<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

<Desc/Clms Page number 18>
<Desc/Clms Page number 19>
économies de combustible.
14. Ils sont insolubles dans l'eau.

Method of incorporating metallic siccativants into paints, varnishes, linoleums, inks, etc.
The invention relates to siccativants for paints, varnishes, enamels, linoleums, printing inks, etc., and it tends more particularly to the incorporation of; metal siccativants in commercial products for the purposes indicated.
The metal siccativants which are contemplated by the present invention include among others the following: lead) cobalt, iron, manganese, nickel, zinc, calcium, barium, cerium.
It is common practice to incorporate salts of these metal siccativants into paints, varnishes,
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
linoleums, etc., according to certain definite procedures. For example, these salts have been introduced in powder form by grinding them with vehicles at room temperature. They have also been associated with vehicles by mixing them in liquid form. In some cases, the practice has been to melt metal compounds, including the desired metal siccativant (s), with the vehicles in which they are to be incorporated, such as, for example, by firing lime with resin or cobalt acetate with a linoleum vehicle.
In the preparation of the siccativants obtained by cooking, it is usual to employ a vehicle which may consist of oils or resins or both, in addition with any volatile solvent, which is added after the end of the reaction. . The metallic compounds previously employed for this purpose have been of a great variety. For example, baked lead based siccativants have been commonly produced starting from litharge, lead acetate, and also from solid lead naphthenate, resinate or lineatate.
In the case of manganese, the raw material has generally been manganese dioxide, manganese borate, manganese acetate, as well as solid manganese resinate, naphthenate or lineoleate. In the case of these compositions solid, they were obtained by fusion or by double decomposition. Cobalt has been produced starting from cobalt carbonate, cobalt acetate, or solid cobalt linoleate, resinate or naphthenate.
The use of all of these metal compounds in the cooking process presents certain well-known difficulties, For example, when sodium dioxide is used.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
manganè, se, it is very difficult to obtain a complete reaction. With litharge, or lead acetate, lead tends to settle to the bottom, which consequently hinders the heating and at the same time increases the difficulty of bringing it into solution in the total mass.
In the case of acetates, such as cobalt acetate, it is virtually impossible to completely expel the acetic acid and the residue of this acid which remains, will seriously impair the effectiveness of the stability and siccativity of the siccativator. In the case of solid siccitants, such as naphthenates or linoleates, these are usually hard and thick masses, difficult to handle. Resinates have low solubility and require a long period of heat application in order to dissolve them in vehicles. All these difficulties .; which accompany the usual old approach, are satisfactorily overcome by the present invention in a simple, economical and efficient manner, as will be described more explicitly hereinafter.
The present invention firstly has in view the incorporation of suitable organic hydroxy salts, substantially insoluble in water, of the metal siccativants in the compositions into which they are to be introduced, at sufficiently high temperatures. high to cause a chemical reaction between the metal hydroxy salt and the vehicle whereby the metal hydroxy salt is solubilized and goes into solution in the vermin as it is. In previous practice, in which high temperatures were used, with metallic compounds, such as cobalt acetate or
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
litharge, or manganese borate, these metal hydroxy salts have not heretofore been used.
By the expression "'solubilized" we mean that the metallic carbonizing si is made soluble in the vehicle, in which it is to be incorporated, whereby it can come into solution therein, such as; it is specified. In the public execution of the present invention, the metal hydroxy salt (s) used first undergo preparation. The following methods have been found to give highly satisfactory results.

The inventor has found that compositions of the type described above can be used with a view to obtaining final commercial products, such as baked siccativants, paints, varnishes, linoleums, printing inks and other coating compositions, possessing vehicles which are organic, insoluble in water and form a film and whose siccativation depends on oxidation. In order to make the present invention easily understandable by resuming the cooking of siccativants in vehicles, we will compare the pra - Tick prior to that of the present invention, by first giving a conventional formula and then the corresponding process in accordance with the invention.

and it is found that the duration of the process is halved; that the production is increased from 22.7 liters to 454.6 liters, and that the siccativator had a siocativating capacity at least equal to the siccativator of Example Ia. In addition, it had a paler color, was free from slime, and its solubility was greater than. final product of Example Ia.
So, we got. not only a better final drying product, but considerable savings have been made in its preparation since the cooking time is reduced by half. In addition, no foam formed, which accompanied the process of Example 1a, and therefore larger batches could be prepared in a boiler of the same capacity. Due to the considerable formation of scum and foam caused by the cobalt acetate, it was necessary to introduce this salt in small quantities. In addition, the process was very time consuming and care had to be taken to expel all the acetic acid which was liberated in the course of the reaction ... The total reaction time according to this formula was approximately 3 hours. ..
Example III. - The present invention.
We observed. that when an equal amount of (23% metal content) cobalt-hydroxy salt was substituted for the cobalt acetate of Example IIIa, the entire reaction would proceed in one hour. The hydroxy-cobalt salt reacted with very little scum formation and almost instantly became soluble. In addition, the production in this case was increased by about 9 liters to a total of 510 liters. The stability of this formula was actually greater than that of the cobalt acetate secatant. In addition, its solubility in vehicles was much better than that of Example 111a. Its color was also superior to that of the latter formulation. Despite the increase in production obtained, the drying efficiency was slightly higher than that of Example IIIa.
This may be due to a certain extent because often the drying agents prepared on the basis of cobalt acetate retain a little acetic acid, which exerts an adverse influence on the drying.

As in Example IIIa, the addition of cobalt acetate was accompanied by heavy scum formation.
Vigorous stirring was necessary and the whole reaction was rather slow, requiring about 31/2 hours to complete. The product obtained carried some suspended matter due to the fact that it is impossible to obtain complete transformation of the products. inorganic salts used in this formula.
Example IV. - The present invention.
When, instead of cobalt acetate and lithar- ge, 8.16 Kgs of cobalt hydroxy salt (23% metal) and 20.41 kg of lead hydroxy salt 64% metal are used ) using the whole, the total reaction was carried out in 11/2 herure. The total production was increased by 22.7 liters, making a total of 1069.25 liters. The resulting siccativant was perfectly clear and had a higher drying efficiency than the final product of Example IVa. Its staining ability was less and its color was far better than that of the cobalt acetate siccativator.
Its solubility and stability in paint and varnish vehicles was much higher than that of the acetate-based siccativator.
<Desc / Clms Page number 13>
In addition, due to the complete absence of acetic acid in this formula, there was no danger of; discolouring the colors of sensitive lacquers in enamels, etc-, in which it can be incorporated. On the contrary, acetate-based siccativants often exert, by virtue of their retention of acetic acid, a highly detrimental reaction and discoloration on certain sensitive pigments, which are employed in the manufacture of paints and enamels.

Kilogs, because of the presence of the hydroxy salts themselves, and also because of the much lower cooking loss as a result of faster reaction and lower temperatures.
Despite higher production, the obtained siccantant showed a slightly higher drying yield over the final product of Example Va. Its color and its ability to stain are much more satisfactory than those of the siccativator it replaces.
In addition, its solubility and its. stability in the vehicles in which it was incorporated was much better than that of Example Va.
It is also possible to use the metal hydroxy salts described above for the preparation of solid silicativants, such as, for example, resinate siccativants, without the use of oils or solvents. For example, cobalt resinate or cobalt lineoleate is often prepared by fusing cobalt acetate with fatty acids based on resin or flaxseed oils. For this purpose it is possible to substitute the hydroxy-cobalt salt (23% metal) for the acetate.
It has also been found that it is possible to react the metal hydroxy salts with many other water-insoluble organic acids at temperatures above the decomposition temperatures of these salts. Examples of such acids. oleic acid, ricinoleic acid and capric acid can be avoided.
Although these acids as such do not necessarily form a film, their acid salts can be used in film forming vehicles.

Example VIa - Conventional method '.
103.69 kilogs of resin were melted, followed by 11.97 kilogs of cobalt acetate (23% metal). This resulted in an intense formation of foam and foam, which required the addition of acetate only in very small quantities. The total reaction time was approximately 3 hours. It was also necessary to expel as much of the acetic acid as possible, which was released in the process, because even small amounts of free acetic acid retained have a detrimental effect on the drying efficiency of the product. cobalt resinate.
Example VI, - The) present invention.
If instead of cobalt acetate we used an equal amount of our hydroxy-cobalt salt (23% metal), i.e. 11.97 kgs, the reaction proceeded very quickly and forming very little foam. The whole process takes place in less than an hour. The product obtained had better color, drying efficiency and stability than the acetate-based siccatant.
It was also possible to produce the resinates or linoleates of the hydroxy salts of lead or manganese in the same way.
Example VIIa - Conventional method. in
19.52 kg of manganese acetate was introduced in a batch of 93.98 kgs of flaxseed oil fatty acids. Due to the considerable formation of foam which always accompanies the fusion of acetates
<Desc / Clms Page number 16>
and because of the need to drive off as much as possible the acetic acid liberated, it was necessary to continue the reaction for a period of about 2.3 / 4 hours.
Example VII The present invention.
If instead of manganese acetate an equivalent amount of our hydroxy-manganese salt is used for the smelting, the entire reaction proceeded so rapidly and with so little foaming that it was completed in less. of one hour o The final product had better stability and a higher drying efficiency than the acetate-based siccativator,
We have also found that it is possible to use our metal hydroxy salts by baking them directly in oils, varnishes, etc.
for various reasons, such as for gas testing, faster incorporation, better drying, more intense gloss, etc., of metal siccativating salts such as naphthenates Sometimes solid resinates or lineoleates are introduced directly into the oil, varnish or other vehicle during heating. -For this application, our hydroxy compounds work excellently.
Example Villa. - Conventional method.
In a batch of 454 liters of heavily formed fast-drying varnish, while the varnish was heated, the following were employed:

Example VIII The present invention.
It was found that using 0.272 Kilog of our lead hydroxide (60% metal content) and 0.045 Kilog of our manganese hydroxide (30% metal content): would produce better drying, more beautiful; color with absence of mud.
From the foregoing examples, it appears that by carrying out the present invention in its preferred form, an aqueous solution of an alkali salt of an organic acid, capable of rendering the hydroxide substantially insoluble in water, is produced. at least one specified metal siccatant soluble in a film-forming vehicle at a temperature above the reaction point of that hydroxide.
This solution also contains a free hydroxide of this alkali metal. Separately, an aqueous solution of a water-soluble inorganized salt is produced of this metal siccatifier and the excess amount is molecularly reacted with the normal alkali salt of this acid to react the caustic alkali of the first solution. These solutions are then mixed so that they can react with each other to produce a substantially water-insoluble organic hydroxide of the metal siccant (s) employed.
At the end of the reaction, the hydroxy-metal thus produced is isolated, preferably dried and introduced in a divided form, suitable in an oxidizable organic vehicle, insoluble in water and capable of forming a film. , and the temperature is raised to a degree sufficient to react the siccativating hydroxy metal with this vehicle to give the desired end product.

It will be concluded from the preceding examples that the use of metal hydroxy salts as siccativants, as specified, presents several important advantages, for example:
1 They are very easy to process. (They can come in either powder or grain form or even larger particles, if desired).
2. They react very quickly and forming a minimum of foam.
3. It allows cooking of larger batches due to the rapidity of the reaction and the absence of foam.
4. They do not introduce into the cooked siccativator any foreign compounds or acids which could ultimately have an adverse effect on the drying operation.
They do not introduce into the siccativator foreign acids, such as acetic acid, which could react and discolor certain paint and varnish pigments.
6. They disperse and dissolve so quickly in the boiler that it is not necessary to shake vigorously.
70 They do not form a deposit in the boiler during the reaction as is generally the case with the usual metal salts.
8 As a result of their dispersing and dissolving so rapidly in the cooking vehicle they do not reduce to metal and therefore do not become inactive and worthless as is often the case. case when metal compounds are used, such as lithium,
9. They react at a relatively low temperature, resulting in less cooking losses and
<Desc / Clms Page number 19>
fuel savings.
10. The siccativants finally obtained do not give any sludge, and therefore do not require to be stored for a long period of time, which is generally the case with the cooked siccativants because of their content of mud.
11. The. finished siccativants obtained from these hydroxides are paler in color than analogous siccativants obtained from materials such as manganese dioxide *
12. The finished products have improved solubility and stability in the usual vehicles for paints and varnishes,
13. They are not hygroscopic, and therefore retain their ease of processing even under humid conditions. This is very generally not the case with some inorganic salts, such as cobalt acetate, which clump under humid conditions.
14. They are insoluble in water.
The examples given above illustrate the invention, but it should be extended to the contents of the appended claims.
