cylindres d'entraînement pour la rotation de l'aiguille qui est pourvue d'une plaque dentée(profil et plan pour la vue de gauche) au pas de l'aiguille,formant table ou support du tissu à coudre;3,vue schématique,profil et élévation de l'en- semble de la machine,montrant la disposition des cylindres inférieurs supportant l'aiguille et celle du cylindre supé- rieur monté sur leviers pour permettre d'exercer sur cette aiguille,la pression utile pour assurer sa rotation;

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

Helical needle device for mechanically sewing packing canvas bags.
The present invention relates to a helical needle device making it possible to perform the sewing mechanically on bags made from coarse stitching fabric of all kinds.
The object of this invention is to achieve in a mechanical manner, on a special machine very different from ordinary sewing machines, the sewing of bags of all sizes, whatever the material used for their preparation as well as 'the nature and kind of the twine necessary. to obtain a point of binding of the parts or edges of the fabric to be joined, with or without folds, responding well to the very strength of the fabric used and also suitable for the use for which cos

bags are intended.
So far there is no practical machine capable of sewing properly, heavy canvas sacks, such as coal delivery sacks for example and other seams which require a very strong seam, with folds, made. with tarred twine or not.
@n is therefore obliged to use the needle 4 'wrapper or other type of needle of the same kind and to operate these seams by hand, which increases the price of these objects without however for this, give the advantage of flower, nish a seam of greater strength and better made.
It is in order to obtain a more regular and more solid work that we have been led to search for the device which will be described which is characterized by the use of a helical needle whose turns are arranged to maintain and let escape as it entrusts the string threaded first of all in a guide hole made for this purpose behind the point Needle sleeve being driven by a rotational movement operated by friction by means of cylinders with Particular helical splines whose pitch corresponds to that of the helix of the needle, which cylinders are controlled by gears and hand crank or motor.
A simple elastic pressure of one of the driving cylinders ensures the rotation of the needle, the point of which engages in the sewing fabric, this fabric resting either on a rec 'tilinear table or on an endless apron, with teeth or hollow corresponding to the pitch of the needle so that this needle forms a helical point by successive entry of its turns, the development of which is in relation, number of turns or diameter of the turns, with the length of the seam to be executed.
Figures 1 to 5, attached to the present description, relate to the device imagined as constructed and applied to meet the intended purpose. In 1, profile and elevation of the helical needle alone; 2, profile and elevation showing three

drive cylinders for the rotation of the needle which is provided with a toothed plate (profile and plane for the left view) at the pitch of the needle, forming a table or support for the fabric to be sewn; 3, schematic view, profile and elevation of the whole of the machine, showing the arrangement of the lower cylinders supporting the needle and that of the upper cylinder mounted on levers to allow the pressure to be exerted on this needle to ensure its rotation;
4, elevational view of an endless apron device, replacing the table shown in fig.2; 5, plan view of some elements or notched bars constituting this deck.
Referring to these drawings, it can be seen that the needle A, the main object of the invention is wound in a helix comprising a certain number of turns a, A groove b, is made on the top of this helix so as to present a rim higher on one side than on the other, 1 higher than! ', to allow the twine wound in this helioiidale groove to disengage from the grooved cylinders to form the point.
The ends of the helix side are terminated by a point c, each for a direction of rotation and behind these points is an eyelet or hole e, for the passage of the sewing string.
With the needle thus arranged, a rotational movement must be imparted to it in one direction or the other and a seat for the fabric to be sewn must be provided up to the interval between the turns. The rotational movement of A is obtained using 'cylinders D, with helical splines h, the pitch of which corresponds to that of A.
Two lower cylinders, the journals of which rest in the back bearings of the C support, its wedge arranged. Fig. 3 shows it to me and a third cylinder is mounted on levers E, articulated by means of F or otherwise, so as to be able to wash to place the needle A, in the grooves of the two lower cylinders D and then operate the folding with any means allowing ox-

exert a certain pressure on A, either by its own weight or by adapting an appropriate elastic system with the help of springs The helical splines of cylinders D, indicated in h, are rounded on one side with a notch or simple bevel i, to promote not only the release of the twine,
but also to prevent it from being stuck during its course and from cutting itself.
Under these mounting conditions, it is understood that if the journals of the cylinders D are provided with its gears useful for their rotation, a crank H, wedged on one of these lower cylinders, actuated in the desired sound will cause the rotation. of A. If therefore we have a table G, with notches, cor- responding to the pitch of A, (see fig. 2) any fabric M, placed on this table will be crossed by the point c, of the needle and if this needle wound or twine, its unwinding with A, will form a stitch as the turns enter this fabric by advancing it by the length corresponding to the development of all the turns.
In addition, depending on whether the fabric is advanced more or less in front of the notched table G, the fold of the edges to be sewn will be formed at the same time as the seam, if this is necessary.
Note that a double endless apron J, J 'could advantageously replace the previous table G. The fabric M, would be trapped in J, J' on one side or the other, depending on the direction of rotation. of A, and would advance by successive entry of its turns to exit at the opposite end, the seam performed.
Like table G, this apron would be formed from m slats, presenting notches on one side! , introduction of the turns a, of A, and all the lamellae would be connected together by appropriate means for proper operation and as is practiced in such a case,
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
The operation of such a needle is very simple, the string is passed through the eyelet e, a few turns of the crank wind it in the hollows b. This operation completed, the layers of fabric to be sewn are presented on the table. G, or between the apron J, J '(see fig. 3 and 4) direction of advance indicated by the arrows according to the direction of rotation of A) so that the point o, stitches the fabric and that before its rotation,
its turns enter successively into this fabric so that each point stitched by the point and for each entire revolution of the needle forms a continuous helical seam with or without folding of the sewn edges.
