<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

Thin dielectric capacitors and method of their manufacture.
The present invention relates to the manufacture of capacitors having a thin dielectric, the thickness of which is preferably less than roof and is made up of titanium dioxide or materials containing it.
In accordance with the present invention, the necessary material is applied in a finely divided state to a core which consists substantially of carbon, followed by heating so as to ensure sufficient consistency and at the same time, preferably, heat. other properties which may be desired, after which the core is removed by oxidative heating.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The application of the material to the core can be carried out by immersion or projection using: a suspension optionally auditioned with a binder which is eliminated by combustion by heating in air. There is an advantage in applying the material by electrophoresis
After removal of the core by oxidative heating it is still possible, if desired, to subsequently heat the objects established to act on their mechanical and electrical properties, in any case, however, the first heating takes place in such a way that the The object to be established has acquired sufficient mechanical rigidity for the nucleus to be removed without hindrance.
The carbon used as the material for cores has the advantage of not reacting chemically with the input materials, which is a consideration here and, moreover, of having a very low vapor pressure if the heating intended to produce the necessary mechanical rigidity takes place in a vacuum or in an indifferent atmosphere; moreover, it can be very easily removed by oxidative heating.
In case of risk of cracks due to contraction. of the layer applied to the core, it is possible to choose the oxidizing atmosphere in which the heating takes place, in such a way that there is a reduction in the dimensions of the core as the deterioration occurs, for example contraction, acs dimensions of the object to be manufactured. In addition, the heat of reaction that is released during the combustion of the carbon core can be used for cooking.
The process which is the subject of the present invention offers the advantage of making it possible to manufacture thin objects in titanium dioxide or containing titanium dioxide, the. wall a., for example, a thickness of 50 or even in-
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
The shape may be such that they cannot be manufactured, or only with very great difficulty, by the molding and casting processes customary in the ceramic industry or according to the processes used in glassmaking.
In accordance with the invention, the thin-walled articles are used for the manufacture of small electric capacitors having a high capacity and a high breakdown potential as well as low dielectric losses, for example less than 20.10-4 measured by a length d. wave of
200 meters.
By internal and external metallization according to the process used in ceramics, it is possible, by means of a tube established according to the invention in titanium dioxide annealed so as to make it dense and the wall of which has a thickness of about 50, obtain, by example, a capacitor with a capacity of about 1500 F / cm2
EXAMPLE
A thin layer of rutile powder is applied by electrophoresis on a graphite rod. :. for this purpose a stable suspension of rutile in methyl alcohol is used. This suspension is obtained by heating anatase powder beforehand to a temperature of about 1350 c and crushing the pieces of rutile obtained in a steel mortar until everything passes through a 50 mesh sieve. per cm.
After. washing with water and methyl alcohol and drying, the powder is then peptized in an amount by weight five times greater than methyl alcohol. The rod to which the rutile is applied by electrophoresis consists of graphite powder or retort carbon powder which is press-treated, preferably after addition of an inorganic binder such as clay, to form a stem and which is then subjected to cooking in the well-known manner.
To cover the carbon rod with a layer of
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
rutile by electrophoresis, the rod is immersed in the above-mentioned suspension and it is given, for example for a few seconds, a voltage of -50 volts with respect to a nickel counter-electrode. The carbon rod thus covered is heated in air to about 1000 ° C, whereby the carbon oxidizes and is partially eliminated by combustion and at the same time the rutile layer is formed by cooking. to form a thin-walled tube with sufficient mechanical strength. The tube thus obtained can then be easily removed, after cooling, from the burnt part of the core.
By subsequently heating in air to about 1450 c at the same time as the tubes are placed on a plate of magnesium oxide, for example, they are further subjected to cooking so as to give them a high density. .
