump has been filled with the corresponding quantity of oil or other liquid, if the valve
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
27 is open, when the ring gear 3 turns, the liquid will flow freely from the suction chamber to the discharge chamber, and from the latter back to the suction chamber, while the pignoss 12 will turn crazy and will not transmit no movement from crown 3 to frame 8, 9 and to the controlled shaft 4.
On the other hand, if the valve 27 is closed, the liquid, delivered by the pump to the discharge chamber 14, will not be able to pass to the suction chamber 13 and consequently the pinion 12 will not be able to turn relative to the ring gear. toothed; the mechanism will then remain blocked, the frame 8, 9 and the controlled shaft 4 rotating integrally with the toothed ring 3.
If the valve 27 is only partially open, so that it does not allow all of the liquid delivered by the pump to pass, there will be a slip between the crown 3 and the frame 8, 9 and the shaft 4 will rotate at a slower speed than that of crown 3 depending on the greater or lesser opening of the valve.
To actuate the valve or throttle member 27, any mechanism may be provided which can be controlled from outside the transmission mechanism. In Figures 1 to 3, there is shown for each valve 27 a lever 15 pivoting around the pin 16 and all these levers are actuated simultaneously by a cone 17 sliding on the shaft 4 and rotating with said shaft. This cone is actuated at the hub of a rotating plate 18 idle on the shaft 4 and driven by one or more rods 19, which protrude outside the box 2 of the mechanism.
In FIG. 4, another embodiment has been shown, in which the position of the driving and controlled shafts is inverted, the mechanism operating for the rest in the manner already described; In this embodiment, the motor shaft is the central shaft 30 which carries, fixed to it, the frame 8, 9 and the controlled shaft is formed by the box
31 of the mechanism which takes the form of a transmission pulley and is invariably connected to the crown 3. In order to actuate the levers 15 of the valves 27, a cone 32 is provided, sliding on the shaft 30, which extends in forming a sleeve 33 protruding outside the box
31 and movable by means of a lever 34 or any other suitable device.
To ensure that the liquid circuits of all the pumps will always remain full, the mechanism box can be filled with oil. and disposing in the chamber 23 or in the chamber 24 in the direction of rotation, an opening located such that by virtue of the rotational movement even the external oil tends to enter the chamber.
In FIGS. 5 to 7, another form of construction of this mechanism has been shown, in which the transmission of power from the motor shaft to the driven shaft is improved by means of a series of paddles respectively integral with the The motor shaft and the driven shaft, which vanes working like a turbine contribute to the transmission of power.
In this form of construction, the motor shaft 1 carries, invariably fixed on it, a plate 20 supporting the toothed ring 3. On the edge of this toothed ring is fitted a cover 21 which, together with the toothed ring and the plate 20., forms a closed box rotating with the motor shaft 1 and inside which can rotate the controlled shaft 4 supported by appropriate bearings. Within the box 3, 20, 21 is fixed invariably on the controlled axis 4 a frame formed by the two plates 8, 9 which carry the axes 11 of the planet gears 12. The entire mechanism is enclosed in the envelope or
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
outer box 2, which has been omitted in Figures 6 and 7 to simplify the drawing.
As in Figures 1 to 3, the planet gears 12 together with the ring gear 3 form gear pumps, which, assuming the mechanism rotates in the direction of the arrow (Figure 6), each form a suction chamber 13 and a discharge chamber 14.
The frame 8, 9 forms between each pair of pumps conduits 28 which put the delivery chamber of one pump in communication with the suction chamber of the neighboring pump. In these pipes 28 are provided throttling members which, in this case, consist of butterflies 29 which can all be actuated from outside the mechanism.
The plate 9 of the frame 8, 9 carries on its outer face a ring of pallets 35. On the inner part of the cover 21 is another ring of pallets 36. These pallets are oriented in the same way as the pallets. turbines, so that when the cover 21 rotates together with the motor shaft, the centrifugal force acts on the liquid contained in the box and produces a certain pressure, which, thanks to the vanes 36, is directed so as to act on the vanes 35 of the frame 8, 9, thereby contributing to transmitting to this frame 8, 9 and therefore to the controlled shaft 4, the rotational movement of the motor shaft.
On the vane ring 35 are apertures 37 at suitable intervals which communicate with the suction chambers 13 of the gear pumps, so that the pressure produced by the vanes 36 and 35 is also transmitted to the chambers. suction 13 and acts on the pinions of the gear pumps by making these pumps work as motors and thus contributing to the transmission of power from the motor shaft to the driven shaft. In this way, the efficiency of the mechanism as a speed change is considerably improved in all cases. the driven shaft rotates at a slower speed than the motor shaft.
The butterflies or throttle members 29 are all actuated simultaneously by means of a suitable mechanism controlled by an external control. In this form of construction, this mechanism is constituted by a ballast 38 fixed on a shaft 39 which is controlled from the outside by any suitable control. This lever 38, which preferably has the shape of a fork, actuates a ring 40 by sliding it on the controlled shaft 4. This ring 40 slides, by means of a pin 41, in an interior hollow. of the shaft 4 a piston 42 whose end 43 is profiled in the form of a cam, as seen in the drawing.
This piston 42 is constantly urged against the lever 38 by the action of a spring 44 and its profiled end 43 acts on a series of pistons 45 actuated by springs 46 and ending in a part 47 in the form of a rack, which meshes with teeth carried, by the end of the shaft 48 of the butterflies 29. Thanks to this arrangement, when the piston 42 moves to the right of FIG. 1, the profile 43 allows the pistons 45 to go up, rotating the butterflies 29. In this way, the mechanism can be controlled from the outside and simultaneously the position of all the butterflies 29, to open or close the passage of the liquid through the pipes 28.
