Figure 1 est une vue de coté, partiellement en coupe, représentant deux roues à chaîne, reliées par une chaîne, les - roues étant munies d'anneaux élastiques suivant l'invention}
Figure 2 est une coupe suivant la ligne brisée 2-2 de la figure 1, vue dans la direction de la flèche de cette figure;
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

DESCRIPTIVE MEMORY
SUBMITTED IN SUPPORT OF A REQUEST
PATENT OF INVENTION the Company called: THE AUSTIN MOTOR Co. Ltd. New improved chain tensioner English patent application of April 13, 1944 in its favor and in favor of Mr. J.C. HAEFELI
The invention relates especially to roller chains employed as timing chains in internal combustion engines, more particularly motor vehicle engines, but it can be applied to other cases of roller chain drive.
The chain tensioner according to the invention comprises one or more rings of rubber or a material similar to rubber or of another elastic material, which are mounted on one or each of the chain wheels and which act radially outwardly on the chain wheels. chain links without bearing against the rollers, thereby automatically maintaining the chain under the appropriate tension.
According to one embodiment of the invention, each chain wheel carries one or more rows of teeth, the chain being of suitable shape, and one or more rings of rubber or similar elastic material are placed on one side. or on either side of a row of teeth and / or between rows of teeth of one or each chain wheel.
Practical embodiments of the invention are described below with reference to the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 is a side view, partially in section, showing two chain wheels, connected by a chain, the - wheels being provided with elastic rings according to the invention}
Figure 2 is a section taken along broken line 2-2 of Figure 1, viewed in the direction of the arrow in that figure;
Figure 3 is a section corresponding to Figure 2, but showing a different arrangement of the elastic rings.
In Figures 1 and 2, A denotes the larger of the chain wheels. It is wedged on a shaft B and is provided with two rows of teeth a and a ', between which there is a space b. The outer edges of the teeth have deep grooves c-c 'in which synthetic rubber d-d' rings are housed, the latter having proved to be more durable than natural rubber. The rings are held in place by pla- @

annular ques e-e ', fixed by means of long rivets f.
The smaller chain wheel C is wedged on a shaft D and is lined with outer rings gg 'of synthetic rubber fixed in a manner analogous to the rings d' but the fixing plates e2- e3 are maintained, in this case, by a shoulder h of the shaft D and by the nut h 'which holds the wheel C.
The latter is also provided with two rows of teeth a2-a3, spaced apart so as to correspond to the teeth of the large wheel; however the space between them is occupied by a deep groove in which is housed an additional ring d2 of synthetic rubber.
A double J chain with links 4 and rollers i 'passes over the two wheels and meshes with their teeth, and the outer peripheral contours of all the rings are at a sufficient radial distance from the centers of the wheels for said rings to act radially. outward on the chain links and raise the chain rollers a small distance from the bottom of the teeth, thus ensuring chain tension while greatly reducing noise that would otherwise occur. The ring d2 must naturally be put in place under tension.
In the variant shown in FIG. 3, the large wheel A 'is only provided with a single synthetic rubber ring d3 placed between the rows of teeth, the small wheel C' on the other hand being provided with two d4 and d5 rings placed on the outer sides of the teeth.
Obviously each of the wheels can have one, two or three synthetic rubber rings and if desired, each of the wheels can have only one row of teeth with a synthetic rubber ring placed on either side. on each side of the teeth. Furthermore, if desired, only one of the wheels can be provided with one or more rings of rubber or similar elastic material.
