<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

Draft regulator for fireplaces.
The invention relates to a device for obtaining a uniform draft in the chimneys of locomotives and similar machines, comprising two superimposed propellers with blades which can rotate freely in the opposite direction under the action of the flow of exhaust steam and fumes. An attempt has been made to give all of these components an arrangement which minimizes as far as possible the harmful effects which the presence of foreign bodies inside the chimney would have on the outlet of the fumes.
According to the invention, the main bearings in which the shafts of the two propellers rotate are arranged above the latter or their blades, the frame of the main bearings extending beyond the upper edge of the chimney. The bearings are therefore ventilated by a natural effect, while they would be subject to the effects of the heat of the exhaust gases if they were fitted inside the chimney, the cooling having to be provided in such a case exclusively by lubricating oil.
But since the two propellers with three blades must be relatively spaced 1, 'one from the other so that between them the eddy

is uniform and as their blades rotate at high speed, the relatively long shaft which carries the lower propeller transmits considerable forces to the upper bearing and vibrations. To avoid these drawbacks, according to the invention, an additional bearing has been added above the lower propeller.
With an arrangement of this kind regulating the draft of the hearth and avoiding the projection of sparks, it is especially advisable in the case of locomotives to establish the section of the exhaust pipe according to the power of the propeller and according to the new conditions created by the arrangement of the propeller inside the chimney. It therefore becomes essential, according to the invention, to reduce the section of the chimney in the vicinity of the opening of the exhaust nozzle, by introducing therein an appropriate annular element.
In the accompanying drawings, given by way of example, one form of execution of the present invention is shown, and in this drawing FIG. 1 shows, in longitudinal section, the arrangement of the elements of the system; Fig. 2 shows the ring introduced into the exhaust nozzle.
The lower propeller 1 is mounted on the shaft 2, the upper propeller 3 on the hollow shaft 4 rolling in ball bearings 5 and 6 established in the housing 7. The shaft 2 rotates in the upper and lower bearings 8 and 9, the second of which is housed in the boot 11 supported by the walls of the chimney by means of the rods 10. A protective sheath 12 is fixed to the boot 11 for prevent the droplets of oil intended for lubricating the bearing 9 from being projected and clogging the part between shafts 2 and 4. The lubricating oil is introduced at 13. The oil pump can be adjusted so as to introduce a high specific heat oil, in sufficient quantity, to lubricate the upper bearings 8, 6 and 5 and the lower bearing 9 located on the channel 14.
In the mouth of the exhaust nozzle 15, a ring 16 has been introduced reducing the passage section thus increasing, all other things being equal, the exhaust speed of the valve.

can and accentuating the vacuum 0 The flow of exhaust steam sets the propellers in opposite direction at a speed depending on the value of their pitch. For their part, the propellers generate in the space between them an air mattress regulating the draft and imparting to the whole of the gas column a vortex rotation converging towards the hearth.
This results in a more intimate mixture of the fuel with the oxygen in the combustion air, further accentuated by the greater difference in pressure determined by the intermediate ring on the draft path; the intensity of combustion in the hearth is thereby increased. Incandescent particles torn from the hearth and having a specific weight greater than that of gas and vapor, are entrained by the rotation towards the walls of the chimney, by virtue of the law 0 = Mr and 1 'reach before the gas column has succeeded. They fall into the ashtray in the consumed state and can no longer go out through the chimney.
