<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

"Method and device for filling bottles with beer, mineral water and the like".
It is known that it is very important in order for bottled beer to keep for a long time to prevent its oxidation, which is particularly likely to occur when beer mixes with air while it foams and gushes out. The same is true for certain categories of mineral water, the quality of which is altered by oxidation. Ordinary filling methods and devices can only incompletely prevent the oxidation of the liquid to be bottled since they do not completely prevent the splashing of the jet of liquid which flows out. and the resulting foaming and turbulent mixing with air.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
By virtue of the present invention, it is possible to fill bottles with beer, mineral water and similar liquids without practically mixing the liquid with air and thus achieve the most conditions. favorable to a lasting preservation of the quality of the drink.
The invention consists in principle of carrying out the filling during the use of bottles, which are closed by pressing, thanks to the pressure prevailing inside the bottle, of a valve body against its seat or by any other suitable means, gradually and quietly raising the level of the liquid from the neck to the bottom of the bottle, while the air or gas contained in the bottle escapes through an outlet pipe introduced through the neck up to the vicinity of the bottom.
The invention is easy to. understand from the detailed description which is given hereinafter with the accompanying drawings; attached to the support, which schematically represents an embodiment of the invention and in which: Figures 1 and 2 are longitudinal sections of the filling device in two different positions, and Figures 3, 4 and 5 show detail in three different phases of the filling operation.
The bottle 1 which has an inner ball closure 2 known per se is placed with the neck down on the sealing ring 4 of the pleating head 3. The filling chamber 24 of this head communicates by a pipe 12 which can be closed by a tap 13 with the liquid content of a reservoir 11, the level of which is higher than the bottom of the bottle 1. The reference notation
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
25 denotes a movable support of a suitable type which presses the bottle 1 against the sealing ring 4. A vent pipe 5, 8 movable vertically and connected to a flexible pipe 26, serves to release the air or gas from the interior of the bottle, the flexible pipe 26 leading to an upright pipe 9 which opens into the gas chamber 10 of the tank 11.
The pipe 5 is pierced with lateral holes 6 in its end to be introduced into the bottle 1. The filling chamber 24 widens downwards in the form of a cylinder containing a piston 14. The latter comprises a tubular piston rod. 15, which slides in an equally tubular extension 16 of the filling head 3. The two tubes 15,16 have on the right a longitudinal slot 17, through which the pipe passes, which forms an extension of the pipe 5 and is fixed on a control head 7.
The extension 16 of the filling head 3 comprises staggered shoulders 20, 21, 23, which cooperate with pawls there, 22 of the piston rod 15, controlled by the control head 7. The pawl-18 comprises carries a tooth 19. The pipe 5 passes tightly into the piston 14 and can descend there low enough to close the holes 6.
To fill the bottle 1, it is placed in the inverted position, the neck against the sealing ring 4 and pressure is exerted on it by means of the support 25. The pipe 5 is thus lowered low enough so that its holes 6 are closed. by the piston 14. The pipe 5 is then pushed upwards until its upper end meets the bottom of the bottle, at the same time pushing the closing ball 2 to the side From the start of the movement of pushed upwards, the holes 6 are uncovered and the compressed gas content of the chamber 10 @
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
from the reservoir 11 enters through the pipes 9, 26, 8, 5 inside the bottle, so as to establish the equilibrium of the pressures.
Once the tap 13 is open, the liquid passes from the reservoir 11 into the bottle 1 according to the principle of communicating vessels and its level rises quietly, while the gaseous content of the bottle escapes into chamber 10. tank 11 via pipes 5, 8, 26 and 9.
This movement continues until the level in the bottle 1 reaches the holes 6. From this moment the liquid begins to pass through these holes in the pipe 5 and fills it as well as the pipes 8, 26, 9 until that the balance be established.
Once the bottle is full, the tap 13 is closed and the pipe 5 is pulled down first by hand then by filling and lowering the pipe 8. The volume thus become free of the bottle 1 is filled, given that the liquid can no longer flow from the reservoir 11, with the liquid contained in the pipes 5, 8, 26, 9. Once the pipe 5 has been sufficiently lowered, the closing ball 2 comes to rest on its seat and automatically closes the bottle without the contents of the latter still coming into contact with the air.
But the pipe 5 descends a little lower still and its control head 7 turns the pawl 22 counterclockwise, tensioning a spring not shown, which loads this pawl. The pawl 22 leaves the shoulder 23 and the tubular piston rod 15 descends with the piston 14 under the action of the pressure prevailing in the chamber 24 as low as the length of the extension 16 allows. The second pawl 18 then falls behind the shoulder 21 and fixes the piston 14 in its lowest position.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
Due to the increase in the volume of the filling chamber 24 which has taken place by the descent of the piston 14, the level of the liquid contained therein falls low enough to arrive with certainty below the mouth of the pipe 5. The pipe 5 then descends until its holes 6 are blocked.
After having loosened the support 25, the full bottle 1 is removed and it is replaced by an empty bottle. So the pipe 5 is then mounted, le'piston 14 remains temporarily at rest with the piston rod 15, because it is blocked by the pawl 18 which is in contact with the shoulder / 21 (Fig. 2). As soon as the holes 6 are uncovered, the air or compressed gas starts to come out through these holes and to fill the chamber 24 and the bottle 1 .. But since the level in the chamber 24 is still much lower than the holes 6, The liquid can not spray or splash under the action of air jet or gas. The pipe 5 continuing to rise, the control head 7 passes against the rounded portion of the pawl 18 and drives it by making it come out of its notch 21.
The piston rod 15 and the piston 14 are driven by the control head 7, which is placed against the tooth 19 of the pawl 18 (FIG. 3). However, it only remains in this position until the upper end of the pawl 18 meets the oblique shoulder 20 and releases the tooth 19 from the head 7, which then continues its upward movement alone (fig. 5).
The tooth 19 disengages when the piston 14 has reached its upper end-of-stroke position and the pawl 22 has locked the piston rod 15 against the shoulder 23. The level rises in the chamber 24 under the effect. of the upward movement of the piston 14, But given that at this moment the holes 6 are already appreciably higher @
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
that the level of the liquid and that the gaseous fluid has already ceased to exit rapidly from these holes for quite a long time, the liquid can no longer atomize or foam. Once the tap 13 is open, the level rises quietly and without disturbance in the bottle.
The embodiment of the filling device shown and described is obviously not the only possible form according to the invention. Thus the proper relationship between the movements of the support 25, the piston 14 and the gas pipe 5, as well as the valve 13, can be achieved by any suitable means. The piston 14 itself does not have to serve as a guide for the gas pipe 5, but the latter can slide in a fixed guide of the filling head 3 and the piston 14 can form a desired part of the separating wall. - tion of the filling chamber 24. The piston 14 can also be replaced by a membrane.
The movement of the pipe 5 and the operation of the other moving parts of the mechanism can, instead of being done by hand, be produced by servomotors, for example, pneumatically, hydraulically or electrically. Instead of the inner ball closure 2, by corresponding modification of the filling device, it is also possible to use other filling systems.
