<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

LOCKING MECHANISM FOR AUTOMATIC SWITCHES
The present invention relates to a snap action latching mechanism for automatic switches, such as circuit breakers, in which the abrupt latching is obtained by the action of a spring put under tension beforehand by the operating member. switch (handle, push-button, etc.).
In latching mechanisms which are not snap-action, it is known to use a knee system to ensure the locking of the mechanism in its latching position.
The invention p aims to obtain, starting from such a toggle system, a snap-action engagement mechanism, the construction of which is simple and requires few parts,
According to the invention, one of the arms of the knee lever system intended to lock the mechanism in the engaged position is arranged so as to form, with the control lever of the movable contacts, another toggle system which , in the triggered position of the mechanism, is broken, so as to create, on the mobile contact control lever, an oouple acting in the opening direction of the contacts.
In addition to the effect of allowing the spring to relax in order to operate the abrupt operation of the mechanism, this knee is, according to the invention, actuated by the operating member of the mechanism towards the end of the setting. under prior tension of the spring so that it breaks in the other direction, that is to say in the direction corresponding to the biasing of the contact holder lever towards the closed position of the switch.
The appended schematic drawings represent, by way of nonlimiting example, one embodiment of the invention.

Fig. i is a view of the mechanism in the triggered position.
Fig. 2 shows the mechanism towards the end of the pre-tensioning of the spring.
Fig. 3 is a view of the mechanism in the engaged position.
On all fig. the same reference figures designate the same elements or members.
The movable contacts 2, intended to cooperate with the fixed contacts 3, are carried by elastic strips 5 fixed to a control lever 6 made of insulating material capable of rotating about an axis 7. This control lever is subjected to the action of a return spring 4 which tends to separate the movable contacts from the fixed contacts. The control lever 6 is articulated at 13 with one of the arms 9 of a system of rods 9-10 articulated together at 52, and forming a toggle, the other arm of this system being articulated at 11 with a pawl unlocking 8.
@
The rod 9 of the toggle system 9-10, together with the part of the control lever 6 shown schematically by the dot-and-dash line 6a, forms another toggle system 7,13,12, which is broken downwards in the released position shown in fig , 1, the toggle system 9-10 then being itself bisected towards the. high.
The push-button 14, constituting the control member, is provided with a guide rod 15 which can slide in a bowl 16, in connection with the toggle 9-10 by a rod 18.
A locking spring 17 is interposed between the push-button 14 and the cup 16.
When the push-button is pressed, the force is transmitted by the spring 17 on the cup 16 the rod 18 and the two rods 9 and 10. The component of the force transmitted in the rod 10 is supported by the rod. pawl 8 retained by a hooking spout 19, which is, in a known manner, under the control of thermal or magnetic triggers not shown. The component of the force transmitted in the link 9 is supported by the toggle 6a-9.
Under the force transmitted by the connecting rod 9, the toggle 6a-9 tends to rotate the control lever 6 in the direction of opening of the contacts, that is to say in the direction of unlocking the locking mechanism ; this movement is however prevented by a fixed stop 20, against which the control lever 6 comes to rest.
In this position, the force exerted on the push-button does not determine any movement of the mechanism, except the shortening of the spring 17 and the movement of the guide rod 15 in the cup 16.
If the push-button is continued to be pressed, the guide rod 15 reaches the position shown in FIG. 2 and comes to attack the control lever 6 by forcing it to move closer to the fixed contacts 3. This movement determines the recovery of the toggle 6a-9 and forces it to break in the other direction.
From this moment the component of the compression force of the spring 17 which is transmitted by the rod 18, causes the automatic continuation of the movement of the toggle 6a-9; this movement is obtained abruptly, by the relaxation of the spring 17, until the stationary 3 and mobile 2 contacts come into contact (see fig. 3)
EMI2.1
In this last position, the latching mechanism + down is locked by the toggle 9-10 which breaks slightly, this breaking movement being supported and limited by the fact that a heel 9a belonging to the rod 9, comes lean against a nose 6b belonging to the control lever 6.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
The opening of the contacts is obtained by the darapel spring 1 by acting directly or indirectly on the hooking spout 19 or by causing the withdrawal (by means not shown) of the push-button 14 towards its initial position.
It is naturally permissible, without departing from the scope of the invention, to produce variants which behave practically in the same way as the embodiment described above.
