<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

"IMPROVEMENTS TO COOKING AND COOLING FACILITIES FOR CANNED ARTICLES.
The object of the present invention is to establish improved means for transporting containers containing food products through cooking and / or cooling installations, with a view to subjecting these products to cooking and / or cooling for the longest time. period of time possible and while giving them a continuous movement from the entry to the exit of an apparatus of any size, the bundles of.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
being kept constantly in a substantially vertical position and being free from jolts during their passage through the apparatus.
The improved device for transporting cans of cans according to the invention consists of one or more series of four vertical shafts, each of which carries several castor wheels. In addition. this device comprises an endless chain whose strands go back and forth between the catwheels carried by a pair of vertical shafts, cepe @ dsnt that the chain goes up to the upper ends of the latter, after which the cat rolls on the second pair of vertical trees where its strands come and go) between the chain wheels mounted on these trees, while the cat goes down to arrive at the lower ends of the said trees, from where it returns to the first pair of vertical trees, or,
goes to one or more other series of four trees arranged in the same way as the previous ones, to finally return to the pair of trees mentioned first.
The invention further consists in placing the series or series of four vertical shafts on a carriage and in providing guides for the containers transported by the endless chain, said carriage being mounted on wheels so as to be able to be introduced into, or withdrawn from the cooking or cooling installation and, once placed inside the latter, be arranged so that one of said shafts can be connected to drive means.
The invention further consists in providing an arrangement according to which the containers are supported by trays fixed to the chain, said trays moving overlapping on fixed guides acting in a hand-held manner.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
hold said receptacles on the trays during the transport of these receptacles through the machine.
In the accompanying explanatory drawings:
Fig. 1 is a sectional elevation view, and FIG. 2 a plan view of a cooking or cooling apparatus comprising means for transporting the containers of preserves through the apparatus, these means being established according to a suitable embodiment of the present invention, the chain itself being omitted in this Fig for clarity.
Fig. 3 and 4 are detail views, respectively in section and in plan, these views being drawn up on a larger scale and showing an appropriate embodiment of the support and guide means for the containers *
Fig. 5 is a schematic view showing the path followed by the chain in transporting said containers through the cooking or cooling apparatus shown in the drawing.
Fig. 6 and 7 are elevation and plan views, respectively, showing the means for adjusting the chain tension.
The means for transporting the containers are constituted by an endless chain a (FIG. 1) passing on chain wheels 11 mounted on four vertical shafts c, d, e and f. It will be seen that the chain goes back and forth first between the chain wheels mounted on shafts g, and d, going up from the wheel situated lowest on shaft c, to the wheel situated highest on shaft c. the shaft d, from where the chain passes to the wheel located highest on the shaft e, to then go back and forth between the chain wheels mounted on the

wire and z shafts, from thisDiai1t. to. at. the chain wheel located
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
lower, on shaft f, from where said chain returns again to, the wheel located lowest on shaft c.
It is therefore seen that the chain has a great length in a space of relatively short length, so that the boxes supported by the chain can be subjected for a relatively prolonged period to baking or cooling by passing through an apparatus. space-saving cooking or cooling.
As shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the chain links a support plates g riveted to the latter and intended to support the boxes h between the guide plates i arranged on two opposite sides of the chain and the plates g over the entire length of the path of these elements inside the machine. In addition, the guides i support the plates g independently of the chain a, the sagging of which is thus prevented. The guides i are clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2, together with the vertical shafts c, d, c and ± on which the chain wheels h are mounted.
Figs. 6 and 7 show a suitable arrangement of means for adjusting the tension of the chain a. It can be seen that the part of each of the two shafts d, e, on which the chain wheels are mounted., Is eccentric with respect to the ends d1 and c1 of these shafts, which ends are mounted in suitable bearings. The upper end of each shaft d and e carries a crank arm j, the two crank arms being coupled by means of rods k provided respectively with right and left threads intended to receive a nut m also provided with right and left threads. las axial displacements of this nut being prevented by the flanges n, n.
It is easy to see that by rotating
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
the nut a, it is possible to modify the spacing of the parts of the shafts d, e which carry the chain wheels h, thus making it possible to lengthen or shorten the path of the chain,
The shafts c, d, e and f are mounted in bearings provided in a frame mounted on the wheels o, the frame and the wheels thus forming a carriage, so that the members ensuring the advancement of the boxes can be transported on wheels as a single assembly or trolley, with a view to being introduced into or removed from the interior of the cooking or cooling apparatus p, which is provided at one end with a removable door or shutter plate q.
When the carriage occupies the appropriate position in the body p, its wheels o are supported and immobilized by means of stops r, of which those placed at the inner end of the body p are placed on both sides of the wheels, so to prevent forward or backward movements of the carriage. As soon as the carriage occupies its exact location, a drive element can be lowered through the wall of the body, until it engages the upper end of one of the shafts c, d, e or f. In the case where the cooking or cooling apparatus is of the pressure type, the drive shaft passes through a stuffing box.
When the cooking or cooling appliance is of the atmospheric type, the boxes can be placed on the conveyor chain or removed from it through the upper part of the box p. If the cooking or cooling device is of the pressure type, the advancing and removing means comprise a valve of suitable construction.
By considering the drawings, we will see that the boxes can travel a long way in a device very little
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
cumbersome consisting of a combination of a tram-carrier chain with guides, the pairs of shafts c, f and ¯ ± e being very close to one another, so that all the interior space of the body p is actually used.
It will be noted that the advancement members are established to receive boxes of different diameters, without requiring any adjustment or modifications.
The number of chain wheels h mounted on shafts c, d, a and f. can vary to adapt to the maximum height of the boxes to be transported by the advancement chain.
