Improvements to cushions or spherical joints
self-aligning
This invention relates to bearings or ball joints which have a one-piece outer member having an inner seat.
spherical and a rod, both of normal metal fusible at a relatively high temperature, and an intermediate spherical element interposed between the element
external and the rod, this intermediate element being movable either only with respect to the external element, or
relative to the latter and to the rod, and having its outer spherical seat, or both this and its internal cylindrical seat for the rod, made in one m- <EMI ID = 1.1>
This invention relates to a particular embodiment of the bearings or spherical joints of
this kind in which the intermediate spherical element comprises an annular body or carcass of fusible metal
at a relatively high temperature of which either the exterior surface only or both the exterior and interior surfaces are lined with a fusible metal.
a relatively low temperature which thus constitutes the external range or both the external and internal ranges of the intermediate element.
The bearings or ball joints of this kind constructed heretofore performed satisfactorily under moderate loads, but under greater loads, the relatively soft fusible metal
of the carcass tends to be pushed back in the axial direction from one end to the other of the space in which this metal
is found, so that there is play between
the different parts of the joint. or pad.
According to the present invention., The annular carcass of the intermediate element of a bearing or ball joint of the type mentioned -is provided with flanges
or shoulders coming integrally with it or rigidly connected at its ends and extending radially outwards, so as to partially or totally close the ends of the: annular space between the carcass
and the outer element, in which the fused metal is

out of this space! when subjected to a load. In order to be able to introduce the carcass into the outer element before casting the fusible metal around this carcass, it is generally necessary to cut diametrically opposed parts in each of the shoulders, but it has been found that this has no effect. appreciable influence on the expected effect of these.
When the carcass must be able to slide on the rod, for example when the ball joint constitutes a drive connection or a coupling between a crank button and a distribution sleeve to which a combined movement of oscillation and reciprocation is transmitted by this button, the inner cylindrical surface of the carcass as well as its outer surface, are lined with fusible metal seats, and in such a construction, inwardly directed annular shoulders or flanges may be formed at the ends of the the, carcass further shoulders or flanges directed outwardly, so as to partially or completely close the ends of the space between the carcass and the rod in which is the fusible metal which constitutes the scope of the latter.
In either case, the edges of the inner and outer shoulders may lie either flush with or slightly below the seating surfaces of the adjacent fusible metal so as not to contact each other. with the adjacent part of the outer member or rod.
The invention can be implemented in different ways; a method of construction of spherical articulation according to this invention intended to connect a crank knob to a distribution sleeve to which it impresses a combined movement of oscillation and reciprocation, is
shown by way of example in the accompanying drawings, in which: <EMI ID = 3.1> Fig. 1 is a longitudinal vertical section of an embodiment of ball joint according to this invention; Fig. 3 is a horizontal section of the device shown in FIG. 1, <EMI ID = 4.1> eg the external element of the joint, and FIG. 4 is a view similar to FIG. 3 of the carcass of the intermediate element of the joint.
In the construction shown the ball joint comprises an outer annular element of a single

lifted, this element, which can be arranged to be mounted rigidly in a sleeve formed at the lower end of the distribution sleeve, having a concave spherical inner bearing surface A '. Inside this external element A is disposed an intermediate spherical element comprising an annular carcass B made of fusible metal at a relatively high temperature, in the bore of which must be housed the crank button C serving to transmit the movement. to the spherical joint

sible D such as the anti-friction metal used in ordinary bearings, so as to form on this intermediate element B bearings for the button C and the external element A. This anti-friction metal is cast around the carcass B while 'it is in place inside the outer element A and, to allow the introduction of the carcass into the latter before casting., diametrically opposed parts of this carcass B are cut as indicated in B4 in Figs. 2 and 4.
For casting, a rod is used as a core to form the inner bearing surface or central opening of the intermediate element, the diameter of which is preferably a little larger than that of the crank knob C which engages in this opening, in practice. so that when the rod used as a core for the casting is removed after this operation has been carried out, the central opening of the intermediate element has a diameter such that there is between the crank knob and itself the clearance necessary for operation. The normal contraction of the fusible metal D during cooling also provides the clearance necessary for operation between the outer spherical surface of the intermediate element and the outer element A.
As will be noted, the casting of the fusible metal D on the carcass B and inside the latter is facilitated by the presence of the radial openings B 'which pass through this' casing to allow the fusible metal to s'. flow from the outside to the inside of it, re-
