<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>

"ALARM DEVICE TO PROTECT BICYCLES AND OTHERS AGAINST THEFT"
The invention relates to an alarm device for protecting bicycles and others against theft, this device being mounted in a housing which can be assembled with the object to be protected and triggered, after having been put into a state of activity, by moving maneuvering bodies in guide parts or slides and coming into action when the object changes position.
Fig. 1 of the accompanying drawings shows the principle of this alarm device.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
In a casing connected to the bicycle is mounted a horizontal slide A in which a metal ball B or a similar member can move, in particular in a position of inactivity (shown in full outline). If the bicycle is tilted in the service of the arrow, the slide A also tilts (dashed lines), the ball B therefore rolls, by. ' gravity to the other end of the slide A, where it closes a circuit 0 of a bell D. According to the invention, the inclination of the slideways for the movable actuators is made variable with respect to to the case which contains these components, so that the position of these slides can be adapted to the inclination or to the inequalities of the ground on which the bicycle is placed.
An exemplary embodiment of the invention is shown in FIGS. 2 to 13 of the drawings.
Fig. 2 is a plan of the device according to the invention, the casing thereof being removed.
Figs. 3 and 4 are respectively a front view and a side view of the device, the housing being shown in section.
Fig. 5 is an elevation of a locking or locking device cooperating with the operating members.
Figs. 6, 7 and 8 are perspective views of various details.
Fig. 9 is a front view of the housing.
Fig. 10 is a view of a partieu-free structure * of the safety cable serving to block the rear wheel to prevent it from turning.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
¯Fig. 11 is a circuit diagram.
Fig. 12 shows the mounting of the device on the bicycle, and
Fig. 13 shows different positions of the slides relative to the housing for different inclinations of the bicycle.
The device is fitted in a casing 1 (FIGS. 3 and 4) connected to a base plate 2, for example by means of screws, so as to be easily removable. The case 1 is fixed to the frame of the bicycle, for example under the saddle, by means of collars 3 (fig.12). On the base plate 2 is fixed the usual safety device used to block or lock the rear wheel to prevent it from turning. This device consists of a chain or a cable 4, one end of which is connected to the base plate 3. At its other end is fixed a non-removable key 5 (fig. 10), which can be inserted into a lock 6 (fig. 12).
The base plate 2 (fig. 2-4) carries a frame 7 divided by an intermediate partition 8 (fig. 3 and 4) into a chamber 9, intended to contain an electric battery 10, and a chamber 11 in which is mounted an oscillating body 12. The body 12 is disposed oscillating, by means of spikes 14, on a part 13 fixed to the frame 7. It consists of a plate 15, the lower end of which is made in an arc 16 (figs. 3,7 and 8).
On each side of the metal plate 15 are fixed small tubes 17 whose axes are horizontal in the longitudinal direction of the bicycle. In each of the small tubes 17 can move freely a ball
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
18, the various balls controlling in the way described below an electromagnetic relay 19 (figs.2,4 and 11) mounted in the housing of an alarm device consisting of an electric horn 20. In the rest position the balls 18 are at the opposite ends of the small tubes 17 in a position of inactivity (figs. 2 and 6) .Bllea are held in this position by a stop device 21 (figs. 3 and 6-8) whose construction and mode of action will be described later.
At those of the ends of the small tubes 17 which are opposite these extreme positions there are contacts 22 electrically connected to each other by a conductive wire (fig.2,6 and 7). To this wire is connected a pipe 24 leading to the relay circuit (iig.2). arranged
The plate 15, the small tubes 17 symmetrically with respect to this plate and the stop device 21 which cooperates with the balls 18 are united in a single body in which the distribution of the masses is chosen such that it always tilts with respect to the housing 1, in the event of changes of position in the longitudinal direction of the bicycle, so that its axis xx (fig. 3) remains vertical and that the axes of the small tubes 17 are consequently always horizontal,
When the bicycle is put down, the axes of the small tubes 17 therefore also remain horizontal whatever the inclination or whatever the unevenness of the ground (fig. 13).
The stop device 21 which cooperates with the balls 18 consists of a small rectangular box 25 (fig. 2,4,5 and 8) mounted above the small
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
tubes 17 and whose longitudinal walls 26 (fig. 6-8) pass through slots 27 and penetrate into the small shots bes 17. wings of the ends of the side walls 26 which penetrate inside the small tubes 17 are bevelled in opposite directions (figs. 6-8). The small cabinet 25 is mounted to slide vertically along a guide 25 'and can be made to occupy two positions. In the extreme lower position (fig. 6) the side walls 26 keep the balls 18 in the inactivity position and in the extreme upper position (frozen 7) they release these balls 18.
The following device is used to actuate the stop device 21, In one of the side walls 26 (fig. 5) of the box 25 is formed a curved slot 28 in which engages a lug 29 carried by a lever 30. able to oscillate around the pivot 30 'on the frame 7.
When this lever is moved from the extreme position indicated in solid lines in fig. 5 to the extreme position indicated in broken lines, the lug
29 slides into the slot, 28 and thus lifts the box
25 to bring it to the extreme upper position (fig. 6).
The lever 30 is actuated in a manner which will be described later by inserting the key 5 in the lock 6.
When the bicycle is placed on a perfectly horizontal ground, the position of the oscillating mounted body 12 remains invariable with respect to the housing 1.
When the bicycle is placed on an inclined or uneven ground, the pendulum 12 oscillates at an angle corresponding to the tilt of the ground. We then block the body
12 in this position. For this purpose a locking lever 32 (figs.3,7 and 8) which can rotate around the axis 31 is
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
mounted between the lower end 16, in the form of an arc of a circle, of the pendulum 12 and the intermediate partition 8 and it can be brought into two positions. In the extreme lower position of lever 32 (fig.3), pendulum 12 can swing freely when the bicycle changes position. If we move the lever 32 to the extreme upper position, this has the effect of pressing this lever against the end of the arc of a circle 16 of the pendulum 12, so as to maintain it in the position qu. 'he occupies at this time.
The locking lever 32 is also actuated by inserting the key 5 in the lock 6.
In the exemplary embodiment shown, the lock 6 is made of the type of combination locks, of known type. It consists for example of three disks 33 (figs.2 and 3) which can rotate with respect to each other and carry letters or other characters on their periphery. In the example shown, it has been assumed that the lock is only free for the passage of the key when the letters J, I, M (fig. 2) of the first, second and third disc 33 are placed on them. one behind the other on the same line as an adjustment mark 34.
The key 5 has an extension 35 (fig. 10) and it can be inserted into the lock 6 in two different ways, that is to say, so that the extension 35 is on the left when insert the key in the lock (fig. 4), that is to say that it is turned by 180 and, consequently, to the right (in fig. 4). To indicate these two modes of use of the key to the user, a designation, for example the word "Alarm" (fig. 10)
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
is stamped on the oelle of the laces of the key which is at the top in the first case of use cited.
The lever 32 which is used to fix the pendulum 13 and the lever
21 30 which serves to actuate the locking device / are arranged, with respect to the key 5, in such a way that the key engages under the lever 32 when it is inserted in the lock and thus pushes this lever back to 'in the locked position,' while the extension 35 co-operates with the lever 30.
When the key is inserted so that the word "Alarm" is at the top (fig.7), the lever 32 is first raised, which has the effect of fixing the pendulum 12 in its position; when one continues to push the key inside the lock, the end of the extension 35 grasps the lever 30 and pushes this lever inwards, overcoming the action of a spring 36 (figs 2, 5, 7 and 8) so as to make it pass from the position shown in solid lines in fig. 5 to the position shown in broken lines, so that the locking device 21 is thus raised in the manner described and brought to the @locked position. On the contrary,
if the key is inserted so that the word "Alarm" is on its underside, the introduction of the key simply has the effect of lifting the locking lever 32, without however actuating the lever 30, so that the locking device 21 remains in its extreme lower position
The device works as follows
When the bicycle is used normally the key 5 is engaged in the lock, the word, "Alarm"
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
lying at the bottom. The lever 12 is therefore blocked and the device 21 for blocking the balls is in the blocking position.
If the user now puts the bicycle down and if he wants to put the alarm device in the preparatory entry position, he first removes key 6 after having unlocked it, which eliminates the lock. locking of the pendulum 12, so that it oscillates relative to the housing 1 (fig.13) depending on the inclination or the unevenness of the ground on which the bicycle has been placed. After removing the key from the lock. The safety cable 4 is passed in the usual way, with the key located at its end between two spokes of the rear wheel (fig. 12), to prevent the rear wheel from turning, then the key is inserted. again in the lock, but so that the word "Alarm" is at the top and the lock is re-locked.
The introduction of the key has the effect, as described, of fixing the. pendulum 12 by means of the key in the position it has taken in the meantime, then, with the pendulum already fixed, lift the locking device 21, so as to release the balls 18. The device is located thus brought to the preparatory position of entry into action.
If anyone now tries to remove the bicycle fraudulently, it is quite impossible, no matter what precautions are taken to lift it, to avoid changes of position in the longitudinal direction, but as the pendulum 12 is blocked, the small tubes 17 also tilt to the horizontal. Depending on the direction in which the
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
the bicycle is then displaced, one or the other of the two balls 18 located in one of the small tubes 17 rolls downwards by gravity and meets the contact 22 which is located at the opposite end of the small tube. The circuit of relay 19 is therefore closed.
The connection diagram is indicated by ig.ll.
The main circuit 37, in which the horn 20 is mounted, or any other alarm device, is interrupted at 38. This cut-off position is only closed by the introduction of the key 5, by the mass of this key. . The relay circuit 39, in which the contacts 22 are interposed, is connected to the main circuit 37. Normally, no current passes through the adenoid 40 of the circuit 39 of the relay. It is only when one of the balls 18 meets one of the contacts
22 that the circuit 39 of the relay is closed. As a result the armature of the solenoid 40 is attracted and thus closes the main circuit 37 and therefore keeps the alarm signal activated.
The alarm signal sounds until the key has been removed, after unlocking, from the lock, by the rightful owner of the bicycle, which has the effect of cutting the main circuit 37 in 38.
To return the alarm device to the inactivity position, the lock is first unlocked, the olef is withdrawn, which releases the pendulum 12 and causes the locking device 21 to pass to the locked position under the latch. action of spring 36, That. done, we introduce the key again, but so that the word "Alarm" is at the bottom, which blocks the pendulum.
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
new, so that it cannot oscillate during normal use of the bicycle.
To prevent the balls 18 from already coming under the action of slight involuntary vibrations to the end where the contact is located and trigger / a @ n- if the alarm device, the running surface of the small tubes 17 carries a little before the contact positiona a small projection 41 (fig. 3), so that the ball, under the action of slight vibrations of the bicycle, moves well towards the contact 22, but can only go up to the projection 41, where it meets a resistance such that it stops there or rolls backwards. For the same purpose, the running surface of the small tubes 17 can be roughened or slightly inclined in whole or in places.
The front wall of the casing 1 has a notch 42 (fig.9) which engages over the lock 6 when the casing is put in place. The notch 42 is followed by a notch 43 adapted to the section of the key 5, so that the case is still held in its position, by the key inserted in the lock, when the fixing screws which fix the housing on the base plate have been unscrewed. In addition, to increase the sound, the housing 1 may also have slits or narrow holes 44, covered in the manner of a roof.
The device for preventing the rear wheel from turning is preferably set up in such a way that a circuit is closed and activates the alarm signal if the chain or cable is cut 4. Cable 4 is fitted. in an outer sheath 45 (fig. 10) of which

one end is fixed to the base plate 2 and the other ends to the key 5.
At that of the ends of the sheath 45 which is fixed to the base plate, there is disposed a socket 46 in which the end of the cable 4 engages. This cable end is connected to a plate 47 which can slide. axially in the sleeve 46. Between the plate 47 and the lower end of the sleeve 46 is mounted a spiral spring 48 which tends to make the plate 47 come out of the sleeve 46 by overcoming the tension of the cable, but this tension prevents normally this spring to produce this result. Opposite the plate 47 is a contact 49 (fig. 2,3 and 11) interposed in the circuit 39 of the relay (fig. 11).
If the cable is cut, its tension is removed; the spring 48 presses the plate 47 on the contact 49 and consequently closes the circuit, so that the alarm signal is retained. surely tit. So that the cable is always / stretched, it is surrounded by a metal wire helix 50 over its entire length.
