<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

IMPORT PATENT "IMPROVEMENTS TO VARIABLE STEP PROPELLERS"
It is known that in order to obtain an efficiency which is always close to the maximum of the propulsion propellers of aircraft, it is essential to be able to vary, during flight, the angle of inclination of the blades on their hub, so as to adapt the propeller to different flight regimes. to simplify the problem, we have been led to abandon the known devices, producing a continuous rotation of the blades and to determine, for these, two or more angular positions corresponding to given conditions, the blade being able to be stopped at one either of these positions, without the possibility of immobilization in an intermediate position.
The present invention addresses the problem of
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
rotation of the blades on their hub a satisfactory and feasible solution; has for object to this end, improvements to the so-called variable-pitch propellers, the pitch of which varies continuously or not.
These improvements consist, in principle and in the first place, in fixing each propeller blade to the hub by screwing onto a fixed sleeve provided with a sufficiently large pitch so that the action of the centrifugal force corresponding to a determined speed can overcome the passive resistances, friction, etc ... opposing the unscrewing of the blade, and automatically produce an angular displacement of the blades in the unscrewing direction.
Secondly, said improvements comprise an elastic member, spring, bungee cord, or other, acting in the opposite direction of the torque which tends to unscrew the blade, and capable, when for a low speed of rotation the centrifugal force has decreased to a certain value, to return the blade to any of the previous positions. Devices are provided to immobilize the blades in a certain number of these angular positions corresponding to various flight regimes, and in particular to the erasure of the propeller and its total stop.
The invention is, moreover, characterized by a certain number of constructive provisions which allow its realization, and the whole of which will be described below, by way of example, with reference to the appended drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 shows, seen from the front and parts in section, a variable-pitch blade attachment device
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
with automatic control and return established in accordance with the invention and comprising two extreme positions.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of this device.
Fig. 3 is an elevational view, parts in section, of a device similar to the preceding one and comprising several stop positions of the blades at different points of incidence.
Fig. 4 is a plan view of this device.
As can be seen in this drawing, a device for fixing blades, with variable pitch, established in accordance with the present invention, comprises a hub 1, provided in a suitable number of blade supports 2-3 threaded at 4, at a sufficient pitch. large so that, during flight, the action of the centrifugal force exerted in the direction of arrow F can overcome the resistances opposing the unscrewing of the blades 56 screwed on the supports 2-3 and produce a symmetrical unscrewing of the various blades 5-6, etc ... with a corresponding variation in the incidence of said blades. In the case of Figs. 1-2, the intended angular displacement is only a few degrees and has two extreme positions.
For this purpose, each blade 5-6 is locked on its pivot 2-3 by a pin or pin 7 integral with the blade root and passing through the pivot by means of oval holes 8-9 formed in said pivot with a lateral play determining the limits of angular displacement, and of the expected variation of incidence.
Each blade is subjected to the action of an antagonistic automatic return system consisting of a bungee cord 10, spring or any other elastic return system acting on the blade root 5-6 in the direction of screwing, in-
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
pours by the action of ± centrifugal force, by means of a fork II or any other adjustable fixing device or not, and a ball joint 12.
As soon as the angular speed of the propeller decreases sufficiently, the action ± of the centrifugal force also decreases, and the bungee cord 10 brings the corresponding blade back to the starting position (Fig. 2).
The invention provides a device for locking the propeller blades in each of the two positions determined above; this device could be any.
In the case shown, it consists of a sliding ring or sleeve 13, bearing in the first place, in a number equal to that of the blades, ball joints 14, in which are engaged, with gentle sliding, the free ends of the axes. 1, and secondly a plate 15 pierced at 16 and 17 directly or by an attached part, with housings capable of being engaged on fixed fingers 18-19, attached to the hub head 1. The plate 15 is constantly supported on the fingers 18-19 by elastic pushers 20-21 housed in each of the pin-pins 7, or mounted differently. The plate 15 can be controlled in the direction away from the fingers 18-19 by a roller fork 22-23 or any other control device.
The operation of the device described above is as follows:
On take-off or at rest, in the case of the lowest pitch, the bungee cords 10 keep each blade in the angular position shown (Fig. 2), and the assembly is locked in this position by the engagement of the plate 15. on the fingers 18-19. In the event of an increase
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
of the speed of rotation of the propeller, to increase the pitch of the latter by modifying the angular position of its blades on their pivots, the pilot simply has to push back the plate 15 by acting on the roller fork 22-23. The plate 15 being released from the fingers 18-19, and the assembly being unlocked, the action of the centrifugal force F unscrews each blade by the amount permitted by the play of the pins 1 in the oval holes 8-9.
The movement of the axes? is made, moreover, possible, by the play of the ball joints 14 in which they are engaged.
To return to the original position, it suffices, after having canceled the action of the rollers 22-23 on the plate 15, either to stop the propeller or to reduce its speed of rotation until the action bungee antagonist
10 on each of the blades is sufficient to produce a screwing of the latter, and their angular displacement in the opposite direction to the previous one produced by the centrifugal force.
This movement returns, via the pins 7, the plate 15 in the locking position where the holes 16-17, facing the fingers 18-19 engage on the latter under the action of the elastic pushers 20-21 , again locking the plate 15 and the blades in the initial position.
Figs. 3-4 represent an alternative embodiment by which various angular positions are provided for the blades of the propeller, and in particular, an extreme position in which these blades are erased with respect to the direction of advance and have the greatest possible resistance to rotation with zero tractive force.
In this variant, the blades are secured
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
as to their angular displacement, by a set of pinions of angles 24-25-26 and each of them or only one, as the case may be, comprises a ratchet wheel 27, each tooth of which determines a corresponding angular position of the blades of the propeller.
The ratchet wheels are immobilized in the usual way by ratchets 29, controlled by means of a roller fork, or otherwise, as has been said above, by means of the plate 15 and rods 28.
The operation of this device is similar to the previous one.
Figs. 3 and 4 are not limiting and the angle pinion can be replaced by any mating connection of the blades.
Each speed of rotation determines a predominance of the movement of the blade, either in the screwing direction or in the unscrewing direction, depending on whether the return spring outweighs the unscrewing torque or not.
It follows that the movement is obtained in one direction or the other by varying the speed of rotation of the propeller and by acting on the ratchet wheel which controls the blades.
The above arrangements are, of course, given only by way of example, the shapes, materials and dimensions of the constituent members, as well as the detailed arrangements, can be modified without harming the principle of the invention.
