<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

Apparatus for the complete use of fuels in fire-tube boilers or the like.
The present invention relates to an apparatus for the complete use of fuels in fire-tube boilers or the like, this apparatus advantageously differing from known devices in its shape, arrangement and construction in general.
It is not new to provide homes with air ducts intended to bring fresh air to the combustion gases; to do this, for example air channels constituting an independent part are placed in a compartment of the firebox, this compartment being separated from the filling chamber by a partition made of refractory material; these air pipes are then covered with a screen. However, this arrangement has not proved to be advantageous since a lack of care when cleaning the firebox can easily cause deterioration of said screen which, therefore, can no longer fill. its functions.
As a result, the pipes constituting a

independent assembly are now exposed to the destructive influences of heat or to an obstruction by fly ash or even to deterioration occurring during the cleaning of the firebox. Thus, their operation will be compromised.
Another drawback of the known devices lies in the fact that said pipes forming an independent assembly are supplied with air only by the quantity of air which remains at the front part of the combustion chamber. The volume of air remaining there is quite low and therefore cannot be considered as fresh air; in addition, the air intake cannot be adjusted according to the requirements of the service.
The disadvantages inherent in known types are eliminated by the object of the present invention; in accordance with this, there is placed, behind the altar of the combustion chamber, an apparatus consisting of a piece of refractory clay and which receives the atmospheric air through a suitable duct leading to a bore made in the said apparatus.
The air flow entering it is slowed down inside the device by baffle walls, which results in heating this cool air passing over the hot interior walls of the device; then, the air thus heated passes through the small outlet openings arranged over the entire width of the appliance, and penetrates, following the direction of the draft, into the hearth tube, so that the unburnt gases which escape, can be burned immediately without a drop in temperature.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the object of the invention.
Fig.l is a longitudinal section of a single-hearth tube boiler, with the new apparatus according to the invention disposed at the rear part of the altar.
Fig.2 shows the rear part of said device where the small outlet openings are arranged.

Fig.3 is a cross section of the device along line A-B of fig. 2.
According to the invention, the apparatus c consists of refractory clay; inside the device c. a space c 'is provided with baffle partitions h arranged alternately to the right and to the left. At the lower part of the apparatus c is made a bore e communicating with the space c ', while at the upper part are provided small exhaust openings d (see fig.3); the appliance c is mounted behind the altar b of the combustion chamber of the boiler a, for example with a fire tube, and this in such a way that the small exhaust openings d are located towards the rear, therefore in the direction of the combustion gases.
The large bore e of the apparatus ± receives the pipe f terminating in atmospheric air which can then reach the apparatus c and enter the interior part c 'thereof. The speed of this fresh air stream is slowed down by the baffle partitions h so that the air heats up strongly there to escape slowly through the small openings d and then mix with the unburned gases. ; this results in total combustion of these. At the front end of the ballast pipe there is an adjustment valve g (see fig.l) which makes it possible to adjust both the speed and the volume of the air.
