<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

"Manufacturing process for seamless chains"
It is known to manufacture the links of the chains without welding, consisting of two eyelets perpendicular to each other, starting from metal in yards. To this end, the ends of these metal rods are shaped in several phases in the form of "half-eyelets" (rings whose cross-section is semicircular) and the middle part connecting the half-ends is folded in a circle. - eyelets of the part, so as to juxtapose the flat faces of the two half-eyelets. These two half-eyelets then together constitute one of the eyelets of the chain link and the middle part folded in a circle constitutes the other eyelet of the link.
After making the first link of the chain in this way, thread through one of these eyelets.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
of this purchased link is the metal rod intended to constitute the next link and only then is the ends of this part shaped into half-eyelets and the second chain link is completed by folding its middle part in a circle. Then we thread a new rod in the free eyelet of the second link to transform it into a link, and so on.
Until now, the shaping of the half-eyelets has represented the greatest difficulty in this process of manufacturing chains, because the shaping operation required a considerable deformation of the metal rod and because care had to be taken to 'finish the carnations in one heat.
According to a known process, the ends of the metal rod were first widened and split on both sides with wedges; then a widening mandrel was driven into the split parts and the blanks thus obtained were transformed into half-eyes by shaping them in dies.
This procedure significantly weakens the texture of the ends of the metal rod and inevitably cracks are produced when driving the expander mandrel.
The present invention relates to a method consisting in producing in the ends of the metal rod, by driving a wedge-shaped tool, an elongated and deep notch. The metal of the part is thus pushed back on either side of the longitudinal sides of the tool in a very favorable manner for subsequent shaping and without harming the texture of the material. Furthermore, it is advisable to reinforce the ends of the part by pushing back material before or after the notching operation and to flatten them if necessary after having reinforced them, so that the ends of the piece of material in sufficient quantity and well distributed.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
It is also possible to notch the ends of the part after having bent them into a semicircle, a quarter of a circle or in a similar manner.
The pocket-shaped bottom of the notch produced by the cutting operation is then drilled with a special tool. The resulting waste of material is insignificant. On the other hand, the important result is obtained that by this means there is no deterioration of the material and that the process can be carried out quickly and safely.
Other characteristics of the process will emerge from the description of two exemplary embodiments shown in the accompanying drawings. Figs. 1 to 12 show the first and Figs. 13 to 27 show the second embodiment.
In the first example of execution, we first bend in a U, as shown in Fig. There, the originally rectilinear round penis. Then, after having threaded the part through one of the eyes of a finished chain link, the material is pushed back longitudinally from the ends 1 of the U-shaped part which protrude from the middle part 2, so as to obtain the form shown in FIG. 2. Then bend at a right angle outward, as shown in FIG. 3, the reinforced ends 1.
Then, by means of wedge-shaped tools 3, one of the angles of which is cut obliquely and which are mounted in a press plunger not shown in the drawing, deep notches are produced in the ends 1 along the longitudinal axis thereof, as shown in elevation, in cross section and in plan respectively in Figs. 4, 5 and 6; this operation maintains the part in a matrix of suitable shape, preferably prismatic, which is not shown in the drawing either.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
Indeed, by arranging the part, bent in its middle part 2 and bent at its ends as shown in FIG. 3, on an anvil comprising a prismatic groove for the middle part 2 and for the ends 1, any rotation of the part is prevented and at the same time the desired position is secured with respect to the scoring tool 3.
As a result of the wedge shape of the tool 3 shown from the front in FIG. 5, this tool pushes back on either side the two halves and 1 "of the ends 1 and pushes outward a film of material 4 in the form of a pocket. However, this pocket 4 still remains integral with the two halves. separated the and 1 ".
Then, as shown in Figs. 7, 8 and 9, the notched ends 1 are further folded, so that on the one hand the material pocket 4 curves in an arc, but on the other hand it also helps to move further apart from each other the two halves separated 1 "and 1", beyond the distance previously produced by the scoring tool 3. The pockets of material 4 are completely detached and the two halves of the ends are further separated by means of of wedge-shaped punches 5 provided with projections 6.
The part then has a shape such that it is possible to shape its split ends in dies 7 (Fig. 10) to give them the shape of flat half-eyelets 8, so that the part takes on the appearance shown with a view to side in Fig. 10 and shown in plan in FIG. 11.
This part is then placed between the two jaws 9 (Fig. 12) which can be rotated towards each other on a pivot 10, so that the middle part 2 of the part bends in the form of a chain link eyelets, while @
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
the two half-eyelets 8 move towards each other until they are in close contact and thus form the other eyelet.
Oven fold the middle part 2, under the pressure exerted by the jaws 9 in the plane of the annular eyelets, in such a way that the eyelet formed by folding the middle part is strictly circular, it is possible to apply on the part median 2, on either side, transverse mandrels arranged exactly in the middle of this part, that is to say at the place where it bears against the eyelet of the link already completed previously. The ends of these two mandrels, which bear against each other above the middle part of the link to be completed, have notches which leave room for that of the eyelets of the completed link in which the middle part is threaded. 2. The set of two mandrels thus constitutes a template around which the middle part of the part is folded.
However, it should be observed that when the two jaws 9 approach each other symmetrically, the two bending mandrels, whose axes are perpendicular to the path of the jaws 9, must move in a straight line, vertically downwards. of Fig. 12, in the plane of symmetry between the two jaws. For this purpose the two mandrels must be supported in such a way that they can perform this rectilinear movement during the bending of the middle part, and in addition it is advisable to use a guide to make this rectilinear downward movement of the mandrels positive. . This also increases the precision of the bending and the coincidence of the two half-eyelets.
When the machine is constructed so that one of the two jaws 9 is fixed and only the other is @
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
mobile, the two bending mandrels must be guided not in a straight line but following a well-defined curve.
The procedure of first bending the pieces only to the extent shown in FIG. 3 or, despite the upsetting of material, the ends of the part still have a circular cross section and are rectilinear and parallel to the middle part 2, and not to bend them further until after having notched them, as shown in Fig. 7, is chosen because the part according to FIG. 3 can be maintained by simple means in the desired position relative to the scoring tools.
In fact, it is then sufficient, as has already been said above, to use an anvil comprising prismatic grooves for the middle part 2 and for the rectilinear ends, since these prismatic grooves ensure the symmetrical position with respect to the cutting tools and furthermore prevent any rotation of the part around the longitudinal axis of the middle part.
In the exemplary embodiment shown in Figs. 13 to 27, we also start with a round rod (Fig. 13). As shown in side view and in cross section respectively in Figs. 14 and 15, we first bend this rod slightly in the middle and we flatten it at its ends. In this form, the part can be threaded through the chain link completed last. The material is then pushed back from the flattened ends 11 of the part, between two surfaces moving towards each other, by means of stamps 12 which act axially on the part, and during this operation the ends are removed. - widen even more as shown respectively in side view, in cross section and in plan in Figs. 16, 17 and 18.
By a suitable conformation of the tools we can give an oval shape to the ends of the part.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
Then, as shown respectively in side view and in cross section in Figs. 19 and 20, an elongated wedge-shaped tool 13 is driven into the ends 11 of the part, on the side of one of their flat faces, so as to produce a notch 14, the bottom 15 of which has the shape of a pocket. As a result of the depression of this tool 13, the ends 11 are widened even further.
Jesuit, as shown in side view, in cross section and in plan respectively in Figs. 21, 22 and 23, the pocket-shaped bottom 15 of the notch 14 is pierced by means of a punch 16 of elongated cross section.
In doing so, the ends 11 are given the shape of oval annular blanks which are pressed by means of a stamp 17, as shown respectively in side view and in plan in Figs. 24 and 25, until they have taken the drular form. Then the ends 11, which then have the shape of circular rings, undergo a shaping in a die to receive their final shape shown in side view in FIG. 26 and shown in plan in FIG. 27. The folding of the part in the form of a completed chain link is then operated in a manner analogous to that described in the first exemplary embodiment.
It is also possible to detach the pocket of material produced by the notching, by means of tools which act in the opposite direction to the tool which produced the notches.
