<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

11 (figs. 1 et 4) est cale un engrenage conique 13 en prise avec un engrenage conique 14 calé sur l'arbre 15, perpendicu- laire à l'arbre 11; sur cet arbre est calé un engrenage 16 en prise avec un engrenage 17, calé directement sur l'arbre du rouleau entraîneur 18 ;
Le rouleau 25 tourillonne dans le support 27, os- cillant autour de l'axe 28; il est constamment pressé contre le rouleau 18 par le ressort 27a; le mouvement est transmis par l'engrenage 23 à un engrenage 29 et, dudit engrenage 29, à l'engrenage 30,m qui a même axe que le précédente à l'engrenage 31, dont l'axe est confondu avec celui 28 du support oscillant 27 sur lequel il est monté, et à l'engrenage 32 calé à l'ex- trémité du rouleau 25;
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

"Machine for sawing and depilating skin.
Machines for slitting the skins in which the skin is slit, in its thickness, by means of a saw constituted by an endless steel band stretched between two rotating flywheels, have long been used in tannery; there has also been an attempt to use these machines as they are, without any modification, to depilate the skin, by sawing the hairs more or less close to the surface of the skin, but, until now, they have proved unsuitable for this job.
The present invention relates to a sawing machine of the aforementioned type, especially suitable for sawing,
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
hairs, and in particular hairs from rabbit skins, but can also be used successfully for sawing the hairs of other skins or for splitting said skins.
The difficulty in depilating rabbit skins resides in particular in that these hairs are not normally presented to the cutting blade, but more or less lying on the skin.
This is what happens in particular when the. skin is presented in front of the cutting blade, in the usual manner, by a series of two rollers rotating, the same speed but in reverse direction and pressed against each other by an elastic force a driving roller, in contact with the side flesh of the skin, and a roller in contact with the hairs.
To avoid this drawback, according to a first characteristic of the invention, these rollers are arranged so that the pile side roller rotates at a peripheral speed greater than that of the drive roller, moreover all arrangements are made, such as braking the movement. of the skin by the operator, groove increasing the adhesion of the driving roller, so that said roller imposes its peripheral speed on the driving of the skin.
In this way, under the action of the roller rotating at a greater speed, the hair that the blade tends to straighten, then to lie backwards, is prevented from behaving in this way, it is on the contrary pushed against the blade cutting before which it normally arrives at the surface of the skin.
On the other hand, according to a second characteristic of the invention, the skin is subjected to devices which exert a tensile force on it as soon as the hair has been cut, and this traction is exerted so as to force the winding of the hair. the skin on the driving roller, flesh side,
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
which has the effect of facilitating the straightening of the hairs.
Finally, according to a third characteristic of the invention, the machine is arranged so as to make it possible to very easily adjust the position of these roller devices with respect to that of the cutting blade, it is thus possible to take account not only of the wear of the blade, but also of the thickness of the skin, the flexibility of the hairs, the desire that one may have to cut them more or less flush, etc ...
Other characteristics of the invention will emerge from the following description of a preferred embodiment of the invention with reference to the accompanying drawing in which.
Fig. 1 is a front view,
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken along the line II-II of FIG. 1.
Fig. 3 is a partial side view, on a larger scale.
Figs. 4 and 5 are partial plan views, on the same scale as that of FIG. previous, and fig. 6 is a partial side view schematically showing the gears located at the end of the machine, other than that shown in FIG. 3.
The machine shown comprises a frame 1 at the two ends of which two flywheels 2 and 3 are journaled, on which the band saw 4 is stretched; the flywheel 2 is driven in rotation by the motor 5 and the belt 6 is tensioned by the return pulley 7; the position of the steering wheel 3 can be adjusted using the handle 8.
The rotational movement of the flywheel 2 is transmitted by the belt 3 to the pulley 10, slidably mounted on the shaft
11 that it can drive in rotation by means of a dog clutch; a lever 12a rotatably mounted around the axis 12 enables the operator to engage or disengage; at the end of the tree @
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
11 (figs. 1 and 4) is a bevel gear 13 engaged with a bevel gear 14 wedged on the shaft 15, perpendicular to the shaft 11; on this shaft is wedged a gear 16 in mesh with a gear 17, wedged directly on the shaft of the drive roller 18;
this roll rotates in two cast iron casings 19 located on each side of the machine. the two housings have at their lower part a circular guide 2, the center of which is coincident with the common axis 15 of the gears 14 and 16. Handles 21 enable the screws and nuts 22 to be actuated and to cause rotation around said axis of the housings 19 and of all the members which they support.
At the two ends of the roller 18 are respectively wedged gears 23 (figs. 3 and 4) and 24 (figs. 5 and 6) which communicate the rotational movement of said roller respectively to the roller 25, which pulls the skin afterwards. its passage in front of the saw 4, and the roller 26, which presses the skin against the roller 18 before its passage in front of the saw.
Roller 25 pivots in support 27, oscillating about axis 28; it is constantly pressed against the roller 18 by the spring 27a; the movement is transmitted by the gear 23 to a gear 29 and, from said gear 29, to the gear 30, m which has the same axis as the previous one to the gear 31, whose axis coincides with that 28 of the support oscillating 27 on which it is mounted, and to the gear 32 wedged at the end of the roller 25;
in this way the meshing is held between the gears 30 and 31, and the rotation of the roller 25 continues, even as its support 27 oscillates about its axis of oscillation 28.
Roller 26 pivots in support 33, oscillating about axis 34; it is constantly urged towards .le roller 18 by spring 35; the movement is communicated by the gear 24 in mesh with the gear 36, to the gear
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
37 which 0. same axis as him, to the gear transmission 38, whose axis coincides. with the axis 34 of the oscillating support 33 on which it is mounted, and to the gear 39 wedged at the end of the roller 26; in this way the meshing is maintained between the gears 38 and 39, and the rotation of the roller 26 continues, even though its support 33 oscillates around its axis of oscillation 34.
The ratio of the train of gears 24, 36, 37 38 and 39 is chosen so that the peripheral speed of the roller 26 is slightly greater than that of the roller 18.
Thanks to this arrangement, by acting on the handle 21, the supports 19 are made to pivot, and the position of the system of the rollers 18, 25 and 26 can be adjusted with respect to that of the blade 4, said rollers moving substantially normally. to the blade.
Another adjustment system enables the blade to be moved away from or closer to the system from the rollers 18, 25 and 26: it comprises (figs. 1 and 2) a lever 40, rotatably attached to a worm 41, meshed with a pinion 42 rotatably attached to a worm 43; this endless screw meshes with a nut 44, integral in translation with the support 45 of the saw 4; unerotation of the lever 40 in one direction or the other therefore makes it possible to bring the tang 4 closer to or away from the rollers 18, 52 and 26.
It goes without saying that many modifications can be made to the embodiment of the invention which has been described purely as an indication and in no way limiting without departing for this from the scope of the present invention; it is thus, in particular, that we can adapt all other devices for adjusting and transmitting the general movement to the different rollers, although that which has been described is particularly simple and robust.
