<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
Au dessus de la fente de la plaque-écran, à ravers la quelle la poin.te du couteau est en saillie, est 'ventée une plaquette 58, dans lauuelle sont pratiquées des rainures hé- licoïdales, sinistrorsum d'un côté, dextrorsum de l'autre, dans laquelle on fixe, de manière facilemert démontable, des lan- guettes de guidage 43;
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>

"Apparatus for performing on-site grooves in the friction leathers of card dividers.
Continuous spinning cards are provided with dividers comprising two opposing continuous ribbons (or sleeves), of leather, which have not only a forward movement but also a transverse oscillating movement, in order to form the wicks. For this purpose, longitudinal grooves of little depth, placed a few millimeters apart, are made in the two sleeves.
The present invention relates to an apparatus intended to perform said grooves on new sleeves, or to perform them again on sleeves thinned by wear, while leaving the tapes on their relative pulleys in forward movement, by suspending the oscillatory movement.

In fact, on any strip of leather is made a single helical groove of which the pitch of the helix is only a few.

ques millimeters and such that, in practice, we can, o-r ,,, id6rer each turn as a circular groove.
According to the present invention, 1 cutting blade which makes said helical groove protrudes from the surface of an arched support which, by two parallel lines, rests on the cylindrical surface of the tape pulley, against which it is. The two lines are formed by the tangents to the two grooved rollers of the support, the cutting blade, or knife, obviously cannot penetrate into the leather more than it exceeds the sides of this cylindrical pulley. It is thus easy to keep the groove at a constant depth, which can also be made in ribbons that are severely thinned by wear.
The protrusion of the cutting blade and, therefore, the depth of the groove is adjustable; we can also settle

The helical shape of the groove can be obtained, quite simply, by applying the apparatus to the pulley slightly inclined with respect to the axis; according to an improvement of the invention, it is obtained with a rigonreu8emer, tnriforme, by providing the support with a lamella guide, parallel to the cutting lamella and at a distance of one step from that - here which penetrates through the first spiral conne through a rail groove, making the cutting blade perform trajectories

is very worn, an easy-to-apply advancement device, the fork, is used. this device camprend device includes
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
a guide rod threaded into a support fixed on the fork and a threaded rod prevents it from moving axially; this threaded rod is parallel to the guide rod which carries a control roller, it is screwed onto a small frame mounted oscillating on the guide rod and it is subjected to the action of a spring which tends to press the roller on the sleeve.
In this way, the threaded rod, which is prevented from moving axially, moves, when the roller is rotated by the sleeve, the small frame and, with it, the carrier and the fork, in the transverse direction by an amount , corresponding to the pitch of the propeller that we want to perform.
In order to facilitate the removal of material relating to the groove and to obtain that a worker not accustomed to the operation of the machine can perform it, the apparatus is provided with a support frame which rests on the means of a tile-shaped piece on the upper sleeve, which given its meaning. of rotation, tends to drive the tile; by keeping the fork of the appliance pressed against the lower sleeve.
The accompanying drawings give a few examples of embodiments in accordance with the invention.
The fi g 1 shows a first embodiment of the apparatus, in side view, partially in section, equipped for use by hand or by machine.
Fig 2 is a plan view, also partially in section, of the apparatus of Fig 1, tooled for use by hand.

Figs 4 to 8 relate to a second embodiment of the apparatus.
Fig 4 is a front view of the device. Fig 5 is a side view.

Fig '6 shows the blade holder block.
FIG. 7 is a view similar to that of FIG. 5 of the apparatus to which the device for forming the initial turns has been applied.
Fig 8 is a front view.
Fig. 9 is a side view of the apparatus to which the support device has been applied.
Fig 1o is a side view of the support device and Fig 11 is a front view of the same device.
Referring to figs 1 to 3, we see that the device comprises in all, inside the flange support 1 of the blade holder 2 and, on the outside, handles 5 and the arched support 4 of the rollers 5.
The rollers are not mounted directly at the ends of the arched support 4, but on one of the arms of two pairs of levers 6 pivoting on the support 4, the other arm of which is locked on the support by a bolt 7 . It is so. easy to adjust the distance between the two rollers, that is to say the opening of the are 6-4-6, according to the radius of the cylinder C, that is to say that of the pulley , the greater the thickness of the leather on which the tape or sleeve to be machined is wound. The tip 2a of the cutting blade, or knife, protrudes from the surface C by an amount equal to the depth of the groove.
This projection can be adjusted by means of the nut 8, after having loosened the bolt 9 which blocks, against the flange support 1, the handles 3 and the blade holder 2
The handles 3 can be oriented, independently of each other, according to the working conditions, being adjustable in one direction on the axis of the bolt 9 and, perpendicularly, on the axis of the bolt lo of the workpiece intermediate 11.
Between the two walls of the arched support 4, are
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
on either side of the central part, the threaded rods 12 (fig 3) which can turn and on which the nuts 13 slide, joined together by a stake 14, which,. by its curvature, matches the profile of the support and is provided along one of its edges with the small strip 14a which is perpendicular to it. The distance between the small blade 14a and the tip 2a of the blade can be adjusted by rotating the rods 12 provided for this purpose with screw heads
The walls of the support 4 are joined together by the pivots of the levers 6 and by the threaded rods 12 and furthermore by a tile-shaped plate provided with a slot through which the tip 2a projects.
By disregarding anything which appears in addition in the drawings (i.e. not taking into account the elements indicated with numbers greater than 15), and which is not necessary for the use at the hand of the device, it is used as follows; after having established the pitch of the helical groove by the distance between the point 2a and the blade 14a and after having fixed the depth of the hollow and the radius of the pulley (plus the thickness of the leather) by the distance between the rollers 5, the apparatus is clamped against the pulley by bringing the point 2a of the cutting blade towards one of the edges da ribbon, or sleeve, in leather, ensuring that the small blade 14a is facing outwards.
While the pulley turns and the transverse oscillation movement is suspended, the apparatus is moved slowly inwards so as to make the first turn in the leather; this operation can be carried out by slowly rotating the pulley by hand and it will be preferable to have traced the coil beforehand with a slight pencil point. When the first turn has been completed, the small blade 14a will be introduced therein and the other turns will automatically be made identical to the first with a rigorous pitch.

constant.
Instead of being at the dwarf, the apparatus can be used on a bar, parallel to the axis of the pulley and rotating in synchronism with it, which makes them advance automatically by means of a mechanism. composed of a screw and a nut. In this case, the apparatus is provided with a carriage 15, fixed to the walnut tree. a pin to the intermediate piece 16, fixed to the support 1 with the same bolt 9 of the handles.
In this case of course, the use of the plate 14 is no longer necessary, and it is removed by unscrewing the two screws which fix it to the nuts 13 the part 16 is fixed by leman chon 17, which is threaded on the threaded bar.
The sleeve is smooth, but through a window it carries a threaded sector 18 which can engage the bar. sector 18 can be n taken with bar or be released (that is to say removed from it radially by means of a cam mechanism whose shaft 19 is driven by the lever 20).
The carriage slides in the part 16, thanks to a slot 16 ', crossed by the pin which it cohorts. It is retained in a rear position, or, more precisely, the part 16 with the device is maintained in the advanced position, due to the fact that the part 16 is engaged between the arms of a lever 22 pivoting at 21 with the sleeve and that 'it is held by a lever 24 bearing on the spacer 23 and being subjected to the action of a spring 25 whose tension is adjustable by means of the wing nut 2ô.
The movement of the cam at the end of the operation by means of the lever 20 causes not only the disengagement of the threaded sector of the bar (and consequently the stopping of its advancement), but also the disengagement of the device from the pulley. (and, consequently, the cessation of machining of the

ribbon) thanks:. The oscillation of the lever 22 which slides the apparatus on the carriage 15. At the beginning of the operation, the carriage 15, that is to say the apparatus, can be moved axially on the sleeve 18 a few millimeters, to adjust it exactly by means of a screw 27.
The bar on which the sleeve is threaded is rotated synchronously with the pulley, to which it is assembled kinematically, for example by means of a transmission with gears, friction, belt chain, etc.
With reference to the variant illustrated in the figures
4 to 8, the fork can be seen at 28, on its two branches are mounted two pairs of curved arms 29 and 30 which can be more or less apart, depending on the diameter of the control rollers of the wiper blades and be blocked in position adjusted by means of set screws 30 The small guide rollers 31, provided with annular ribs 32, serve to prevent the device from tilting laterally during the machining of the helical groove, pivot between the pairs of arms. codale on the friction sleeve.
On the small bridge of the fork is fixed the screen plate 33 in the form of a tile, intended to rest, during
1'bepration on the sleeve. This plate has a central slot through which the tip of the knife passes through it.
34, fixed by means of screws 35, between two plates 36 which form a small knife-holder block mounted removably axially in the box-shaped part 37 of the fork. The sides, inside and top, of said box are completely open so as to allow the small knife-holder block to be easily and quickly applied in its seat and to be moved longitudinally in this seat.
This movement is effected by means of the screw 38, fixed to the small block, and of the nut 39 which pivots, but does not move axially, in a window.

te 4o open on the posterior side of the box. The small block is guided in its longitudinal movement by a pivot 41, which engages in a bayonet slot 42 of the block. By tightening the nut of this pivot, the box, the pivot and the small knife block are simultaneously locked in the adjusted position.
When you want to remove the small block, loosen the nut of the pivot 41, pull back the small block by turning the nut 39 on the screw 38, until the pivot is matched. 41 with the transverse portion of the net slit, then the nut 39 is slid into the slot 40 thus lifting the small block out of its own seat.
Both during assembly and disassembly, the impact and friction of the wire of the knife against the edge of the plate shell (screen thus eliminating any cause of degradation of said wire) is thus avoided.
Above the slit of the screen plate, from which the tip of the knife protrudes, a plate 58 is vented, in which are made heloidal grooves, sinistrorsum on one side, dextrorsum on one side. the other, in which the guide tabs 43 are fixed in an easily removable manner;
this plate can be placed at the desired distance from the tip of the knife, by means of the screw
59 The tabs, which may be single or greater in number on either side of the slot in the screen plate during the operation are engaged with the turns of the head of the sleeve still undamaged, when s '' involves ironing the groove of a worn sleeve and, in any case, with the turns that the knife has just forced, to ensure the transverse displacement of the device according to the pitch of the helical groove that must be iron or force.
If, on the other hand, a new groove has to be made, the transverse advancement device shown is used.

in Figures 7 and 8. This device comprises a support 44, which is suitably fixed the fork, and which is provided with lugs 45, in which is pivoted a transverse guide rod 46, which can be to take off. This rod carries, fixed at one of its ends, a stop plate 47, which can engage with the pivot 60 of the control roller and rest against the head of the sleeve which is to be grooved, so as to prevent displacements. relative, and a sector 48 provided with an arcuate guide slot 49, comprising a widened end 50.
On the guide rod 46 between the lugs 45, turns a small frame 51, subjected to the action of a torsion spring 52 which tends to make it turn towards the branches of the fork. On this small frame, is screwed a threaded rod 53 parallel to the guide rod and whose thread pitch is equal to the average value of the pitches of the helical grooves normally used in the friction sleeves. The diameter of the threaded rod 53 is equal to, or slightly less than, the diameter of the widened ends 50 of the slot 49, so that it can be removed from the guide sector 48 when brought into one of the extreme positions.
The threaded rod 53 has, at one of its ends, an annular groove which allows it to engage and slide while remaining parallel to itself in the intermediate part of the groove 49 In this intermediate position, the rod 53 is cannot / move in the axial direction, but it can oscillate freely around the axis of the guide rod 46. At the other end of the threaded rod 53 is fixed a knurled roller 54, which is pressed, during the operation against the trotter sleeve by the spring 52.
The speed of translation of the small frame 51 depends on the ratio between the diameters of the roller and the roller

sleeve control. So that this speed always corresponds to the pitch of the helical groove to be made, it is necessary to have a whole series of interchangeable rollers of different diameters so as to. always be able to choose the one that is most appropriate.
It is clear that with the device which we have just described, when the apparatus is clamped against the trotter sleeve and pushed inwards, the roller 54 is set in rotation. This being the case, the threaded rod 53 integral with the roller, pivoting about its axis, allows the small frame 51 to move and, with it, the apparatus, transversely to the friction sleeve, as a function of the nose of the helical groove that is to be formed, which, as indicated above, depends on the diameters of the roller 54, and of the machonusiner. Lersqueles preinè res turns are completed, one -oeuf remove the advancement device, because for the subsequent work the guide tongues 45 which are engaged in said turns are sufficient.
The stopper plate 47 and the sector 48 are fixed to the guide rod 46 by means of nuts, so that they can be easily removed, and the guide rod 46 can be removed from the support 44 in order to be able to replace the stopper. rod 53 of the small frame 51 by a recess of opposite pitch, followed that the helicodal groove is started by one or the other of the ends of the trotter sleeve.
To facilitate the operation, the apparatus is provided with two handles 55 which can be oriented in any direction. For this purpose, these neat are mounted on parallel pivots 56 placed at the ends of the arms 57 themselves mounted so as to be able to pivot at the ends of the pivot 41, which serves to hold the small blade-holder block in place by blocking it, and whose axis is perpendicular to the axes of the pivots 56.
The handles can, aina be more u

less spaced apart and angularly displaced relative to one another, so as to take the most convenient position for the work and can be locked in said position, by fully tightening the nuts mounted on the pivots 41 and 56.
Referring to Figures 9, lo, 11 it can be seen that the support device comprises two uprights 61 and 62 connected at the top to the convex tile-shaped part 63.
On the uprights, there is a transverse bar which can slide longitudinally and which comprises two end parts 64 provided with radial holes for the passage of the uprights and a central axis 64a on which the small support for fixing to the device pivots. machining, formed of two fins 65 and 66 joined together by a small cross member 70 The parts 64 are supported by springs 67 and 68 which are supported at the bottom on nuts 69 screwed to the threaded ends of the uprights 64. The support device is applied to the machining apparatus by means of the fins 65 and 66 which are placed. laterally to the S box of the device.
The tile 63 is supported on the upper macho NI, which, turning in the direction of the arrow, tends to entrain by attrition the machining device against the lower band to be machined N2 Consequently, the worker will only have to '' to exert a slight pressure on the handle M without having to bear the weight of the appliance, The appliance will be supported by the springs 67 and 68, the load of which can be adjusted by means of the nuts 69 which will help to maintain the device constantly adhering to the sleeve. The machining operation thus appears to be very facilitated because only the task of operating the machining apparatus is entrusted beforehand.
