<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
butoir.
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>

Automatic adjustment device for brakes.
The present invention relates to a device for the brakes of vehicles, especially of railway wagons, of the type in which an automatic regulator of the clearances between the shoes and the wheels of the so-called double-acting type is mounted in an appropriate position in the Linkage between the source of braking force and the shoes, this device being used to compensate for variations, of the play between the brake shoes and the wheels, due to the wear of said shoes, to variations in load on the wagon, etc. so as to maintain said clearances at a constant value by shortening or lengthening the rod of the linkage, in which the automatic regulator is mounted.
The aforementioned type of double-acting regulator
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
can be roughly characterized as follows: While the device for reducing clearances may be of any of the constructions known and in use for the same purpose, the apparatus is also provided with a device for increasing clearances, operating essentially as follows: If the clearances are too small, the linkage is subjected to tension forces before the piston has completed its normal stroke corresponding to the absorption of the clearances.
The regulator is arranged so as to yield to such voltages when they have reached a certain value; effective length of the regulator is thus increased automatically and allows the piston to complete its normal stroke without increasing said tensions and without producing actual braking. When the piston reaches the point corresponding to the normal application of the shoes against the wheels, a locking device is put into action, preventing the governor from subsequently giving out, and thus allowing the braking effect to come into action. It emerges from the foregoing that the regulator, yielding in the manner described, will be adjusted in length by an amount corresponding exactly to that necessary to bring back the undersized clearances to their normal value.
This avoids the need for manual adjustments each time the worn shoes are replaced with new ones. Such automatic double-acting regulators are known and do not form the novelty of the invention,
However, practice has shown that stresses can also occur in the linkage under the influence of inertia, eg when sorting wagons fitted with regulators of the above-named species, when the wagons are struck violently. one against the other or against one
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
stopper. Such voltages can cause unintended operation of the regulators which increases backlash when not required.
The object of the invention is to eliminate this drawback by locking the clearance regulator when the brake is released; the locking device used for this purpose is arranged so as to be deactivated under the influence of the air pressure admitted into the cylinder or of variations in pressure therein, thus allowing the regulator to function normally.
An embodiment of the invention applied to an automatic regulator of the clearances between the shoes and the wheels and actuated by a pressurized fluid is shown schematically on the attached sheet of drawings.
Fig. 1 shows, in plan, the pressurized fluid brake equipped according to the invention.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the appropriate play regulator, shown on a larger scale than in FIG. 1.
Fig. 3 is a cross section taken along line a-b of FIG. 2,
In the board, 1 represents the brake cylinder and 2 the double-acting automatic game regulator, which in a known manner is mounted in the brake linkage bearing the general designation 3. This linkage is provided for transmitting, in the usual manner, the braking movement from the force source to the brake shoes (the latter not being shown in the drawing). The clearances regulator is arranged so as to adjust, in a known manner, the clearances which exist between the wheels of the wagon and the shoes under the influence.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
partial or total of the tensions arising in the linkage, and it can be of any suitable construction and independent of the invention.
It can also be mounted in any position in the linkage or in any rod thereof, the invention therefore being independent of the type of linkage employed.
It is therefore obvious that the invention is not limited either to a specific type or construction of regulator, or to a specific type or construction of linkage,
In the embodiment of the regulator shown in the drawings by way of example, it is of the type comprising a threaded rod 4 with a pitch sufficiently large to be reversible, this rod cooperating with the internal thread 5 of a. rotating sleeve-nut 6 axially displaceable in a housing 7, In the embodiment shown this housing 7 is fixed by its base to one of the ends of the brake cylinder 1, and a lever which is part of the linkage 3 serving the transmission of the braking force from the piston to the shoes is articulated on the free end of the threaded rod 4.
A base 8 of the nut sleeve 6 and a rotating ring 9, both inside the housing 7, form the two parts of a coupling. The base 8 is under the constant action of a spring 11 which tends to apply it against the ring 9, a certain clearance being provided between the other face of the base 8 and a corresponding bearing surface. 7a from inside the casing 7, the coupling ring 9 presses against the casing by means of a ball bearing 9a. This stop is used to reduce the frictional resistance which opposes the rotation of the ring in one of the directions of rotation, when too large a clearance must
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
be reduced. The opposite end of the spring 11 presses on the bottom of the housing 7 by means of a ratchet wheel 14 'and a ball stop 10.
The ratchet wheel is keyed on the sleeve 6 so as to allow axial displacement of this sleeve 6 corresponding to the clearance between the base 8 and the bearing surface 7a when the force of the spring 11 is overcome, but to prevent rotation. of the wheel 14 relative to the sleeve. The coupling ring 9 can rotate in the housing 7 in one direction only, its rotation in the other direction being prevented by a stop device designated in principle by 12, its construction not being shown in detail. This one-way stop device can be constructed in any way, as any technician can easily understand; in the embodiment shown in the drawing, this device is assumed to consist of a wire torsion spring with rectangular section.
According to the drawings, the regulator is assumed to be of the pneumatic type and its control device consists of a cylinder 21 provided with a piston 22 movable in this cylinder; this piston is subjected on one side to the force of a spring 25 and supports a pawl 23 which engages in the wheel 14 named above. The cylinder 21 is connected by a pipe 24 to the brake cylinder 1 at an appropriate point along its length, and preferably at a point corresponding to the stroke of the brake piston which corresponds to the normal clearances. When the piston, during braking, exceeds the connection point of the pipe 24, the pressure in the brake cylinder is transmitted to the cylinder 21 acts on the piston 22, which by moving inward compresses the spring 25,
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
the pawl 23 thus being engaged with the ratchet wheel 14.
If the clearances are too large, the shoes are not brought into contact with the wheels and the piston 22 then continues its stroke and performs, via the ratchet wheel 23,14, a rotation of the sleeve 6 and consequently quent a reduction in clearances.
The rotation of the sleeve 6 with respect to the housing 7 in the direction of increased clearances is prevented by the friction of the parts of the coupling 8,9, and the one-way stopper 12 until that the tensions which form in the linkage 3 during braking have reached a value sufficient to overcome the force of the spring 11. When this spring is compressed under the influence of said tensions so that the base 8 disengages from the ring 9 and allows a rotation of the bush 6 with respect to the housing 7 and to the threaded rod 4, the reversible thread of the latter causes a rotation of the parts 6, 8 and 14 until the pawl 23 or another pawl 15 described later, engages in the corresponding toothed wheel, or that. said pawls engage and prevent rotation.
When rotation is prevented, the spring 11 is subsequently compressed until the base 8 comes into contact with the bearing surface 7a, which will henceforth withstand the developed braking tension. If the piston 22 comes into action before the braking tension occurs in the linkage, the members 18, 8 and 6 rotate in the opposite direction so as to reduce the play. The coupling ring can then easily turn thanks to the stop 1 ball 9a, and the stop device 12 does not prevent the rotation of the ring in this direction.
When the brake voltage occurs
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
the components are already locked and cannot rotate, the braking force can then develop as described above. It is easy to understand for any technician that the pneumatic maneuver described above can be replaced by any other suitable means, eg by a mechanically acting device in a manner known for a long time.
It was noted above that unintentional stresses can occur in the linkage when the brake is released, eg when sorting wagons, and that such stresses can cause the governor to operate in a reverse direction. increased clearances at a time when such an adjustment is not necessary. To eliminate this drawback, the regulator is fitted with a locking device normally preventing an increase in clearances, this device being released under the influence of the pressure admitted into the brake cylinder or of the pressure reigning in the latter, when braking. This locking device can be constructed in many different ways, all within the scope of the invention.
According to the embodiment shown in the drawing, the locking device is supposed to cooperate with the ratchet wheel 14 and consists of a pawl 15 also named above. The pawl 15 is mounted on a rod connected 1 to a piston 17 subjected to the influence of a spring and moving in a small cylinder 18, connected to the brake cylinder 1 by means of a pipe 19.
In the normal state, the pawl 15 is engaged in the toothed wheel 14 and prevents the rotation of the sleeve 6, thus locking the regulator against any increase in clearances. When pressure is admitted in cylinder 1
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
in order to effect braking, this pressure is instantly transmitted to cylinder 18, in which piston 17 is pushed back by overcoming the force of spring 20, disengaging pawl 15 from toothed wheel 14 and thus releasing the regulator.
In order to enable the pawl 15 to assist the pawl 23 to prevent unintentional rotation of the sleeve 6 when the pressure of the brake cylinder, during braking, is admitted into the cylinder 21, the pawl is mounted by means of a pin 16, on a lever 27, which itself is articulated on a pin 26 of the housing 7. This lever is at its free end connected to the piston 22 or to the rod of this piston, so as to be driven by the movement of said piston, Thus, when the piston 22 is pushed down, against the action of the spring 25, the lever 27 is tilted, thus bringing the pawl 15 into action with the toothed wheel 14, although the piston 17 is also connected to this pawl and is forced into its lower position against the action of spring 20.
The regulator can be constructed in any known or appropriate manner so as to be suitable both for increasing too small clearances as for reducing too large clearances. In the embodiment shown in the drawings, the threaded rod 4 forming part of the regulator is supposed to be placed in the linkage in such a way that it is subjected to a compressive force during braking, but it is obvious and understandable for any technician, that the regulator can also be placed in a different way, for example, so that the threaded rod, during braking, is subjected to a tractive force. In both cases, the
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
regulator, forming the object of the invention, will operate in the same way.
In addition, the regulator does not need to be rigidly connected to the brake cylinder, as shown in the drawing, but can also be placed almost anywhere in the linkage, with pipes 19 and 24 connecting it to the cylinder. 1 then being formed by flexible pipes of suitable construction.
