" MACHINE A COUDRE A POINT NOUE "
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

Fig. 8 est une vue analogue à fig.
Fig. 9 est une coupe suivant'9-9 (fig. 8).
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
goupille 52 .
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>
<Desc/Clms Page number 12>

"TIE-POINT SEWING MACHINE"
This invention relates to sewing machines and more particularly relates to lockstitch sewing machines of the type comprising an up and down needle bar, a reciprocating work drive mechanism and a reciprocating mechanism. additional sewing machine .-
According to the invention the machine comprises two parallel shafts, arranged respectively above and below the machine table, the first of which, the motor shaft drives the second by means of gears, a device being provided at the end of the motor shaft remote from its control pulley, allowing it to transmit an up and down movement to the needle bar, and devices,
cooperating with the end of the controlled shaft remote from its control gear respectively actuate the drive mechanism of the work and the complementary sewing mechanism.
This arrangement makes it possible to minimize
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
the weight of the metal moving back and forth, which decreases vibrations and makes the machine capable of working at a higher speed and with less wear than the machines established to date.
Other advantages and features of the invention will emerge from the description which will be given with reference to the appended drawings, given by way of example, in which:

Fig. 8 is a view similar to FIG. 1 but on a smaller scale and represents another way of controlling the movements of the feed dog.
Fig. 9 is a section on '9-9 (fig. 8).
The machine shown in the drawings comprises a needle bar carrying a needle and a rotary hook which co-operates with the needle to lay the needle thread around the thread spool for the purpose of making lockstitches. The needle bar is mounted in a cantilever arm and receives a reciprocating movement from a rotating shaft carrying a crank connected directly by a link to the needle bar, the latter thus deriving its movement from the end. motor shaft away from the belt transmission pulley attached to this shaft.
The rotary hook continuously receives a rotary movement from an auxiliary shaft which carries a toothed wheel at. grating with a toothed wheel mounted on a controlled shaft located below the machine table and these toothed wheels are in such a ratio that the rotary hook performs two rotational movements with each rotation of the controlled shaft . This controlled shaft located below the table is connected by means of a gear train to the motor shaft which communicates its reciprocating motion to the needle bar. The axis of the auxiliary shaft carrying the rotary hook is located in a vertical plane which contains the path of the needle and which is perpendicular to the drive line.
The axis of the controlled shaft actuating the rotary hook is located behind the axis of the auxiliary shaft. The fabric is fed by the claw carried by the swivel feed bar on a feed beam, and the feed bar receives a
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
raising and lowering movement using a link connected to a crank pin provided at. the end of the controlled shaft. The lower end of this link is connected to a member carried by the drive bar and extending downwards, so that the raising and lowering movement communicated to said bar by this link link with the said crankpin of the ordered tree is positive.
The drive balance receives an oscillating movement by means of an eccentric carried by this controlled shaft. The wires are raised and the point is adjusted by a lifting device which is actuated by the same crank as the action. . nant the needle bar, so that this device is positively actuated in its reciprocating movements.
The rotary hook and the drive mechanism derive their movements from the end of the auxiliary shaft remote from its control gear.
Reference will now be made to the drawings. The machine comprises a support frame 1 constituting the opening plate of the machine. This frame is provided with lower ribs 2,2 which are spaced from the edge of the plate so that the latter can rest by its marginal parts on the support table. From the support frame 1 rises a column provided with a cantilever arm 4 in which a bar 5 carrying a needle µ is mounted to receive an up-and-down movement.
Inside the cantilever arm .1 is further supported a rotary shaft 1 carrying a crank plate 8 whose crank pin 9 is connected by a link 10 to one. lug 11 carried by a collar 12 fixed to the needle bar, In the present embodiment of the invention the shaft 7 is the motor shaft of the
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
machine and receives its movement from a transmission pulley 7a directly attached to said shaft. The shaft is mounted in bearings 13,13, one of which is located at the end of the cantilever arm carrying the needle bar and the other mounted in the rear wall of the column.
The bearings 13 are supplied with oil, one through a conduit 14 of the arm, the other through holes made in the column.
A rotary hook 19 cooperates with the needle below the work holder. This rotary hook 19 is fixed to an auxiliary rotary shaft 20 and contains the usual bobbin or spool 21 carrying one of the threads. The hook 19 enters the loop of needle thread and passes this thread around the spool in the usual manner to form a lockstitch. The hook and the coil have only been shown schematically and can be of any type desired. However, they are preferably of the type in which the rotary hook makes two rotations for each up-and-down movement of the needle so as to facilitate the raising of the threads, the adjustment of the stitch and the dragging. fabric.
The shaft 20 is mounted in a lower boss 22 of the frame 1. Lubricating oil can be supplied to the bearings of this shaft through an oil hole 23 opening through the work plate. On the right end of the shaft 20 is mounted a toothed wheel 24 which meshes with a toothed wheel 25 carried by a control shaft 26. The toothed wheels 24 and 25 are proportioned so that the rotary hook receives two rotational movements for one rotation of the shaft 26. The shaft 26 pivots in bearings 27 and 28 supported by the frame 1 of the machine.
At the right end of boss 22 is
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
a housing 29 integral with this boss and extending to the front of the toothed wheel 24 and to the rear of the toothed wheel 25. The shaft 26 passes through this housing and oil retaining pads 30, 30 are provided to close the opening in the wall of the housing for the passage of the shaft 26. The housing 29 is an integral part of the frame 1, so that the frame closes the upper side of this housing. A removable plate 31 is connected to the lower side of the housing by a liquid-tight assembly and thus a chamber is obtained for containing the lubricating oil.
The oil can be introduced into this chamber through an opening 33 which can be closed in any well known manner. Thanks to this arrangement, it is certain that the toothed wheels 24 and 25 will rotate in an oil bath and will thus be perfectly lubricated and substantially silent. These wheels are preferably made of a material which contributes to their quiet operation, even at high speeds.
The shaft 26 passes through the bearing-28 to enter the column inside which it carries a toothed wheel 34. This wheel meshes with the toothed wheel 15 which itself meshes with a toothed wheel 16 fixed to the shaft. main control. The wheel 15 is a transmission wheel comprising a hub 15 'inside which is mounted a removable bearing 15' ', so that this wheel rotates around a fixed pivot 17' mounted in the walls of the column. .
The pivot 17 has an oil duct 17 'through which lubricant is supplied to the bearing on which the hub of the wheel 15 is mounted, collars 17 "holding this wheel in place on its pivot. The column is provided with extensions. to which is detachably attached a plate 35 which constitutes a chamber 36 at the lower part.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
top of this column. This chamber is supplied with lubricating oil, so that the toothed wheel 34 rotates in an oil bath and transfers the lubricant to the wheels 15 and 16 to lubricate their teeth. The wheel 15 is larger than either of the wheels 16, 34. However, the latter two have the same diameter and it follows that they are operated at the same speed.
By giving the transmission gear 15 a number of teeth which is not a multiple of that of the wheels with which it meshes, preferably by the addition of a periodically varying tooth, a displaced meshing can be obtained. gradually and such as one of the teeth which is subject to special fatigue due, for example, to the penetration of the tissue by the needle or to the raising of the feed dog, whether this tooth belongs to the wheel 16 or at the wheel 34, successively comes into contact with a different tooth of the transmission wheel.
This in itself reduces wear, but an even more efficient distribution of wear can be obtained by choosing a softer material for the toothing of the transmission wheel than that of which the teeth of the other wheels are made, for example. example bakelite, which attracts wear to those teeth which have only intermittent contact with a tooth subjected to special fatigue.
These gears are preferably made of a material such that they are substantially silent even when operated at high speed.
The fabric is held on the table by a presser foot 37 which is mounted in the needle head and biased downward by a spring 38. The tension of this spring can be varied by means of an adjustable stop collar 39.
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
The presser foot is lifted away from the fabric using a lever 40. These parts are of the usual construction.
The fabric is driven across the table by a drive claw 41 carried by a drive bar. The bar 42 pivots on a drive beam 44) itself mounted on a shaft 45 supported by legs 46, 46 extending downward from the frame. The drive bar carries an arm 47 which extends downward and pivots at 48 on a link-49. At its upper end, this rod 49 is connected to a crank pin 50 mounted eccentrically in the end of the control shaft 26 and fixed in this end by a locking screw 51.
It will be noted that the shaft 26 ends just beyond the bearing 27 and that the end of the shaft carrying the crankpin is therefore supported in a very firm and durable manner. As the shaft 26 rotates, it positively effects the raising and lowering of the claw via the link 49, which has the effect of bringing it into engagement and out of engagement with the tissue and also has the effect of lifting the material with the presser foot so as to eliminate the clamping action of this foot on the fabric for its drive.
The drive beam 44 terminates slightly below the bearing 46 and is provided with a pin 52 extending laterally. The drive shaft 26 carries an eccentric 53. An eccentric collar made up of two telescopic sections 54 and 55 constitutes the control device provided to oscillate the driving balance 44.
Section 54 is pivotally connected to the above

pin 52. As the eccentric 53 rotates it communicates to section * 5¯4 a reciprocating motion in section 55 without imparting any longitudinal movement to this section 55 of the eccentric collar. However, the lateral movements imparted to the eccentric collar by the eccentric 53 cause the section 55 to change its angular position relative to the driving beam 44. The free end of section 55 of the eccentric collar has a projection 576 with a pin 57.
A link 58 connects this pin 57 to a pin 59 carried by an arm 60 which is capable of being brought to different adjustment positions and remains in a fixed position during the normal operation of the drive device.
We will now refer to the schematic view of fig 7. It can be seen that the eccentric collar receives a lateral movement from the position indicated by the solid line a to the solid line b., During this lateral movement of the eccentric collar, the link 58 oscillates around the center e from the position marked in solid lines e to the position marked in solid lines d. It can be seen that the end of the rod moves from position f to position g when the center of oscillation e occupies the position indicated by the solid lines in fig.
7. When the connection with the telescopic part of the eccentric collar passes from point f to point g, this section and the driving balance connected to it necessarily receive a horizontal movement, the amplitude of which is determined by the distance between the vertical lines passing through the dots! and g, which distance is the stitch length or the fabric feed distance. If point e is
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
brought to the point and the link will move from point f 'to point g' and it is seen that the section 55 of the eccentric collar performs only a small or no effective horizontal or longitudinal movement and that, therefore, the feed dog receives little or no movement.
If the aforesaid center of oscillation is brought to a point e2, that is to say below the eccentric collar, the drive will be reversed since the point f is closer to the eccentric than is point g,
When the connecting rod occupies the position marked in solid lines and is at the point indicated at f in fig. 7, the drive beam occupies the position in solid lines indicated in h, and when the rod comes to the position indicated in g, the drive arm is in the position indicated in 1. When adjusting the center of oscillation e to bring it to the position indicated in and in fig. 7, the driving beam moves from position h 'to position i'.
The arm 60 is carried by a shaft 61 mounted in a suitable bearing arranged in the housing 29. At the outer end of this shaft is secured an arm 62 which rises through an opening 63 of the plate 1. The upper end of this arm is graduated as shown in fig. 3. These graduations are intended to be used in conjunction with a fixed line engraved on the upper face of the frame and to indicate the length of the stitch, since this length is determined by the position of the arm 62, which itself governs the position. of the center of oscillation of the rod 58.
The arm 62 is pivotally connected, at 64, to a link 65 which is provided with a threaded portion 66 on which is mounted a disc 67 forming
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
projecting upwards through an opening 68 of the frame 1.
This disc 67 is knurled and the operator can turn it.
The opening 68 allows this rotation but prevents any lateral movement of the disc, the arrangement therefore being such that when the disc is rotated the link 65 moves lengthwise. On this link is mounted a head 60 which slides freely in a bearing formed in the lower rib 2 and supports the end of said link, thus maintaining the disc 67 in the opening of the frame.
The needle thread is controlled by a lifting arm 70 connected to the crankpin 9. A link 71 pivots on this lifting arm 70 and is also pivotally connected, at 73, to the needle head. As the crankpin 9 rotates, the arm 70 receives an oscillating movement so as to lift and release the thread in order to properly adjust the stitch and unwind the thread from its feeder.
It follows from the foregoing that all the rotating parts are actuated by a direct gear connection with the main motor shaft and that all the reciprocating parts are positively actuated.
It can also be seen that the parts which are necessary to effect the movements of the needle bar and of the hook as well as to move the feed dog are relatively few in number. This direct positive control of the actuated parts contributes greatly to efficiency both in stitch formation and stitch length, which is determined by the movements of the claw. The machine can be operated at a relatively high speed and is
<Desc / Clms Page number 12>
silent, in addition to working efficiently.
Figs. 8 and 9 show another embodiment of the device for manually moving the parts which control the movements of the traction claw. The shaft 61 of the previous construction is replaced by a longer shaft 37 'which is extended to the interior of the column. On a shaft 38 'attached to the shaft 37', at the end of this shaft that contains the column, a rod composed of two sections pivots
39 'and 39 "joined together by a screw connection. The 39" section projects out of the column and is fitted at its upper end with a knurled head
44 'resting against the external face of the column. To this section 39 "is also fixed a collar 48 bearing against the internal face of the column.
Section 39 "therefore cannot move in the direction of its length but can rotate freely. When rotated in either direction it screws into section 39 ', which shortens the rod. This has the effect to move the arm
38 'and thus modify the movement of the feed dog. When rotating the knurled head 44 'in the opposite direction, the rod lengthens and this also has the effect of moving the arm 38', but in the opposite direction, thus causing an opposite change in the length of the stroke. 'training.
