<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

"Treatment process for foundry casting sand".
The present invention relates to a special process for the treatment of molding and coring sand used in fanderie for the casting of all parts.
The main object of the invention is the application, as a new industrial product in the foundry, of casein or of all products or mixtures of products based on or containing casein.
There is therefore a binder based on lactic casein or substitutes, which binder is mixed with the sand ordinarily used for the manufacture of molds and cores.
Casein or any casein-based product used as a binder or as a constituent product of a suitable binder, is perfectly dissolved by any products
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
known, such in particular ammonia, anhydrous sodium carbonate, borax, boric acid, etc.
The treatment of the sabla therefore consists simply of a mixture of said binder, varying proportions depending on the nature of the sand, the size of the molds or cores to be manufactured, the nature of the metal being cast, etc.
In general, however, but merely indicative, it can be expected that the amount of binder necessary to agglomerate 100 kilos of sand is extremely small and does not exceed pa kilos.
By means of this new treatment, the agglomeration of the sands in the wet state is perfect and the mold does not adhere to the model.
It should be noted that a rather surprising consequence of this treatment is that, for parts which are not too bulky, the use of rods is not necessary.
After a relatively short period of presence in the oven, of the order of 15 to 20 minutes for example, the mold can be removed and the mold plate removed. The mold is then returned to the oven for a further duration of about 45 minutes. after which it will be perfectly bagged and ready to use.
It should be noted that by means of the treatment according to the invention, cooking is not necessary, the drying thoroughly sufficient, given that the agglomeration takes place by solidification of the casein contained in the binder.
It is therefore superfluous to increase the temperature of the ovens.
Generally # 100 C is sufficient. After pouring, we will notice that the part will come out easily, the sand being completely disintegrated and therefore does not adhere to any place of the part.
In many cases again, the painting of the graphite mold becomes superfluous, the surface thereof being perfectly smooth by the action of the binder.
It is still to be noticed that the latter can be prepared
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
even forty-eight hours early.
The most important industrial result resulting from this new treatment of foundry sands is the very significant reduction in the drying time, given that at present several hours are required for drying, which still has to be dried. followed by a cooking operation. In addition, the molds can only be detached from the mold plates after two or three hours in the oven.
The object of the invention therefore achieves a considerable gain in ta.nps and the use of four to five times less number of molding plates.
It will also have been noticed that the recommended binder does not require a high temperature, the time of its passage in the furnace is much less and consequently the fuel economy is appreciable.
The elimination of the rods in most cases greatly facilitates the settling of the sand in the model, again resulting in a serious saving in time, material and manpower.
It should be noted that the cost price of this binder is particularly low, due to the small amount of casein required for a large amount of willow and the relatively very low cost price of this product.
The treatment of foundry sand in accordance with the prescriptions of the present invention can be carried out by any manual, automatic or semi-automatic means, it being understood that the most substantial installation however requires only a mixer and possibly dosers. appropriate.
