<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

"Advanced Cast Iron Manufacturing"
The present invention relates to the treatment of high melt in the manufacture of castings, and one of the objects of the invention is the production of gray iron castings with increased graphite content and having greater resistance to water. traction and better transverse strength as well as greater density and hardness.
According to the present invention, the amount of graphitic carbon in a molten mixture containing at least 25% aoier and which, when cast, is gray in nature, is increased by the addition of a small amount of copper. '(Mendéléef periodic table, group I, series 4) and at the same time the graphite flakes are refined with the result that the density, strength and hardness of the part, final casting, are improved to an appreciable extent. These results are obtained whether or not a graphitizing agent is used. In other words, the copper itself constitutes the graphitizing agent or acts as an intensifier.

fxxx flower in combination with another graphitizing agent.
The invention is applicable to a white molten iron as well as to a gray molten iron and in connection with the former it is preferable to employ ouivre with a graphitizing agent following the manner described in the previous specifications. By the expression white cast iron, applied to molten iron is meant the molten iron which produces castings substantially free from graphitic carbon. By the expression gray iron, applied to molten iron, is meant a molten iron which produces castings in which there is more or less graphitic carbon.
In order for the invention to be fully understood, the examples below explain the effect of adding different amounts of drunk up to 3% of the cast iron mixtures, when the mixture contains steel in an amount of 70% or plus and calcium silicide in an amount of 1.95 kg per 1000 kg.

The foregoing examples show that the presence of copper in the mixture does not only further decrease the quenching properties, that is to say to - :, 'ment the deposit of graphite beyond and above that deposited by the sili-

binder or other graphitizing agents, but also increases the tensile strength and transverse strength and improves the hardness of the casting without increasing the cementite content.
It is believed that this phenomenon is due to the refining of the graphite flakes. A steel rich blend containing 70% steel is exemplified as the invention is equally applicable when the steel rich blend has a low content such as about 25% steel and a low content of about 25% steel. carbon content of up to about- @ 3.2%.
The normal reaction of a graphitizing agent is to soften a casting and reduce its density. for example a decrease in the quenching quality of cast iron from], 83 down to 1.20 om, which occurs when copper is added in amounts up to 2% (see table above), would be normally accompanied by a drop in Brinell hardness from 229 to 197, but when copper is used as an intensifying agent the Brinell hardness actually increases from 229 to 285. This is very unusual and clearly unexpected, as cast iron 2% copper contains more graphite than regular gray iron and should therefore be softer and less resistant.
The drunk can be added to the oubilot with the metal charge, in the state of elemental drunk, or by means of an iron alloy rich in drunk or containing about 10% copper, or it can be added under in the form of an ouivrsilioium alloy or in the form of copper shot or lead shot at that point. When an alloy of copper and silicon is used, silicon or copper may predominate; one can for example add an alloy containing 70% copper and 30% silicon or an alloy containing 30% ouivre and 70% silicon.
According to a variant-due
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
process, the powder may be introduced into the casting ladle in the form of an alloy of lead silio and calcium, o containing the following percentages of metals:
Copper up to 76%
Calcium up to 8%
Silioium up to 16%
Alternatively, copper scrap together with an alloy of silicon and calcium, magnesium or barium can be passed through the molten metal as it flows into the flow ladle. among the various graphitants with which the copper has been satisfactory in accordance with the present invention, the following can be mentioned:
calcium, magnesium, baryum, strontium, sodium, potassium, ziroonium, titanium, beryllium, cerium, nickel, molybdenum, silides of these metals, as well as silicon and ferro-silioium. It should therefore be understood that the reference to calcium silide made above was purely by way of example.
As regards the percentage of drunk employed, this will obviously vary, which is also true when another graphitizing agent is employed, depending on the properties and characteristics of the cast iron treated, For example, silicide Calcium is added in sufficient amounts to produce an appreciable graphitizing action, and copper is used in an amount to promote and intensify the conversion of the combined oaruone to graphite. In most cases, about three percent copper is used, more or less.
A "steel-rich mixture" as indicated above can be defined as a mixture of gray iron, pig iron and steel scrap, the latter.
