<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
Les dessins ci-annexés feront comprendre l'invention même mieux enc or e.
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>
<Desc/Clms Page number 12>
vapeur.

<Desc/Clms Page number 13>

DESCRIPTIVE MEMORY filed in support of a patent application by the company: Heberlein & uo AG., "Method and device for the preparation of a textile material which is resistant to swelling and has strong crimp and which is resistant II.
Priority of two patent applications filed in Switzerland on 2 November 1943 and 18 February 1944.
According to known methods, the artificial yarns and in particular the rayon yarns are crimped by subjecting them to a strong twist, for example beyond three times the normal twist, by vaporizing them in the strongly twisted state or by treating them with swelling agents, and then untwisting them, possibly after removing the swelling agent, preferably a little beyond the zero point or neutral point, in the opposite direction. In this way, a stable crimp of the artificial threads is obtained.
It has been found in practice that these products can be further improved by subjecting them, before finishing, to a treatment intended to render them resistant to swelling. Such a treatment was especially advisable when starting with rayon yarns based on cellulose hydrate, given that the high swelling power of this material
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
in had adverse consequences / many cases. Such treatments are to ensure the. resistance to swelling / known in themselves, retort cala results for example from the French orevets 844.361, 883.547, 379.919, 882.150 or 885.218.
In contrast to the incorporations of artificial resin, which certainly also give rise to. a decrease in swelling power, but are eliminated by washing, the methods for ensuring the resistance to swelling cause a permanent decrease in the swelling power, since it is not a question here of mechanically introducing into the fiber resistant substances swelling, but to permanently modify the very constituent material of the fiber in such a way that its swelling power in water is more or less lost.
While until now these treatments for the resistance to swelling were always carried out before finishing on the crimped fiber, it has now been found, according to the invention, that it is advantageous to make the product resistant to swelling. at the time it is found, the state strongly twisted.
The advantage lies in the fact that, by this procedure, one obtains at the same time an improvement of the crimp, which makes superfluous ... a vapoposagege or a treatment by a swelling aent, while the yarn is in the strongly state. twisted; on the other hand, the effects of these last operations are still exceeded in many respects by the new way of operating. The process according to the invention for the preparation of a textile material which is resistant to swelling and having a strong crimp and which is stable by strong twisting, following untwisting, of smooth-fiber textile yarns consists, therefore, in that: The yarns are made stably resistant to swelling, by a method known per se, when they are in a strongly twisted state.
As starting materials for carrying out the process, consideration may be given to all the smooth fiber yarns which are accessible to treatment with a view to obtaining the swelling resistance, and therefore in the first place the rayon yarns obtained.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
from regenerated cellulose or yarns based on cellulose hydrate. Mention may also be made of short-fiber yarns of regenerated cellulose or of native cellulose, for example of cotton, linen or other bast fibers optionally cottonized, as well as yarns of fibrous material based on al- bumine such as for example silk, which, as is known, are accessible to treatment with formaldehyde.
Mixed twisted yarns and mixed yarns obtained from the above materials are also considered.
Strong twisting or heavy twisting can be performed on spools, as can untwisting. So-called false twisting or false twisting devices are also known (English patents 424,880, 442,073, 464,981; French patent 884,965 which make it possible to carry out a continuous strong transient twist, then a detoraion to return to the original twist of the yarn which passes through the wire. When, according to these methods, it was desired to untwist until passing the neutral point in the opposite direction, an additional twisting operation was necessary.
According to a further development of the invention, this additional twisting operation can be avoided when the threads momentarily twist strongly, in the direction opposite to that of their direction of twist, beyond the neutral point, at the end of the twist. using a false twisting device. Likewise, following a further development of the invention, it has been found that even short staple yarns can be twisted beyond the neutral point when at least two staple yarns are used together, one next to be it, or in the form of a twisted thread.
When employing a false twist device, it is further possible to employ an endless backing or accompaniment element, for example endless yarns xx or metal strings, when twisting beyond the point neutral yarn with fragmented fibers. In any event, this prevents the short staple yarns from unwanted separation or slack as they pass the neutral point.

In all the processes mentioned with a view to obtaining the swelling resistance, the yarn is impregnated with certain reagents, for example with solutions of formaldehyde and a catalyst or with materials which yield formaldehyde, such as for example a condensation product. formic aid and formaldehyde, and: n catalyst, or hexamethylene-1,6- urea diethylene- / or ethylene-urea derivatives with ammonium polyoxylate, or also alipnatic or aromatic diisocyanates , such as hexamethylene li6-diisocyanate, this impregnation can be carried out on spools or else be applied to the insulated wire. ', - this is also true for continuous work.
After the impregnation, the product can advantageously undergo a preliminary drying, of preliminary drying can also be applied on reels or with the insulated wire. prior drying is followed by the treatment proper tending to ensure resistance to swelling, as well as a reaction or condensation between the fibrous material, for example cellulose, and the reagents which are applied to it, and most of the time at relatively high temperatures, for example at 100 and above.
This treatment proper, having the function of ensuring the resistance to swelling, must take place as long as the material is in the highly twisted or highly twisted state, that is to say, for example, on coils after the strong twist, or in the insulated wire, directly after the strong twist, for example during rewinding in the strongly torud state, or during the momentary strong twist carried out using a false twist device, directly before detorsion.
If desired, the state of thorough twisting can also be maintained here throughout the duration of the condensation by adding a second rewinding device operating at the same speed. or Drying of the condensation is carried out using hot air. Other Mabitual heating modes are applicable, for example heating by infrared rays.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
After condensation, the yarns are untwisted, and, if desired, more or less beyond the neutral point, in the opposite direction. They can also be cut at an appropriate time into short fibers and be subjected as they are. for further processing, for example to be spun.
Another form of treatment is the yarns known as pin bed yarns (wholesale yarns); they can be treated according to the invention, that is to say be crimped and, for example during the operation intended to make them resistant to swelling with the aid of hexamethylene diisocyanate, be aminalised simultaneously and, in this form, are especially suitable for being mixed with wool.
The accompanying drawings will make the invention even better understood.
Fig. 1 shows an embodiment of a false twist apparatus, in elevation and in longitudinal section. A represents a bushing or sleeve which can be actuated and which rotates in a ball bearing. Inside this sleeve, a caster or small roller B, with a guide groove, is pivoted on an axis perpendicular to the axis of the sleeve, such that this axis is tangent to the periphery of the caster.
It is a counterweight, for example a spacer, intended :; to balance the wheel eccentrically rotated in the sleeve. Yarn D enters the device almost / centrically, in the direction of the axis of the sleeve, is entwined around the caster and leaves it in the same direction, almost centrically. As a result of this central guidance, any centrifugation of the thread is ex- due. Fig. 2 illustrates by a schematic sketch, the arrangement of a false twisting apparatus. The wire arrives, passing over the guide cylinders 1, in the impregnation trough 4 which it passes through, and is momentarily strongly twisted between the fixed points 2 and 6, for example pairs of cylinders, using the false twisting machine 5.
Between points 2 and 5 takes place the
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
condensation, and, if desired, the material can already undergo prior drying before 2. If desired, condensation can also be carried out, sucking the schematic sketch of fig. 3, between two false twisting devices 1 and 2 operating at marl speed. Here, the yarn retains, as we can easily imagine, its twist between 1 and 2.
Fig. 4 schematically shows the arrangement when an attendant is employed. 1 and 2 indicate here the fixed points, 3, of the guide cylinders for the endless guide, and 4, the false twisting device, FIG. 5 shows, in longitudinal section and in elevation, another embodiment of the device for producing, between two fixed points, a strong momentary torsion of a moving yarn.
A represents a sleeve which can be actuated by rotating in a ball bearing and in which are placed, one above the other, two rollers B and C, parallel to each other, which touch on the axis da sleeve and which are journaled so as to be perpendicular to this axis; of these wheels, one (B) is journaled so as to be fixed in space, while the other (6) can oscillate in the sleeve; that which is journaled so as to be able to oscillate is rigidly connected to a centrifugal counterweight D such that, when the sleeve rotates, the rollers are pressed one center the other.
With this device also, a rectilinear guidance of the yarn is made posible when strongly twisting between the fixed points, so that any centrifugation is excluded. This is important because at high rotational speeds during heavy twisting, and because of the wet state of the yarns, centrifugation can have unpleasant consequences.
A remarkable improvement or modification of the critical dent process consists in that, to give the resistance to inflation, quaternary salts obtained from the halogenated methyl compounds combined with tertiary bases, which give true aqueous solutions, i.e. say very scattered, which,
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
as a result, are able to penetrate inside the molecular apparatus of the fiber, after which these solutions are, after drying and strong twisting of the yarns, heated on the fiber to more than 100 C.
Examples include quaternary salts of chloromethyl or bromomethyl ethers or esters of aliphatic and aromatic alcohols or carboxylic acids, or mixed, monovalent or versatile, low molecular weight, or of phenols, and quaternary salts of halogenated methyl compounds comprising an -NH- or -NR- group instead of the -O- group, such as, for example, chloromethyl amides and secondary or tertiary chloromethyl amines.
The manufacture of the compounds mentioned is known per se,
Halogenated methyl ethers or amines or chloromethyl amides analogous to higher molecular weight aliphatic compounds such as fatty alcohols or fatty amines, or even fatty acid amides, comprising more than
10 c atoms, which are converted with pyridine to quaternary salts and used as emulsions, partly find use in the textile industry to render non-textiles / hygroscopic. In contrast to this, relatively low molecular weight compounds are employed in accordance with the present invention which, when converted to quaternary salts, give highly dispersed solutions.
Such bodies have heretofore been proposed only for animalizing cellulose fibers, in organic solvents. On the other hand, it was not known that these substances applied in aqueous solutions to the fiber cause, when heated after drying, simultaneously an animalization, an increase in the aptitude for dyeing, by means of substantial coloring materials. tives, and a decrease in swelling. As tertiary bases for the solubilization of the halogenated methyl compounds or for their conversion into quaternary salts, it is rationally employed. pyridine.
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
The advantage of the modified process is that, despite the reduction in swelling, there is an increased dyeability, while the methods known heretofore for providing resistance to swelling, for example using formaldehyde, / considerably decreases the dyeability.
Contrary to the behavior of the fiber in the case of the latter treatment, it does not occur, when the fiber is treated, to make it non-hygroscopic, by the halides of oxy-, or of araido -, or d The high molecular weight aliphatic aminomethylpridinium mentioned, or a decrease in swelling, or a change in the ability of the fiber to be dyed with acidic or substantive dyes.
By the process according to the invention, one obtains, in part by a continuous working mode saving time and space, fibers which, by their properties, differ from the starting material so fundamentally that one can qualify them as new materials for the textile processing industry. Textile materials of this new kind are distinguished by their woolly character, with marked and stable crimp, as well as their high power to retain heat. They can be made into pullovers, stockings and knits, and woven into fabrics for clothes and coats. The fact that, at the same time, their bulking power is reduced makes them also presumed.
The following examples show some embodiments of the invention, which do not exhaust this.
Examples
1. Actually thread / rayon viscose. of 450 den, at 60 fibrils .. and having a twist of 70 turns / ms by a bath of the following composition: Formaldehyde of a concentrated .. undue .. of 40% 40 cm3 Solution of aluminum sulphocyanate at 17 Bé 40 cm3
Water 860 cm

After complete impregnation, the excess liquid is removed by pressure, and the wire undergoes a. first drying in a stream @
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
of air at 60-700u. Then, the yarn is momentarily twisted at 1400 revolutions / La Z on a false twist apparatus.
On the twisting path, that is, between the pair of feed rollers and the twisting head, the yarn is heated to 150 Ci the duration of the heat action should be 1 minute , which must be taken into account when calculating the length of the twisting path and the yarn speed. When it has left the false twist apparatus, the yarn is unwound and vaporized, in the form of a coil, for 10 minutes, without effective pressure. A yarn with a woolly appearance is thus obtained; the elemental fibrils are strongly crimped, and the crimp is very resistant to washing. The swelling capacity of the fibrous material in water is diminished, and in this respect it also resembles wool.
2. We impregnate viscose rayon yarn, 1800 den. at 150 fibrils, having a twist of 40 turns / m S of an aqueous solution, at 30 C, containing per liter
50 g of hexamethylene-diethylene-urea, and subjected to pre-drying in a stream of air heated to 60-70 c. Then, momentarily, on a false twisting apparatus, is twisted at 750 revolutions / m Z. On the twist path, that is, between the feed rolls and the twist head, the yarn is heated to 165 ° C for 2 minutes. The yarn exiting from the false twist apparatus is cut into short fibers or strands of any length, and usefully opened in a closed opener.
In this way, a strongly crimped fluff is obtained which can be dyed directly with acid dyes, and whose swelling capacity in water is weaker than that of the usual cellulosic groins or fibrannes; this can be spun either alone or with other short fibers, natural or artificial, or both.
3. A 360 den copper rayon wire is impregnated. whose elementary fibers have a titer of about 1.3 den. and which has a twist of 120 turns / m S. of an aqueous solution containing
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
per liter:
130 g of formamide + formaldehyde condensation product
10 g of aluminum chloride, and it is dried beforehand between 40 and 60 c. then this yarn is twisted at 1600 revolutions / m S, on a ring twisting machine, it is heated to. the state strongly twisted, optionally in the form of a skein, for 15 minutes, at 110 ° C., and it is then twisted on a second twisting machine, beyond the neutral point, at 70 revolutions / m Z.
The yarn is then preferably unwound and lightly vaporized in the form of a skein. In this way, a yarn with a woolly appearance is obtained, the fibrils of which are typically crimped; the crimp is practically resistant to washing, and the swelling ability of the fibrous material is reduced.
4. A 20/1 meter thread of viscose fibranne. having a twist of 400 t / m Z with a fiber fineness of 4 den. , and a strand length of 120 mm, as well as a discose rayon thread of 450 den ,. whose elementary fibers have a titra of 4 den. approximately and which has a twist of 200 t / m Z, are twisted together at 150 t / m S. This twisted yarn is then impregnated with an aqueous solution containing, per liter. concentrated formaldehyde: 150 cm3 powdered zinc chloride: 20 g potash alum 10 g and subjected to preparatory drying at an air temperature of 60 C. Then the retorp yarn is momentarily twisted at 1000 t / m S , on a false twisting machine. in which two twisting heads rotating at the same number of turns are mounted one behind the other.
On the path between the two twisting heads, the yarn is heated in a hot air channel for 2 minutes at 125 C. When it has left the false twisting device, the twisted yarn is unwound and vaporized, in the form of a skein, without being stretched. We thus obtain a
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
twisted woolly appearance; the woolly character is hardly affected by washing, and the swelling ability of the fibrous material is reduced.
5. Twisted cotton, leached, consisting of 2 threads of 24/1 Engl. at 350 t / m Z and twisted at 100 t / m S is treated for 2 minutes with sodium lye at 50 Bé, and the latter is then advantageously allowed to shrink. The lye is then removed by washing with l water, water in turn by washing with alcohol, and the latter by washing with trichlorethylene. The twisted yarn which has undergone such a preliminary treatment is then placed for several hours in a 5% solution. tetramethyl diisocyanate in trichlorethylene; then the twisted yarn is, by centrifuged. released in excess of solution, and dried at an air temperature of 65 C. Then, the twisting is increased to 1200 rpm S on a suitable apparatus, for example on a twisting machine at ring!.
The material is then, in the strongly twisted state, heated for 5 hours at 100 ° C., after which the twisted yarn is again untwisted up to 100 t / m S. This treatment makes the twisted yarn bulkier; it acquires a typical resemblance to wool, not only from the point of view of appearance, but also as to its dyeing behavior, since, maintained, the fibrous material is dyed even by acid dyes; but on the other hand, the affinity towards substantive dyes is markedly increased. The elementary fibers present an increased crimp compared to the original crimp.
6. A 300 den thread. of non-scoured natural silk is twisted at 1600 t / m s on a ring twisting machine. The strongly twisted yarn is then placed in a hot bath at 25-30 ° C. containing per liter 2 cm 3 of a solution of industrial concentration of formaldehyde and is left there for 10 to 12 hours.
After that, it is dried at a higher temperature, after which the yarn is untwisted at 70 t / m Z. It is then unwound, slightly opened and, usefully, still suspended in an atmosphere of -il-.
<Desc / Clms Page number 12>
steam. A highly crimped silk thread is thus obtained, and the crimping effect is practically resistant to washing.
7. We pass viscose rayon yarn of 45U den. at 60 fibrils, and having a twist of 70 t / m S in a cold aqueous solution, which contains per liter:
EMI12.1
100 g of ethyloxymethylpyridinium chloride, the excess liquid is removed by pressing, and the yarn is then twisted momentarily at 1400 rpm on a false twist apparatus. On the twisting path, that is to say before the twisting head, the yarn is dried by a current of air heated to 185-190 c. When it has left the false twisting apparatus, the yarn is dried. wire is unwound under minimum tension, and it is vaporized for a short time, without effective pressure and without being stretched.
A bulky yarn is thus obtained formed of strongly crimped filbrils, the character of which is practically not changed by the washing and dyeing operations. The fibrous material thus treated exhibits a typical affinity for acidic dyes, and its affinity for substantive dyes is also increased.
8. 300 den viscose rayon yarn is passed through. to 60 fibrils, and having a twist of 50 t / m S. in a cold aqueous solution which contains per liter 50 g of the salt ammoi-

that quaternary obtained '. from the trichloro-ethyl ether of glycerin plus a corresponding amount of pyridine.
Trichloromethyl ether is obtained by introducing hydrochloric acid into a mixture consisting of glycerin and excess trioxymethylene. After deep impregnation of the rayon yarn, the excess liquid is removed by pressing, and the yarn is then twisted momentarily at 1700 t / m Z on a false twisting apparatus. On the path between the pair of pressing cylinders and the twisting head, the yarn is dried and heated for a short time at 190 C.
Preferably, this is done as follows: the yarn is passed over the twisting path, Through an insulated pipe, through which air is blown

is heated to 190-195 C. The calculated pipe length / such that the action of hot air lasts altogether about 1/2 minute and drying is completed for about half of the way. After leaving the false twisting apparatus, the yarn is unwound under minimum tension, and vaporized, without effective pressure, while it hangs freely in the form of a skein. A strongly crimped textile material is thus obtained, the swelling capacity of which is reduced, and which exhibits a typical affinity towards acid dyes and an increased absorption power towards substantive dyes.
9. Viscose yarn of 300 den., 60 fibrils and having a twist at 50 t / m S is impregnated with an aqueous solution of 80 g.

of acetamidomethylpyridin chloride # µm per liter (prepared for example according to British patent 475,670).
Two threads of the species are twisted together at 1250 rpm S and heated, in a strongly twisted state, at 180 ° C. for 1 minute.
Then, the twist is untwisted to beyond the neutral point, at 60 t / m Z; it is unwound, and lightly vaporized in the form of a skein without being stretched. A voluminous twist is thus obtained, having properties similar to those of wool, which can be dyed with substantive and acid dyes. The swelling ability of the fibrous material is reduced by this treatment.
