;Suivant la présente invention, des alliages à forte teneur en titane et à faible teneur, en bore contiennent @
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

The present invention relates to an alloy with a high titanium content and a low boron content.
The addition of small amounts of boron greatly improves the fracture properties of steels and alloys at high temperature. At least about one or two parts of boron per million parts of steel are required.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
necessary to ensure substantial benefits, and in some cases more than 50 parts of boron per million parts of steel eliminates workability and affects other mechanical properties of the steel. The most desirable boron content relative to one type of alloy has been found to be between two and 50 parts per million parts of steel.
The current practice of adding small additions of boron to high temperature alloys in the form of boron and iron alloys is unsure. Being. very small, the boron-containing agent must be carefully weighed. If an insufficient amount of boron is added, poor breaking stress characteristics result, while if an excessive amount of boron is added, the mechanical properties are adversely affected. Conventional high boron alloys containing 16 to 18% boron are not likely to be considered controllable because very pe-; These quantities are difficult to weigh accurately under normal operating conditions.
In addition, it is not certain that the boron will distribute uniformly in the molten bath to give a homogeneous composition * Iron-based master alloys; and low in boron content containing about 1.5% 2.5% are normally satisfactory additions in most cases; however, most of these alloys are not sufficiently universal to permit them to be used satisfactorily for the critical verification of the boron content of a melt according to a narrow and limited range. the order of 2 to 50 parts per million parts of steel.
According to the present invention, alloys with a high titanium content and a low boron content contain @
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
0.005% to 0.5% by weight boron, 61% to 90% by weight titanium, the remainder consisting of iron and associated impurities. The preferred alloy composition of the invention for use in the manufacture of steel and worked alloys comprises 0.01% to 0.20% by weight boron, 61% to 80% by weight titanium. , the remainder being iron and incidental impurities. If desired, up to 5% by weight of aluminum may be present in the alloy of the invention.
The high temperature properties of steels and other alloys can be significantly improved by the introduction of a titanium alloy containing a relatively small amount of boron. The Applicant has discovered that by using alloys containing from 0.005% to 0.5% by weight of boron, together with a titanium content greater than 61% by weight, the formation of boron can be more controllably obtained. a high temperature steel having improved breaking stress properties.
The efficiency of the addition of the high titanium low boron parent alloy of the invention is shown in the following table for typical breaking stress tests obtained on bars. of steel containing titanium, enriched with boron and completely annealed.
A typical analysis of the high titanium, low boron master alloy used for shaping these steel bars gives 66.66% titanium, 27.39% iron, 3.64%. aluminum, 0.04% sili- cium, 0.04% copper, 0.01% phosphorus, 0.06% carburetor, 0.13% nitrogen, 0.31% chromium , 0.04. % molybdenum, 0.6% oxygen, 0.014% hydrogen, 0.011% sulfur, 0.06% boron, and 0.3% manganese. From the above data it appears that when incorporating small amounts of boron in steels in the form of a low boron titanium alloy, a sixfold improvement in the stress life of
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
failure, as measured during conventional tests carried out on the cut bars.
The average elongation (9.7%) of the smooth metal bars treated with the subject alloy is almost four times the elongation of smooth bars having substantially the same basic compositions, but having a content of boron is less than 0.0001%.
One of the important advantages of the alloy of the present invention is that it permits the introduction of the desired values of titanium and boron into a melt in a single addition with improved tuning, as well as. a faster solution rate than with analogous alloys containing less titanium.
A typical high titanium, low boron alloy of the invention can be obtained by melting the correct proportions of iron and aluminum in an electrically excited furnace and adding appropriate amounts of aluminum and ferro. -bore in an inert atmosphere. The order of mixing of the ingredients used for the manufacture of a ferro-titanium alloy enriched with boron according to the principles of the invention, and an analysis of the product thus obtained, is given below. .
