<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
De même suivant la présente invention;

<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>

IMPROVEMENTS TO ROLLER BEARINGS ".
The present invention relates to roller bearings in which the rollers may be tapered or barrel-shaped and have an end of convex profile cooperating with a concave surface of a stop flange (or rib) provided on one or more. on the two rolling rings between which the rollers move, these rollers being thus guided by the flange which prevents them from moving obliquely so that a real rolling action can be obtained,
The object of the present invention is to reduce the friction. ment and ensure greater resistance to wear and oblique displacement of the rollers, in particular when the wheel is subjected to the thrust of heavy loads,
In a tapered roller bearing of the type shown, the spherical face provided at the large base of each roller has hindered.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
usually its center located at the real top of the roll which is hole. ve itself located on the central axis of the bearing, while the surface of the thrust flange has a spherical shape having the same center as the spherical surface of the roller,
In this known form of the bearing having concentric spherical surfaces, on the rollers and on the thrust flanges, it has been found that, under the inaction of heavy loads, the rollers deflect slightly and that actual contact by spherical surfaces between the rollers and the abutment rim is not currently obtained, so that unwanted friction and wear result.
According to the present invention, a roller bearing comprises rollers having ends on which are formed convex surfaces co-operating with the concave surface of a thrust flange provided on a rolling ring and is characterized by the fact that that the curves of the said surfaces of the rollers and of the thrust flange are formed in such a way that, when the bearing is not subjected to the action of a load, a contact is obtained by a line or by a point between the end of each roller and the stop flange and in a plane transverse to the latter, while, when the bearing is subjected to the inaction of the normal load for which it is intended, the deviation of the rollers,
or between the rollers and the flange produces approximately an integral surface contact between the rollers and the flange.
If point contact is to be obtained between the stop flange and the roller, said flange may have a stop surface having, in a plane transverse to%, c flange, a curvature such that, when the bearing is not located not under the action of a load, each roll is in contact with this rim by a single point located at the base of the rim, with a clearance between the higher part of the rim and the end of the rim. roller. Or the relative curvatures of the flange and the end of the roll can be chosen such as
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
point contact is obtained at the top of the rim when the bearing is not subjected to the action of a load, a clearance then being provided between the lower part of the rim and the end of the roller.
Likewise, according to the invention, a bearing, roller bearing rollers on the ends of which are formed convex surfaces cooperating with the concave surface of a stop rim provided on a rolling ring and this bearing is characterized by the causes the curvature of the convex surface of each of the roller ends to match the curvature of the convave surface of the abutment flange in a direction transverse to that flange, but not to match this curvature in the direction peripheral of the bearing, so that, when the bearing is free:
ned to a load, a line contact is obtained between the end of each roll and the stop flange in a direction transverse to this flange, with clearances between this flange and the side parts of the end of the roll whereas, when the bearing is under the action of the normal load for which it is intended, the deflection of the rollers or rollers and the flange produces approximately full surface contact between the rollers and the flange,
Likewise according to the present invention;
a 4-roller bearing comprises rollers on the ends of which are formed spherical surfaces co-operating with the concave surface of a stop rim provided on a rolling ring, and this bearing is characterized in that the surface spherical, each roller end has its center located at a point between the roller and the axis of the bearing, while the concave surface of the thrust flange has a compound curve, the radius of the curve in a transverse direction being smaller, equal to or greater than the radius of the adjacent end of the roller, while the radius in the peripheral direction has its center located on the axis of the bearing, the arrangement being such that when the roller

transverse line where point contact is obtained between the drawn of each roll and the flange, with a clearance between the latter and the side parts of the end of the roll, while, when the bearing is subjected to the load normal for which it is intended, the deflection of the rollers or these and the flange produces approximately full surface contact between the rollers and the flange.
The rollers may have a conical or barrel shape and the thrust ends of the rollers may have a spherical or parabolic bore. The invention applies to single, double or multiple row bearings and also to thrust bearings, or combined thrust and radial type bearings. in a plane development of the raceway and the stop flange.
Figure I of the accompanying drawing is an axial sectional view of a tapered roller bearing according to an embodiment of the invention,
Figure 2 is a projection plane of a fragment of the rou- lemetn

Figure 7 is a cross section of a bearing of the combined radial and thrust type to which the invention is applied
FIG. 8 is a plan development of the raceway and the stop flange of this bearing, showing the relative position of the end of the roller and said flange.
Figures 9 and 10 show variants.
Diaprés Figures I and 2 of the drawing, the thrust bearing shown comprises a circular row of tapered rollers 1, in the same horizontal plane and housed between a pair of thrust bearing rings 2 on which are formed tapered raceways, The axis of the whole bearing
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
oe which produces a contact approximately by integral surface over the entire extent of the faces of the rollers or of the flanges, As long as the bearing is subjected to Inaction of the load not only.
The large bases of the rollers tend to flatten out in contact with the stop edges, but they can also extend slightly and accentuate their convex shape shown in figure 1, and any increase in the convex profile may take place due to the corresponding slight deformation of the abutment flanges, the approximately full surface contact between the rollers and the flanges thus being maintained.
Of course 1''invention is applicable to thrust bearings with tapered rollers of different types such as those shown by way of example in Figures 3 to 6. Thus, according to Figure 3, only the bearing ring 3. is provided with a stop rim 4, the other ring 2a being devoid of this rim. The raceway of the flanged ring 2 is horizontal, while that of the ring 2a is inclined, to adapt to the surfaces of the rollers 1, In figure 4 only the ring 2 is united by a flange 4 as well as the embodiment according to Figure 3 but, in this case, the raceway of the ring 2 is inclined, while that of the upper ring 2a is horizontal.
D after figure 5, the raceways of the two rings 2,2a are inclined to adapt to the arrangement of the rollers 1, but a stop rim 4 is only provided on the ring 2,
Finally, according to Figure 6, the arrangement is similar to that of Figure I, except that only the bearing ring 3 is provided with a stop flange 4, the other ring 2a being solid. In all of these arrangements, the large bases of the rollers 1 and the contact surface of the debited rim 4 are shaped as described with reference to Figures I and 2.
In the application of the invnetion to a tapered roller bearing of the combined radial and thrust type, as shown in Figures 7 and 8, the oonic rollers 1 are interposed between a tapered raceway on an inner race. or cone 3.
and a corresponding raceway is
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
is represented by line a and the axis of each roller crosses the axis a of the bearing at a point b which constitutes the top of the bearing,
The large base of each roller 1 has a convex surface 3 of spherical shape, the center of curvature of which is located at o on the axis of the roller towards the inside of the bearing, between the roller and said axis a. This spherical end of each roller cooperates with a stop rim 4 provided on each rolling ring 3¯ but instead of being a spherical bore integrally matching the spherical surface of the roller,
the abutment surface 5 of this rim has a compound curvature as a result. te a contact by transverse line with the roller, when the bearing is not smiling at Inaction of a load. In a transverse plane the abutment surface 5 of the rim therefore has an arcuate curvature similar to that of the end face of the roller in the same plane, drawn starting from the same point o as the said face of the roller, as shown in the figure. figure I.
On the other hand, plan view, the surface of the flange 5 is traced in the peripheral direction of the bearing starting from a center located at point b, i.e. at the top of the bearing cone on the axis a of the bearing,
As a consequence of this conformation composed of the surface 5 of the rim, the spherical end of the roller 1, when the bearing is not subjected to the action of a load, is only in contact with the rim following a line located at x (figure 2) which extends transversely with respect to the rim, leaving a clearance - (, between the rim and the side parts of the endf of the roller on either side of the line of con- tact.
When the bearing is under the inaction of the normal load for which it is intended, the rollers are slightly deformed. their large base, the spherical surface being somewhat flattened in the peripheral direction. from the edge of the stops to the points of contact with this edge, so as to substantially match the surface of the said edge, the gaps being filled
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
provided on the inner periphery of an outer bearing ring or cup 7, the top of each bearing cone being located at a point b on the main axis a of the bearing, the axes of the rollers crossing the main axis a in this same point b,
The large base of each roller has a spherical surface 3 traced from the center o located on the axis of the rollers at a point closer to the rollers than point b. The spherical face of each roller is in contact with a stop rim 4 provided on the cone 2 The stop surface 5 of this rim 4 has a concave curvature in a transverse or radial direction, curvature which follows that of the spherical base 3 of the roller, and which is traced starting from the center o. On the other hand, in the peripheral direction said surface 1 has a curvature which, seen in a plan development of the oone (figure 8) is traced starting from a center situated at the point b, o ' ie at the top of the bearing cone, on the a-axis of the bearing.
Thanks to the compound curvature of the surface 5 of the flange, the spherical base of the roller 1 only comes into contact with the flange, when the bearing is not under the action of a load, along a line. 'located at x (Figure 8) extending transversely or radially with respect to the rim, thus leaving clearances 6 between this rim and the lateral parts of the base of the roller ,,
In the case of a thrust bearing (figure let 2) and when the bearing is subjected, the action of the normal load for which it is intended, the rollers deform in such a way that their large base substantially follows the surface. of the abutment flange which produces approximately integral surface contact between the faces of the rollers and the flange.
In the bearing described with reference to Figures I and 2, any increase in the convex profile of the end of the rollers at a load, seen in the plane according to Figure 1, can take place by deformation of the flange of stop, as has been described previously, but, in the embodiment dtafter FIG. 9, the need to allow the deformation of the rim 4
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
so that it adapts to the convex profile of the roller is avoided by the fact that the abutment surface 5 of the rim is provided with an arcuate curvature in a transverse plane, having its center at a point such that c is located placed on the roller axis at a point closer to the roller than point. 2.
which constitutes the center of curvature of the end 3 of the roller and which is itself located closer to the roller than the apex b of the rolling cone. In this way, when the bearing is not subjected to a load, the large base 3 of each roller 1 is in contact with the stop edges ± of the bearing rings 3. at a single point located at y cI ie . the base of the edges, with a clearance 8 in a transverse plane of the edges. When the bearing is under the action of a normal load for which it is intended, the set 8 is filled without any deformation of the abutment edges and this by the fact that the convex profile of the rollers in a plane transverse to the edges is emphasized.
In this way, an approximately full surface contact is obtained between the bases of the rollers and the flanges when the bearing is subjected to the action of a normal load,
Of course, the same modification of the profile of the abutment rim can be carried out in the case of a combined radial and abutment bearing el that is represented by Figures 7 and 8,
In the variant shown in figure IO,
the abutment surface 5 of the flange 4 has an arcuate curvature in a transverse plane which has a greater radius than that of the spherical base 3 of the roller 1 and which is drawn starting from the point o located on the axis of the bearing in a point further from the roller than the point o which forms the center of curvature of said face 3 of the roller and which,. in turn, is closer to the roller than the top of the rolling cone at b. When the bearing is not subjected to a load, the large base 3 of each roller is in contact with the stop rim 4 of the bearing ring 3. and this at a single point located therein, that is to say in the top of the ledge,
with a clearance formed at 9, in a plane transverse to the rim
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
between the lower part of said flange and the end of the roller, When the bearing is under the action of the normal load for which it is intended, this play at 9 is filled by the tendency of the roller to 1 '' flattening, in combination with a deformation of the rim, so that under the action of this load, an approximately integral surface contact is obtained between the end of the roll and the rim,
Instead of having a conical bore, the rollers can have a barrel shape,
The end of each roller opposite to the axis of the bearing having a spherical surface cooperating with a stop flange provided on one or both of the rolling rings and said spherical end of the roller as well as the contact surface of the flange of the roller. stop being set in the manner previously described for tapered roller bearings (Figures 1 to 9 so that point or line contact is obtained between the roller and the flange when the bearing is not under the action of a load.
On the other hand, instead of having a spherical force, the extremity of each roll may have a parabolic profile in section.
In a transverse plane, the contour of the abutment flange can be shaped so as to produce a contact by line or by point while, in the peripheral direction, it can have the same circular curvature as in the forces previously described, these curvatures being drawn starting from a point where the axis of the roller crosses the main axis of the bearing.
