BREVET D'INVENTION SOCIETE ANONYME DES TISSAGES LESUR.
31 rue Saint Augustin, Paris - France
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

PATENT OF INVENTION SOCIETE ANONYME DES TISSAGES LESUR.
31 rue Saint Augustin, Paris - France
The present invention relates to a yarn supply and tension regulator apparatus applicable in particular to knitting machines. continuous or discontinuous movement.
We know that the needles of plucked knitting machines draw the yarn either continuously (circular loom) or discontinuously (rectilinear looms). In the first case, the yarn is usually supplied in a , an active manner, that is to say independent of the pulling or calling of the thread by the needles, by means of a conventional known device called the thread supplier. This usual device consists of two toothed wheels with long teeth meshing with one another. The rotation of the wheels is synchronized with that of the loom and the more or less accentuated engagement of les.unes teeth in the others enables the needles to be supplied with a determined quantity of thread.
In the
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
second case, the flow of the thread is passive, that is to say that it is subjected only to the traction or return exerted on the thread by the movement of the needles.
Active delivery has a higher result than passive delivery, especially when the machine knits either fragile yarns or yarns which are strongly twisted and have a tendency to twist. We know, in fact, that twists generally occur for the following reison: - To give the wire the necessary tension, it is clamped between two tensioning members, usually between two discs. But a very twisted wire behaves like a screw and the two discs which clamp it act like a nut. Thus, when the wire is pulled, it turns on itself and undergoes an additional twist. which causes the formation of tendrils. This drawback can sometimes be remedied by replacing the pinching by a chine circuit.
The friction required for the tension then only takes place over a portion of the circumference of the discs and the nut phenomenon no longer occurs, the wire no longer being able to turn on itself. Unfortunately, most often, the tension thus obtained is insufficient.
The present invention relates to a yarn supply and tension regulator apparatus, designed to operate on reciprocating rectilinear hosiery looms, but which can also operate on continuous motion circular looms.
The first purpose of this device is to actively feed the wire, according to the definition given above, at a variable speed, the tension being carried out without pinching the wire, or baffling it, the flow stopping automatically when the needles stop calling, the thread no longer having a tendency to twist even if it is very twisted.

This device essentially comprises a single pulley with decreasing section (advantageously frustoconical) animated by a synchronized or harmonized rotational movement with that of the loom to be fed with wire, this pulley extending at its smallest end by a stationary sleeve, a caliper swivel fitted with two barbels guiding the wire passing around the pulley, a caliper balancing system allowing it to take variable inclinations according to the inrush tension of the wire, finally two fixed wire guides placed respectively upstream and downstream of said barbs on either side of the pulley.
The appended schematic drawing represents, by way of example, illustrative but not limiting, one of the possible but very simplified mechanical embodiments of this device.
Fig. 1 is an elevational view of this apparatus showing the caliper drawn in solid lines in the operating position and drawn in phantom in the rest position, the front plate being assumed to be omitted.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of this apparatus, showing the beam on which the wire is wound.
The rod 3 is a sectional view of the frustoconical pulley at the height of the place where it is strapped by the wire being wound on the receiving beam.
As can be seen in the drawing, this device comprises a single pulley constituted by a body of revolution 1 of substantially frustoconical shape. This pulley 1 has a rough surface (for example emerised) and extends beyond its small base and without turning back by an end piece or cylindrical sleeve 2 centered on a shaft 3 rotating in bearings 4 and 5 supported in the provided frame. of uprights 6 and 7. This ensures the centering of the pulley 1 during its rotation.
The outer surface of the cylindrical end piece 2 of the pulley 1 is smooth and connects seamlessly to that of the frustoconical body of this pulley 1, so that the wire! can pass without
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
obstacle from the rough surface of this pulley 1 to the smooth surface of the cylindrical nozzle 2.
Pulley 1 is driven by a rotational movement by an adjustable speed motor M. In the application of the principle to the various knitting looms, this ventilated pulley linked to the loom by a mechanism capable of ensuring the synchronism of the movements of the pulley and the loom. The mechanical connection will be of a type suitable for the trade considered. This mechanical connection is not shown here because it does not in itself form part of the invention.
A wire guide stirrup 8 with crossed branches forming a fork 9 is arranged so as to be able to take a variable inclination on an axis 10. The fork 9 carries two opposite fixed barbs 11 and 12 for the cross passage of the wire F. The movable arm of the stirrup 8 advantageously constituted by a metal wire of the piano wire type can oscillate on its axis 10 and extends beyond. of this pivot, by a bent part 8a. A metal chain 13 is fixed, on the one hand, to the extract of the bent part 8a of the pivoting bracket 8 and, on the other hand, to a grooved roller 14 which allows the chain 13 to be wound on it. - even or unwind it with respect to an axis 15 carrying at its end a knurled button 16,
so as to vary the length of the part between the hooking end of the chain on the oscillating bent part 8a of the stirrup 8 and the lower hanging part of this chain. It is by varying this length using button 16 that the tension of the - - wire is adjusted.
When it comes to a hosiery loom using a large number of spools (as is the case with a cotton type loom) all. chains 13 corresponding respectively to the spools are wound on a single axis 15 and a single operation of the button 16 makes it possible to adjust the thread tension of all the spools, with the certainty that these various tensions will be equal.

EMI5.1
The wire 've.ant d'une .o') ine oven; iisseuse suitable (not shown) passes through a fixed eyelet 17 embedded in a plate 18 fixed laterally to the frustoconical pulley 1 between the uprights 6 and 7 of the frame.
The wire then passes through the barbin 11 mounted on one side of the fork of the pivoting caliper 8, coughs the frustoconical pulley 1, passes through the barbin 12 mounted on the other side of the fork, then a fixed eyelet 19 embedded in a plate 20 placed symmetrically to the plate 18 on the other side of the frustoconical pulley 1 and fixed between the uprights 6 and 7 of the frame. Thread! then passes through an eyelet, 21 embedded in a plate 22 and is wound up on an emptying member 23 actuated by a shaft 24 driven by a motor M 'at adjustable speed, so as to make it possible to imitate here. fluctuations in yarn appeal in a flat knitting machine.
The rotational speed of pulley 1 is calculated so that the tangential speed of its average circumference is equal to the average wire take-up speed. If the flow of yarn 3 increases, the yarn lengths 17-11 and 12-19 tend to decrease, and the yoke 8 tilts to the left of the figure. As a result, the wire winds around a region of larger diameter of the pulley. The flow rate then increases automatically and the caliper 8 stabilizes in a new position. If, on the other hand, the flow of the wire decreases, the lengths 17-11 and 12-19 increase and the stirrup 8 tilts in the direction corresponding to a decrease in flow.
When the thread guide of the loom comes to the end of its stroke, the flow becomes zero, and as pulley 1 continues to rotate while calling for thread, yoke 8 tilts towards the top of the cone (i.e. say to the right in the drawing) to lay the wire on part 2, the surface of which is smooth and fixed.
The surface of revolution of the frustoconical pulley 1 ,, from its base to the section a-b is advantageously emery,
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
so as to avoid any slippage of the wire capable of causing the formation of 'twists. On the contrary, the part between the section a-b and the sleeve 2 as well as the surface of the latter, are perfectly smooth.
When the stirrup 8 tilts, the branch 8a lowers and the length of the hanging part of the chain 13 decreases, which has the effect of reducing the tension of the thread F. This reduction can be compensated for by the action of weights (not shown) fixed to the extensions of the branches of the stirrup 8. It is easy to calculate the weight to be given to each weight according to the weight per centimeter of the chain 13 and the lengths of the branches of the stirrup 8. The problem admits of a solution if the length of the caliper is large enough, compared to the length of the frustoconical pulley so that the angle at which the caliper 8 inclines is always small enough and that 'we can confuse the sinus and the arc.
In any case, the caliper 8 must be long enough so that, in the position corresponding to the rest of the wire on the cylindrical sleeve 2, the barbin 12 is not located too far above the frustoconical pulley 1.
The mechanical construction shown here is not exhaustive of the possibilities offered by the invention. Many variations are possible. This is how the frustoconical pulley can be placed either horizontally but vertically, its small base being placed downwards, the fixed eyelets 17 and 19 being placed higher not far from its large base. In such a case, the caliper 8 can be replaced by an adjustable weight device sliding on a slide parallel to. the wall of the pulley. This arrangement can be advantageous in certain cases, for example to reduce the bulk, but it is necessary, in such a case, to remove the chain, the role of which is fulfilled by another organ.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
It should also be understood that the apparatus described is a diagram of the possibilities of the invention. It is from this device that we can start with a view to specific applications in knitting looms and in particular in straight knitting machines, cotton looms and other pick knitting machines.
