Fig. 1 représente ce cylindre en coupe longitudinale;
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

Compensating device for hydraulic cylinders.
The invention relates to systems in which the locking of a movable member in a determined position is ensured by a hydraulic cylinder, previously filled with a pressurized liquid, and the piston of which exerts a permanent action on this member which immobilizes it.
In these systems, the effectiveness of the locking - which results from the incompressibility of the liquid, such as oil, filling the hydraulic cylinder - is compromised by the variations in volume which may result for the hydraulic cylinder. liquid, variations in ambient temperature. If the liquid contracts, the lock loosens, and if it expands, the cylinder may burst.
These drawbacks arise in particular for locking the shoes or shoes of brakes used to immobilize the sets of wagons or other vehicles, when the latter are combined.

carry hydraulic braking, both when running and at a standstill.
The invention - which aims to avoid these drawbacks and the risks they can generate - consists in interposing, between the receiving member and the piston of the hydraulic locking cylinder, an elastic device which, by its mere presence , automatically compensates, to the extent necessary, for any variations in the volume of liquid in the cylinder.
This compensating device can be constituted: either by a spring, or by one or more elastic washers, of the type of Belleville washers, or the like, these indications being given only by way of example and without limitation.
In one embodiment of the invention, which will be more specifically described below, the compensating device transmits the action of the piston to an intermediate part which acts on the receiving member and which, in this regard, can be likened to a piston rod, which is not rigidly connected to the piston, or even to a movable base for the cylinder.
The appended drawing shows such an embodiment of a hydraulic cylinder, with a compensating device, according to the invention.
Fig. 1 shows this cylinder in longitudinal section;
Fig. 2 is a corresponding view, completed by the usual device for feeding the cylinder and unlocking the piston.
In the hydraulic cylinder 1, the piston 2 is movable - sealed by any suitable means, in the example, the linings - and which is intended to lock the receiving member 3, for example a brake shoe on a wagon.
This locking is obtained by sending, into the cylinder 1, a pressurized liquid whose escape is then prohibited by any suitable means, for example, by closing the valve 4,
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
through which the liquid has been forced into the cylinder until blocking of the shoe 3.
According to the invention, an elastic compensating device is interposed between the piston 2 and this receiving member 3.
'In practice, this compensator is constituted, in the example considered, by two Belleville washers 5-5, which are housed between the piston 2 and a movable bottom 6, which, in the example, is guided between the piston skirt and the internal wall of the cylinder, and transmits to the shoe 3 the resistance force of the piston after the cylinder has been filled.
Under these conditions, the compensating device 5-5 is elastically compressed when the cylinder 1 is loaded and it then plays the role of an energy accumulator which expands when the liquid contracts and which compresses again during - That the liquid expands, so that the blocking of the receiving member 3 is ensured permanently, automatically, regardless of the variations in the ambient temperature.
In Fig. 2, there is shown at 7, a valve box, attached against the bottom 6 of the cylinder 1. This box has a duct 8 for sending the pressurized liquid into the cylinder and it contains a piston 9 which is used to release the hydraulic cylinder, according to a mode known per se, This release is obtained by sending in a duct 10 of the valve box, a fluid under pressure liquid or gas, so as to push the piston 9 against the valve rod 4 and to cause thus opening this valve and placing the cylinder in the exhaust.
