<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

"Improvements to blown mechanical grilles".
In installations heated with coke fed by means of a blown mechanical grate, in order to ignite the fresh coke, it is necessary to partially close the smoke register, in order to put the combustion chamber under pressure and to cause ignition by gas return.
This procedure gives rise to the release of deleterious gases in the boiler room.
The object of the present invention is to obviate this drawback. It consists in placing at the front part of the blown mechanical grid, that is to say below the fuel supply hopper, a casing of suction connected to the chimney flue of the installation, to a

auxiliary fan or to the fan blowing from the grate, this box being intended to create in the combustion chamber, a slight depression producing a return of the hot gases which ensure the ignition of the fuel carried by the grate and are evacuated to the outside.
The accompanying drawing shows, by way of example, an embodiment of the device in question.
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of the box forming the subject of the present invention.
FIG. 2 is a sectional view of a hearth supplied by a blown grille provided with the box according to the invention.
Figure 3 is a sectional view along the line A-B of Figure 2.
The box shown in Figure 1 comprises a main chamber 1, the bottom 2 of which is hinged for possible cleaning, and the end 1 'is extended by a duct 3. The upper wall of the chamber 1 is pierced with openings 4, of increasing dimensions from left to right, considering figure 1 and opening into compartments provided with corresponding openings 5.
The boxes thus produced are placed at the front part of the grid on the frame of the latter (Figures 2 and 3).
As the duct 3 is connected, as explained above, either to the flue of the chimney, or to an auxiliary vacuum cleaner, or to the vacuum cleaner blowing the grate, it can be understood that a vacuum will be created in the combustion chamber and that the hot gases sucked in will pass through the coke carried by the grate and through the openings 6 and 4, will exit outside through the duct 3. On their passage through the combustion layer, these hot gases will cause it to ignite.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
It should be noted that as a result of the increasing dimensions of the openings 4 of the box, a uniform suction is achieved over the entire length of the box,
It goes without saying that the duct 3 can, at will, be isolated from the suction or placed in communication with the latter, using any suitable device.
The suction box which is the subject of the invention has the following advantages:
1 - No release of gas in the boiler rooms.
2 - Suppression of dust entrained in the atmosphere
3 - Elimination of ventilation devices intended to renew the air.
4 - Economy of driving force.
5 - Possibility, if the blower fan stops, to operate the boilers at idle speed.
6 - Increase in combustion rate.
It is understood that the embodiment described above is in no way limiting and may receive any desirable constructive modifications without thereby departing from the scope of the invention.
