<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

The invention relates to an apparatus for covering metallic conductors such as wires and other similar articles with a liquid coating such as enamel, varnish, lacquer, etc.
It is an object of the invention to provide a simple and inexpensive coating apparatus for applying a layer of uniform predetermined thickness of liquid coating to a constantly moving wire, characterized by the
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
that when the device is not in operation, the wire is easily and quickly placed out of contact with the coating.
Another object of the invention is to provide a vertical covering apparatus, constructed in such a way that the covering wire can be quickly inserted and easily removed therefrom.
Another object of the invention is to provide a vertical coating apparatus, provided with means for transporting the coating substance from the feed to the wire and returning the excess liquid to the feed source.
The advantages and new features of the invention will be better understood by referring to the following description and to the accompanying drawings, given simply by way of examples and in which: FIG. 1 is a schematic elevational view of the various apparatuses used for the coating of threads, comprising the apparatus, object of the invention; FIG. 2 is a partial enlarged view of the apparatus, object of the invention; Fig.3 is an enlarged view of the section taken by line 3-3 of Fig.2; Fig.4 is a sectional view of a modification made to the apparatus of Figures 2 and 3.
FIG. 1 represents a complete view of the various apparatuses used for the coating of threads; sees that a wire 1 coming from a wheel (not indicated) passes over a guide pulley 2 then through the enamel application apparatus 3, constituting the main object of the present invention, through a die 4 adapted to remove the excess coating and a vertical baking oven 5 provided with heating elements, such as for example electric heating elements. The enameled and baked wire then passes over a pulley. 6 from which it is again directed to the coating apparatus and the oven, to receive new layers of enamel, or is taken up on a spool to be removed (no indicated).
The coating apparatus 3 is shown more clearly in Figures 2 and 3 and comprises a movable cylinder 7 provided with one or more grooves
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
circulars 8 through which the wire 1 passes on its upward path receiving a predetermined amount of coating. The cylinder 7 is fixedly mounted on a shaft 9 movable in its support 10. The pulley 11, mounted at one end of the shaft and connected to a suitable source of power (not shown), supplies the shaft and therefore at cylinder 7 a rotational movement.
The cylinder 7 is mounted above the pulley 2 in such a position that the wire 1 moves tangentially in the grooves 8 of the cylinder as it moves upwards from the pulley 2. The rotation of the cylinder 7 in clockwise, as shown in fig. 3, applies to the wire a certain amount of enamel from the feed source which comprises a container 12 fitted to the periphery of the cylinder on the side opposite to the wire. wire 1.
During the operation, the container 12 is substantially on the same horizontal plane as the cylinder and in this position, the latter cooperates - with the container 12 to at least partially close the covered side thereof so as to form a reservoir for the enamel 13. by this arrangement, the part of the cylinder in contact with the enamel 13, constitutes a hard-reservoir face containing this substance. The rim of the open side of the container, adjacent to the cylinder 7, fits perfectly to the surface of the latter, except for the grooves 8) through which the enamel can escape. As the coatings commonly used are more viscous substances, they tend to catch on the grooves 8 of the movable cylinder 7 and are transported to the wire 1.
The container 12 is movable on the shaft 9 and has a limited rotational movement around the latter; it is maintained during the operation in a substantially horizontal position by any suitable fixing device (not indicated). When for any reason the operation of the complete coating apparatus is stopped, the container 12 mounted with some clearance on the shaft, can be released from its horizontal position and brought to a position below the plane of the shaft. cylinder as indicated by the dotted lines in fig. 3. In this last position, the container having pivoted around the shaft 9 and the cylinder 7, touches the wire 1 and brings it out of the grooves 8.
In this lower position of no n

coating, the container of which the edge of the open face is perfectly adjusted to the surface of the cylinder, also serves to collect the enamel coming from the grooves of the cylinder or the die 4 above it. When the coating operation begins again, the reservoir containing the enamel is again brought into its working position in which it supplies the mail to the wire as a result of the rotation of the cylinder. it should be noted that, when the container is in its lower position, the passage of enamel through the grooves 8 is effectively prevented.
enamel
The container is also provided with a supply opening / 14 through which the fresh enamel can be introduced and an opening 15, placed above the supply opening 14 serving to prevent the overflow of. enamel in reservoir 12 in both the operating and non-operating positions. The opening is connected by flexible connections, to a filter pump and other equipment commonly used in wire coating equipment and in which the impure enamel is released from air, mud or other impurities before it. to be reintroduced into the coating apparatus.
The coating apparatus may advantageously, but not necessarily, be provided with a plate 16 bearing on the surface of the cylinder 7. This plate is connected to the face of the container 12 and is provided with a number of fingers 17. dipping into the grooves 8 and adapted to remove excess enamel therein. As the coating substances, due to their high viscosity, may contain a high proportion of air included in the form of scum or the like due to the agitation of the enamel during its application to the surface. wire through cylinder 27 or on its return from die 4, it is desirable that this scum be directed through opening 15 to the filter where it can be removed and where all foreign particles, such as sludge, dirt, or the like, - can be removed.
The liquid part of the excess enamel can be returned directly to the container 12 through the openings 18 made in the plate for this purpose. It is seen that, by this arrangement, the plate 16, bearing against the upper surface of the cylinder 7, serves to close the container 12, except at the openings 18. The fingers 17 are particularly useful during the application to the wire.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
viscous coating substances as they remove small bubbles from the upper part of the grooves 8 which would otherwise recirculate to the wire 1; they thus provide a satisfactory coating when the wire passes through the die 4.
The die 4b which removes the excess coating from the freshly coated wire and provides a thin and uniform layer of enamel thereon, can advantageously but not necessarily be of the self-centering floating type described in the patent. applicant company filed on March 14, 1947 (prov. no. 366580). With another type of die, the excess coating collected at the bottom of it, flows along the wire until it reaches the cylinder 7, where due to the rotational movement in the direction of clockwise from the latter, it is transported to the plate 16 and from there through the opening 15 and the holes 18, to the reservoir containing the enamel 12.
When the coating apparatus is not working, that is to say when it is in the position represented by the dotted line in fig. 3, the die 4, if it is not of the centering type automatic, will move to the left until the position represented by the dotted line, with the thread 1. On the other hand, if the chosen die is of the closed type, the thread 1 can leave the die through the opening and will reenter through it when the container is raised again.
Fig. 4 shows a modification of the coating apparatus in which the container is in the form of a tub 20 of rectangular section having an open side, closed by the cylinder 21. In this case, the cylinder substantially forms one side of a container and where the edge of the container opening bears against the surface of the cylinder, directly below the shaft, it may be desirable to provide an element contacting the wire and moving it out. of the groove of cylinder 1, when the rectangular container is lowered to the non-operating dotted line position. A projecting part 22, fixed to the container serves for this purpose.
The structural details of the coating apparatus provided with a rectangular receptacle are the same as those of the apparatus having a reservoir of circular or curved cross-section, shown in fig.3.

It will be appreciated that the apparatus described can be used for coating yarns of any type with a liquid substance even though this is to be dried and cured. In addition, the apparatus is not limited to determined wire sizes and for given groove sizes, it is possible to coat wires whose diameters vary between wide limits.
