<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

Horizontal element boiler
The present invention relates to central heating boilers and similar boilers composed of superimposed horizontal elements, in which the corner-busting gases are constrained by the shape of the elements to follow a zigzag upward path during which they lick a large heating surface.
The main object of the invention is to improve the efficiency of these boilers by causing the water in the elements to follow an ascending path in zigzag parallel or substantially parallel to that of the combustion gases, so as to use the heating surface as much as possible and activates the heat exchange.

cl, qn, the enii chamber of each ho.ri. element, have, nl l 11110 rt fin- sieurs partitions or baffles which force the water to circulate, in the element to meander along successively the lower part and the upper wall of the element, licked by hot gases.
In a simple and practical embodiment, the element is divided into two parts by a horizontal central partition. If the water inlet and outlet connections are at one end of a single element. the partition extends from this end to a certain distance from the opposite end, where that is interrupted to establish communication between the lower and upper parts: of the element. If said fittings are located in the middle of a double element, respectively below and above the partition, the latter stops at a distance from the two ends of the element.
The single element advantageously has a section tapered from the end comprising the fittings and is surrounded by a ferrule of uniform height which it fills completely with the exception of a reserved gas passage between its tapered end and the adjacent wall of the shell. For the double element, the section is tapered at both ends, in the form of a lens, and a gas passage is reserved between each of the ends and the ferrule.
In the stack of elements of the boiler, horizontal partitions possibly forming part of the elements, can be interposed between the single or double elements to cooperate with them in the zigzag guiding of the combustion gases, or else single elements. can. be arranged alternately in opposite directions to extend between them and thus constitute between them a zigzag flue for the circulation of gases.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
A boiler can be formed of a single column of superimposed elements or of several juxtaposed columns.
In the latter case, it is advantageous to leave between these columns of elements a gap for the circulation of the combustion gases and to arrange on the outer side wall of the elements of fins or partitions intended to form by juxtaposition of horizontal baffles forcing them. gas to meander between the juxtaposed columns.
In order for the invention to be fully understood, embodiments thereof will be described below with reference to the appended drawing, given by way of example, in which:
Figs. 1, 2 and 3 are views of a boiler according to the invention, respectively from the front, side and rear,
Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section of a single element, on a larger scale,
Fig. 5 is a cross section of this element taken along the line V-V of FIG. 4,
Fig. 6 is a longitudinal section of a double element,
Fig. 7 is a plan view, and
Figs. 8 and 9 schematically show two examples of circulation of water and combustion gases.
In figs. 1 to 3, we see the boiler constituted by the stacking in column of an appropriate number of horizontal elements a surmounting a common hearth b heated with coal or oil, for example, and crossed in series by the flue gas flowing in a zigzag fashion to end in a common exhaust manifold c. The elements a communicate by their connections d with the water inlet and the water outlet! of the boiler. Doors g give access to the gas circulation flues for cleaning.
Les¯, two simple superimposed elements represented in figs. 4 and 5, each include a rectan-

gular 1 containing the body of water 2 of tapered section which is divided horizontally into two parts by a c: middle gosling 3 separating the inlet connection 4 from the outlet 5 and leaving a free passage 6 at the effective end. lée of the body 2. Between this end of the body 2 and one adjacent wall of the shell 1 is reserved a gas passage while a horizontal partition 8 extends from this wall of the shell to near the bottom of the interval between the bodies of water, where a gas passage 9 is also reserved.
The water circulating in the elements following the arrows x is forced by the partitions 3 to meander along the walls of the bodies of water, parallel to the @gzag course indicated by the arrows y, which is imposed on the ombus gases. tion by the shape of the elements and the partitions 8. As a result, the heat exchange is optimum, the heating surface area being able to be further increased by corrugations 10 of the walls of the bodies of water, shown in FIG. 5.
This figur also shows, on the outer side walls of. roles 2, horizontal fins of the binée to form chic @ for; gas circulating in the interval of two juxtaposed col @@ s of stacked elements, as it is understood: easily.
In figs. 6 and 7, the water body 11 of the double element has a lenticular section and the middle partition 12 which divides it horizontally into two parts, separating the connections (the inlet 13 and outlet 14 arranged at the mili @ of the element, leaving a water passage 15 at each excretion of the body 11. Likewise, a gas passage 16 is reserved between each end of the body 11 and the ferrule 17, which comprises two vertical partitions 18 above and below the
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
body 11 and horizontal partitions 19 leaving between them and the partitions 18 passages 20. The water circulates in zigzag following the arrows x parallel to the zigzag path of the gases indicated by the arrows y.
Fig. 8 shows schematically the circulation of water (arrows x) and gases (arrows y) in the case of an arrangement of the elements similar to that of FIG. 4, that is to say with all the elements directed in the same direction in comb teeth and alternating with partitions to baffle the gases:
In the variant shown in FIG. 9, the superimposed elements are directed alternately in opposite directions and form two combs whose teeth interpenetrate so that the free space remaining between the elements to constitute the gas flue is in zigzag fashion.
Here also the arrows x indicate the course of the water and the arrows y that of the gases.
Of course, the invention is not limited to these arrangements shown by way of example, nor to the shape given to the elements nor to the construction thereof, which may vary depending on whether they are cast in cast iron. or made of sheet metal, for example. Modifications can therefore be made without departing from the invention.
