<EMI ID=1.1>

Process for obtaining concentrated nitric acid from
aqueous nitric acid or waste acid.
The present invention relates to a process for obtaining concentrated nitric acid from aqueous nitric acid or mixed acid. These consist mainly of nitric acid, sulfuric acid and water; they are obtained during nitrations as residual aoidea.
From the residual acids, for example those which come from washing the nitrated material, nitric acid and sulfuric acid cannot be recovered frequently in one operation in a concentrated form, because the acids do not.
<EMI ID = 1.1>
It is necessary to treat them first with concentrated sulfuric acid in order to obtain by denitration a nitric acid of medium concentration which is then concentrated more strongly in a special operation.
According to the present invention, it is possible to carry out the treatment of the residual acids occurring during nitrations and washing of the nitrated material in order to transform them into nitric acid and highly concentrated sulfuric acid, in a single operation, by the fact that one introduced into the residual acid of the vapors: nitric acid approximately until reaching the boiling point of the mixture of waste acid and condensed nitric acid and the mixture is treated with acid boiling or hot sulfuric acid, the nitric acid vapors which then arise serving to be introduced into the waste acid and for heating the latter and the mixture of sulfuric acid
and residual acid then being denitrated in a known manner.
The process of the present invention is therefore based on the fact that as a heat source for the distillation of al-
-nitric acid, mainly boiling or hot oonoentré sulfuric acid is used. This not only avoids the dilution caused by the condensed water vapors, but the waste acid is also mainly concentrated in sulfuric acid. What is characteristic of the present invention is that a reheating of the waste acid is produced without increasing the heat consumption of the whole process and that furthermore at the same time a concentration of this necessary in nitric acid.
To avoid loss of: nitric acid or superfluous condensation of nitric acid vapors, reheating is not pushed completely up to the boiling point of the mixture from, during reheating, condensed nitric acid vapors and residual acid, practically in- <EMI ID = 2.1>
from the mixture of the heated waste acid concentrated in nitric acid with the hot sulfuric acid, only the quantity of vapors is produced which is necessary for the reheating of the acid mixture to be decomposed up to the vicinity of the boiling point .
Surprisingly, the mixing of the boiling or hot sulfuric acid with the residual acid enricni in nitric acid, heated to its boiling point, is carried out completely without shock, in a calm manner, in particular without any phenomenon of overheating and without nitrous gas proauotion.
Due to the large perceptible value of the boiling concentrated sulfuric acid, that is to say having a temperature

of sulfuric acid, a considerable part of the nitric acid distils in a practically free manner. The mixed acid freed from nitric acid vapors but still containing the remaining part of the nitric acid is freed

It is advantageous to choose the process conditions
in such a way that in the counter-current device it
Such a quantity of nitric acid is produced that it corresponds to the content of the residual acid in nitric acid. We have this possibility by choosing the quantity of concentrated sulfuric acid used for the mixture. Another possibility of regulating the procedure consists in employing a part of the mixed acid freed from nitric acid vapors.

The process according to the present invention can also be used for the concentration of aqueous nitric acid which does not contain sulfuric acid. In this case we do not get

The implementation of the method according to the present invention will be determined with the aid of the drawing which gives a schematic representation of a suitable device by way of example.
