Cet auto-viseur présente les principaux avantages suivants ! il facilite dans le domaine de la pratique, l'ob- tention de l'étanchéité à la lumière et aux poussières (ce dernier poin permet d'utiliser sans inconvénient des mi- roira de renvoi argentés en tête); il permet à l'usager de dépasser la position de profil et même de se photographier de dos,sous n'importe quel angle (certaines femmes peuvent par exemple désirer photographier leur coiffure sous divers angles);
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
La fig. 2 est le schéma optique de la lunette panoramique;
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
Ces résultats sont obtenus de la manière suivantes une biellette 318 est articulée en 319 et 320 sur les tubes 306 et 316, de manière que les traces sur le plan de la figure des axes parallèles 311, 312, 319 et 320 forment un parallélogramme déformable, il on résulte donc que le tube 313 reste constamment parallèle au tube 306; de même, une biellette 321 est articulée en 322 et 323 sur les tubes 310 et 316, de manière que les traces.des axes d'articulation 314, 317, 322 et 323 forment un autre parallé- logramme déformable; le tube 316 reste donc bien constamment parallèle au tube 310;

<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
dernier.
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

"Auto-viewfinder for photography or cinematography of portraits".
French patent application for addition dated October 4, 1946.
In the main patent, it was described, in various forms, a self-viewing device for photography or cinematography of portraits, allowing the user to photograph himself after having chosen the pose that suits him and judged the effect produced in the auto-viewfinder, which comprises an optical electronic or optical-electronic device, giving the person to be photographed an image, real or virtual, identical or substantially identical to that which forms on the sensitive layer of the camera, so that this image is seen by said person when it triggers the shooting.
The object of the present addition is a self-viewfinder of the above type, which is remarkable in particular in that it comprises in combination a panoramic telescope combined with a periscopic device allowing the user to place the eyepiece around him in a any position with respect to the optical axis of the camera and consequently to photograph oneself in any position with respect to this camera.
This auto-viewfinder has the following main advantages! in the field of practice, it makes it easier to obtain airtightness and dust tightness (this last point makes it possible to use silver-plated return mirrors at the head without inconvenience); it allows the user to go beyond the profile position and even to photograph themselves from behind, from any angle (some women, for example, may wish to photograph their hairstyle from various angles);
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The periscope system combined with the panoramic telescope gives the subject a real aerial image which remains very sufficiently bright, without however departing from the framework of pure optics as provided for some of the solutions envisaged in the main patent.
This addition is also aimed at the perisoopic device and the panoramic telescope, combined separately with the various devices described in the main patent.
In the attached drawing, given only by way of example:
Fig. 1 is a view, in elevation, with partial sections of a self-sighting device according to the invention:
Fig. 2 is the optical diagram of the panoramic telescope;
Fig. 3 is a view, similar to that of FIG. 1, of a variant.
According to the exemplary embodiment shown in FIG. 1, A designates the subject who wishes to photograph himself, for example from behind, and / the optical axis XX shooting lens. In the immediate vicinity of this shooting lens 1, is arranged along the parallel axis AB the optical input axis of the self-viewing device. The XX and AA axes are close enough so that the parallax error can be considered negligible. A first mirror 301 returns vertically, in BC, the optical axis of the sight, in a first tubular element 302. A second mirror 303 returns this axis along CD to the interior of a second fixed tubular element 304 etanohe at the center. light and the length of which is approximately equal to the distance from the jet A to the objective 1.
A third fixed mirror 305 returns it, in D, downwards, vertically along DE, inside a third vertical tube 306, mounted to rotate around the vertical axis DE on a surface 307 formed in the tube 304 around from orifioe 308 through which tube 306 emerges downward. At E, another mirror 3u9 returns the optical axis, along EF, inside a fourth tube 310.
This tube 310 is articulated around a horizontal axis 311, passing through E, on the vertical tube 306. A fourth mirror 312 returns the optical axis downwards at FG to F in a fifth tube 313, articulated on the tube 310 ; around an axis 314 parallel to the axis 311 and passing through F. Finally, a fifth mirror 316 returns in G the optical axis along GA towards the subject A, along the axis of an eyepiece tube 316, articulated on the tube 313 around an axis 317, parallel to the axes 311 and 314 and passing through G.
Rod and lever devices are provided so that whatever the oscillations of the intermediate tube 310 on the tube 306: on the one hand, the tube 313 remains parallel to the tube 306 (FG parallel to DE), and the tube 316 remains parallel at tube 310 (GA parallel to EF), on the other hand, the normals to mirrors 309, 312 and 315 remain constantly directed along the bisectors of angles DEF, EFG, and FGA.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
These results are obtained as follows: a rod 318 is articulated at 319 and 320 on the tubes 306 and 316, so that the traces on the plane of the figure of the parallel axes 311, 312, 319 and 320 form a deformable parallelogram, it therefore follows that the tube 313 remains constantly parallel to the tube 306; likewise, a link 321 is articulated at 322 and 323 on the tubes 310 and 316, so that the traces of the articulation axes 314, 317, 322 and 323 form another deformable parallelogram; tube 316 therefore remains constantly parallel to tube 310;
moreover, the mirror 309 is articulated on the tube 306 around the same axis (311) as the tube 310 and this mirror is rigidly secured to an arm 324, comprising a longitudinal window 325, in which the lug slides. 326 of articulation between them of the two equal branches 327. And 328 of a compass, said branches being articulated at their other ends at 329 and 330 on the tubes 306 and 310; therefore whatever the angular position of the tube 310 relative to the tube 3u6, the normal to the mirror 309 remains coincident with the bisector of the angle DEF; finally the mirror 312, articulated around the axis 314, likewise carries a rigid arm 331 on which are articulated around an axis 332, two links 333 and 334.
The link 333 is articulated at 336 on the arm 324 secured to the mirror 309 and the link 334 at 336 on an arm 337 rigidly secured to the mirror 315. The axes 332, 335 and 336 are arranged such that they form two. deformable parallelograms with the axes 311, 314 and 317 of the mirrors 309, 312 and 315; as a result, the mirrors 312 and 315 follow the movements of the mirror 309, when the tube 310 oscillates with respect to the tube 306, in such a way that their normals remain constantly following the bisectors of the angles EFG and FGA as desired.
Under these conditions, whatever the orientation of the tube 306 around the axis DE and the inclination of the tube 310 around the axis 311, which makes it possible to give any position in space to the mirror 317 around the user, therefore a position that anyone to this user brings to the shooting lens (sideways, in profile, from the back, head horizontal, lowered or raised) the system of mirrors 301, 303, 305, 309 , 312, 316 always brings the optical axis of the auto-viewfinder towards the eyes of the user.
The periscopic device which has just been described is combined with a panoramic telescope, intended to give an image, rejected to infinity along the GA axis, of the eyepiece housed in the tube 316.
This panoramic telescope, combined with the perisoopic device, is preferably constituted as shown in fig. 2.
According to this exemplary embodiment, the telescope comprises an objective formed by plane convex lenses 338 and 339.
This objective gives the object ab a first real aerial image a'b '. In the plane of the image a'b 'is arranged a first collecting lens 340 whose role is to converge the rays emanating from the objective (338, 339) towards a
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
another lens 341 which played the role of the first vehicle.
This lens 341 is arranged so that its focal plane
EMI4.1
is confused with a'b ', therefore with the lens 340. After passing through this first vehicle 3 * 1, it is clear that all the rays emanating from the same point of the object will follow a parallel path. A second vehicle 342, the location of which may vary depending on the length that one wishes to give to the system (to a certain extent, however, because too great a distance between the lenses 341 and 342 decreases the luminosity of the final image) forms a real aerial image a "b" in its focal plane. In the plane of this image is placed a second collecting lens 343, the role of which will be to make the rays which formed the image a "b" converge towards the lens 344 of the eyepiece; this slow

Of course, these characteristics are given only by way of example, but they answer all the data of the problem, in particular. they give the telescope an ooulaire ring of sufficient dimensions so that the two eyes can

the location of this eye ring is far enough from the last glass 344 so that in the pericoopic system described above, this eye glass is about 50 oms (h) from the eyes, that is say out of the scope of the shooting lens 1.
In the freeze 1, only the glasses 338 and 339 of the objective and the lens 344 of the eyepiece have been shown of the telescope; It is evident that on the optical path CDEFG of the above-mentioned periscope system are interposed at the desired points the lenses 339 to 343 so that the ocular lens 344 is placed between the exit mirror 315 and the eyes of the user.
Note that the tube 316 (FIG. 1) can more or less exceed the lens 344 to form a screen. This tube has an operating handle 346.
The device as just described would have a drawback, owing to the rotation around the axis DE of the mirror 309 which intercepts the rays reflected by the fixed mirror 305, the final image seen by the The user in the eyepiece would lie to the right or to the left, tilting in the plane of the lens 344 at an angle equal to that of the rotation of the tube 306 around the axis DE.
This drawback is remedied by interposing the optical path of the periscope system preferably between. the two lenses 338 and 339 of the auto-viewfinder objective where the beam is the most condensed a wolas- tom prism 346 or equivalent device mounted rotatable, its speed of rotation being half that of the tube 306 around of the DE axis. In these reconciliations, the effect of the mirror system 305-309 is compensated and canceled as the tube 306 rotates and the final image seen at 344 remains straight.
The rotational connection of the wolaston prism 346 to the tube 306 can be ensured, for example, as represented by a cable. (or belt) 347 endless passing over a pulley 348, fixed on the tube 306, and on another pulley 349 carried by the housing 302 containing the prism 346, the housing 302 being mounted to rotate around the axis BC.
It was pointed out above that the parallax error was quite small and therefore negligible: note that it would be possible to completely eliminate it by placing, for example, the objective 1 behind the mirror 301: the latter being mounted so to be retracted at the moment when the objeotif shutter is actuated (reflex system).
The device which has just been described which makes it possible to obtain very easily the luminous etanoheity essential on the BCDEFA optical path due to the use of tubular elements allows the customer who wishes to take a photograph of himself. 'bring with the aid of the handle 345 the viewfinder (eye glass) in any desired position and judge its image regardless of the direction of its gaze.
When he is satisfied with his own image in the viewfinder, he releases, for example with the foot and as described in the main patent, the shutter of the camera. Only the photos purely from the front cannot be auto-aimed, because, in this case, the viewfinder would be in the field of the shooting lens, it is easy to remedy this defect by combining with auto-aiming. viewfinder described, one of those provided for in the main patent and which with the aid of an auxiliary lens form in a window situated very close to the lens the reproduction of the image seen by this

latest. In the particular case of the front photo, the user would therefore not use the mobile viewfinder and would direct his gaze directly on the fixed viewfinder coupled to the camera.
It should be noted that in a telescope of the dimensions envisaged according to the invention, a suitable Wolaston prism would be heavy and expensive: therefore it could advantageously be replaced as shown in FIG. 3 by three mirrors 346a, 346b and 3460 suitably arranged! the light ray reflected in B strikes at c the mirror 346a inclined at 30. The reflected ray cd is reflected in d on the vertical mirror 346b, pu% in e on the mirror 346c also inclined at 30 and emerges along the input axis BC.
It is clear that the optical path is the same as that produced by an olaston prism and that if we rotate the system of mirrors 346a, 346b, 346c integral with each other around the axis BC the beams rays exiting at C will rotate around their axis at an angle equal to the rotation of the system.
It should be noted that it is easy to offer the operator, or even the user, the possibility of shifting by the action of an independent command, the rotation of the rectifier system (Wolaston prism, or equivalent mirror device) with respect to that of the tube 306, so as to keep the image in the viewfinder at a certain inclination, the artistic effect of which can be appraised by the user by looking in the viewfinder frame.
If, moreover, by the care of the operator or by any automatic recording system, the tilt of the image produced in the viewfinder when the shutter is released is recorded, it It will be easy, when printing the final photographic print, to give this print the same color and to deliver to the user a photograph identical to the tilted image he had in front of him when he triggered the print. 'shutter.
These results can be obtained, as shown in fig. 3, by passing one of the strands of the cable 347 which connects the tube 306 to the housing 302 on a fixed pulley 350, then on a mobile pulley 361 and the other strand on a fixed pulley
35é, on a mobile pulley 3b3, then on a fixed pulley 354
The two mobile pulleys 351 and 353 have their axes 355 and 356 guided in grooves 357 and 358 of a fixed support 359 and they are urged to the left by cables or other flexible links 360, 361, under flexible sheaths, connected to the two ends of a spreader 362. The latter is mounted to oscillate around a fixed axis 363 and is integral with a handle 364 moving in front of a dial 365.
In addition, the pedestal 362 is connected by a cable 366, in a flexible sheath, to a movable index. 367, against a return spring.
368 in front of the window 369, behind which passes the film or other film 370 of the camera. In fig. 2 index 367, window 369 and film 370 were projected flat in front of lens 1 for added clarity, but, of course, they are combined with that lens.
It is immediately seen that by the operation of the handle 364 it is possible to move the return pulleys 361 and 353 one to the right and the other to the left, which slows down or accelerates the rotation of the prism 346 or Mirrors 346a, 346b, 346c equivalent to that of the tube 306 and allows, consequently, to see in 1 eyepiece a more or less inclined image. Simultaneously, the index 367 moves in front of the window 369 and there results on the edge of the photographic negative, after development, a mark whose position varies with the inclination of the subject seen in the auto-viewfinder.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
By using this mark for the orientation of the positive print with respect to the negative, it is possible to reproduce on this positive the photograph with the same inclination as that of the image seen by the subject in the auto-viewfinder at the time. where he triggered the objective.
In Fig. 3, it has been assumed that the subject wants to take a face-on photograph, with his head raised, in order to show a second position of the periscopic device, but, of course, the device allows all positions.
Of course, the invention is in no way limited to the embodiments shown and described which have been chosen only by way of example.
Thus, the panoramic telescope image transmission system can also be adapted to any arrangement or combination of arrangements which are provided for in the main patent.
Conversely, the various other image transmission systems provided for in said patent, whether taken separately or combined with one another, may very well adapt to the periscope system described above, without departing from the scope of the invention. invention.
