<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

"NEW HAIRY FABRICATES AND PROCESS AND DEVICES USING
TO THEIR MANUFACTURING. "
The present invention, - relating to hairy fabrics such as rugs and rugs, - relates to new or improved fabrics in which the tufts of pile, or flocks, are formed by inserting the ends lined with lengths of threads folded, in an elastic base, and are attached to this base by applying a fastening material to the dorsal face of the Doilue base thus formed.
Preferably the base is made entirely or mainly of rubber, the attachment of the tufts or flocks

dirty rubber forming the! based.
The fabric is preferably produced in two stages, the first of which is carried out in a machine which cuts and doubles the lengths of threads and inserts them into the elastic base, so that the doubled ends, or folded in half, form evenly. protruding from the dorsal face of the base, and are tightened and retained by the contraction of the base material, while the final attachment is made in a second step and preferably after removal of the hairy fabric from the machine.
A non-limiting example of the embodiment of the object of the present invention is described in what follows and shown in the accompanying drawing, for the case of a carpet, @
In the accompanying drawing, Figures 1 to 4 show the characteristic part of the machine, partially in section, and the figures. 5 to 9 larger scale cuts in the fabrication, at different times during fabrication.
Referring first to Figures 5 to 9, the mat is provided with a rubber base a, covered with a thick fabric al, According to Figure 5 this base is held on a perforated member m and is perforated by a punch b. FIG. 6 represents a length of extracted and cut wire c which (after the withdrawal of the punch) is held with its middle part above the perforation a2. A punch d (see figure 7) then doubles the length of wire, or folds it in half and (after it is released by the extractors) forces it through the perforation until the doubled end is protrusion on the dorsal side of the base. When the punch d is withdrawn, the tuft, or flock, e is tightened by the contraction of the rubber (see figure 8) and is firmly retained during the final fixation.
According to the example shown in FIG. 9, the final fixing of the tufts or flocks is carried out by applying a coating f made of rubber, or a rubber solution, or a

hairy cat, or trimmed with flocks ,; and by vulcanization under pressure, so as to crush the ends e1 and thus to cause attachment of the tufts, or flocks, by the vulcanized rubber. A textile back cover g (Figure 9) can be applied to the rubber f and be attached to it by vulcanization.
The first step in the manufacture of a carpet according to the present invention can be carried out by means of a machine as shown in Figures 1 to 4.
This machine comprises a support rail m, provided with a row of perforations m1, the number and mutual distance of which correspond to those of the tufts, or flocks, which we want to have in each row of tufts, or flocks. It also includes a series of needles -drills b and punches d doubling and ------ planting the tufts, or flocks.
A yarn holder n (which can be controlled by a Jacquard mechanism in case of a wachine intended to produce designs) is arranged behind the needles and punches, and a shearing device o is situated in front of the yarn holder, in order to cut the lengths of wire drawn from the wire support by the pins - extractors p and extractors p are mounted on a carriage moving in reciprocating direction above the support rail and are controlled by oames causing them to open and close .
Each extractor is mounted on a shaft g, so as to be able to perform an oscillating movement relative to the railsupport m, and comprises a lower jaw p1 and an upper maahoire p2 which is pivoted at p1. The oscillation of the extractors towards the support rail is obtained by means of an extension p3 on each of the jaws p1, this extension engaging in a groove-shaped cam p4, p5, provided in a plate cam p6, while opening and closing are caused by a spring p7 and a cam q2.
The q2 tails can be supported by the shaft g and be arranged so that
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
(see figure 2), in order to retain the latter in the clamping position, while the disengagement of the cams from the extensions of the jaws can be reversed by a lateral displacement of the shaft g, in order to allow the springs p7 to open the jaws p2. The cams close the jaws, with compression of the springs, during the return movement of the shaft q. According to an alternative embodiment, a shaft similar to g can communicate angular movements to the cams, with the aim of alternately closing and releasing the jaws p2.
A lying comb is placed under the jaws and is normally held in contact with a stopper al, but it can be mounted on a hinge at its, in order to facilitate the introduction and advancement of the sections of the base material towards the roller. drive t. The comb s, the support rail m and the cam plates p6 are adjustable so that they can be moved closer and further from the shearing device ±, so that the work of the machine can be adjusted for different lengths of threads.
Figure 1 shows the positions of the members after establishment of a row of perforations by the needles b and closing of the extractors which have seized the threads presented to them by the thread support n. Then the extractors pull the wires from the support n and the extensions p3 of the jaws travel in the straight part p4 of the cams while the jaws p2 are kept closed by the cams q2, as shown in figure 2. After extracting the wires, the lengths of wires are cut by the shearing device o and the path of the extractors continues, the extensions p3 rising due to the inclined part p5 of the cams and consequently causing an angular lowering of the extractors so that the lengths of wires are dosed by their midpoint in the perforations established in the base material.
Then the extractors stop and the shaft g is operated
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
As a result, the latter are opened by their springs and release the lengths of threads (see figure 3) which are then doubled or gone in two and driven in with their end doubled or tied in two, by the punches d through the perforations. .
Then the punches are removed, the tufts, or flocks, are clamped by the elastic base and the workpiece is advanced by the value of the last implanted row of tufts, or flocks. The next cycle of machine operations is then started with the actuation of the perforating needles, followed by the lifting of the extractors by the p5 cams, the advancement of the extractors towards the thread support and the actuation of the cams. q2 causing the gripping, by the jaws p2, of the ends of the son presented by the son support.
