<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

Improvements in the manufacture of calcium hypochlorite.
The present invention relates to the manufacture of neutral or substantially neutral calcium hypochlorite.
According to this invention, substantially neutral calcium hypochlorite is obtained by subjecting basic calcium hypochlorite alone or as a mixture with lime to a cyclic process comprising its chlorination in aqueous suspension, the separation of the neutral hypochlorite and the treatment of the mother liquor with lime.
According to another characteristic of the invention, the treatment with chlorine of basic calcium hypochlorite or a mixture thereof with lime in aqueous suspension is preferably carried out at a temperature below 40 ° C. , in order to produce hypochlorite of
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
neutral calcium which is collected as a solid salt, the mother liquor being treated with lime without chlorine and the solid basic hypochlorite thus precipitated being separated and returned for the chlorination operation. The mother liquor resulting from the separation of the neutral hypochlorite, can, according to one variant, be treated with lime and chlorine to produce a solid basic hypochlorite which is separated for the purpose of chlorination in aqueous suspension. .
Preferably, these operations are carried out according to a cycle, starting from the treatment of a milk of lime by means of chlorine, the cycle itself being able to be started in several ways. Chlorination of milk of lime can be continued until substantially all of the hypochlorite produced is present as a neutral salt which can be fully dissolved or partly dissolved and partly precipitated.
In the latter case, the solid is separated from the mother liquor and dried in any suitable manner. The liquid resulting from the complete chlorination of lime is further treated with lime to precipitate the basic hypochlorite which is used to establish the cycle by the aqueous suspension chlorination. As an alternative, the chlorination can be discontinued when the slurry contains basic calcium hypochlorite in the solid state which is separated for subsequent chlorination.
In the present specification the term "basic hypochlorite !! is used to denote a compound or a mixture of compounds of calcium hydroxide and calcium hypochlorite and it should not be limited to the designation of a single one. compound.
The invention further relates to the operation of chloru-

ration in aqueous suspension of basic hypochlorite produced by one of the methods mentioned, or of a mixture of basic hypochlorite and additional lime, to produce neutral calcium hypochlorite. The proportions of basic hypochlorite, lime and water are preferably chosen so as to cause the precipitation of neutral calcium hypochlorite in the solid state, although the chlorination can be continued in the presence of. a quantity of water such that hypochlorite remains in solution, and in this case it is subsequently precipitated by evaporation.
Neutral calcium hypochlorite is separated in a solid state. It can be compressed and dried in a stream of hot air or treated in any other known way to remove the adherent mother liquor therefrom and to dry the product.
The basic hypochlorite necessary to continue the cycle of operations is produced by the addition of lime to the mother liquor remaining after the separation of the neutral salt. At this time, a further quantity of neutral hypochlorite in solution can also be introduced into the cycle, independently prepared by a separate chlorination of milk of lime. Alternatively, lime can be added to the water. - mother in the form of a milk of lime, and the mixture, with or without separation of the basic hypochlorite from the mother liquor, can be subjected to chlorination, the latter being interrupted when solid basic hypochlorite is still found in this whitewash.
The liquid remaining after removal of the basic hypochlorite can be discarded, but it is better to treat it to remove chlorates.
It is obviously known to chlorinate lime in aqueous suspension to obtain neutral calcium hypochlorite.

cium, but it is advantageous to produce neutral hypochlorite from an isolated basic hypochlorite as an intermediate product, for example as a filter residue, since it thus becomes possible to remove from the cycle. in this phase, in the form of mother liquor, a large amount of calcium chloride and thus obtain a filtration residue consisting of much purer neutral hypochlorite, containing less calcium chloride.
EXAMPLE 1.
-----------
A lime milk composed of 90 parts by weight of lime and 200 parts of water is stirred, and 75 parts of chlorine are introduced into it, maintaining the temperature, especially towards the end, below 30 C.
The separated neutral calcium hypochlorite is vacuum filtered, pressed and dried in a stream of hot air.
The mother liquors are stirred with 40 parts of lime and the resulting basic hypochlorite is separated by filtration.
To the basic hypochlorite thus obtained, a further quantity of lime is added and the whole is used for the chlorination.
The mother liquor of basic hypochlorite is used for the manufacture of chlorates.
EXAMPLE 2.
-----------
The process is shown schematically in FIG. 1 of the accompanying drawing. In this diagram 1 indicates the arrival of the raw materials which are water, chlorine and lime.
18 kg. of lime transformed into milk of lime with 39 kg. of water are treated in container 2 by means of

15 kg. of chlorine, the temperature being maintained below 35 ° C. during most of the reaction and below 30 ° C. towards the end of the latter. The chlorinated milk of lime obtained has a content of 19.29% of Ca (OCl) and 16.88% of CaCl2.
This liquid is passed through the filter 3 to deposit 32.6 kg therein. of residue containing 32.19% of Ca (OC1) 2 and 12.5% of CaCl2 and give 39.4 kg. mother liquor containing 8.8% Ca (OCl) and 20.5% CaCl2.
The residue obtained after filtration of the chlorinated milk of lime can be treated in a suitable apparatus to remove the mother liquor and to give a product which is dried in the dryer 5 which gives a product 6 containing about 70% of Ca (OCl) 2.
The mother liquor containing 3.5 kg of Ca (OC1) 2 is then treated in apparatus 7 with lime designated in the diagram by 8, to preferably provide a bibasic compound Ca (OC1) 2 - 2 Ca (OH) 2 which is an intermediate product of the chlorination operation. To this end, 3.6 kg of lime are added to the mother liquor at normal temperature, the mixture being stirred for about an hour and then filtered through filter 9, giving 20 kg of wet basic residue, containing 2.3 kg of Ca (OC1) 2. The remaining liquid is withdrawn from the cycle of operations.
To complete the cycle, the solid basic residue is returned to container 2, mixed with 14.5 to 15 kg of lime and 25 kg of water, to form the starting point for the next chlorination.
The mother liquor which has been eliminated in 4 of the filtration residue consisting of neutral hypochlorite in order to facilitate

liter its drying, can also be treated with lime, in the same way as the liquid coming from apparatus 3.
EXAMPLE 3.
-----------
The method forming the subject of this example is shown schematically in FIG. 2. The raw materials are introduced into the cycle at two points, namely in 1 water, lime and chlorine and in 6 water and chlorine. 58 kg of slaked lime containing about 94% of Ca (OH) 2 are mixed with 126 kg of water and stirred well in the chlorination apparatus 2, while 26 kg of chlorine are introduced into it, while maintaining the temperature at about 30 C.
The resulting product is passed through filter 3, where it leaves 54 kg of residue containing approximately 35% of active chlorine and consisting essentially of basic hypochlorite and adherent mother liquor. The liquid resulting from this filtering is shown at 4 and leaves the operating cycle. The basic hypochlorite constituting the residue is mixed with 108 kg of water in the chlorinator 5 and well stirred, while 24 kg of chlorine is introduced therein, while maintaining the temperature at about 30 kg. C, to produce a slurry containing neutral calcium hypochlorite. This sludge then passes through the filter 7 which retains 31.5 kg of resin and allows 153 kg of mother water 8 to pass, containing approximately 14% of active chlorine and 11% of calcium chloride.
The residue is dried in a dryer 9 to give a final product 10, containing about 75% active chlorine. To mother liquor 8 which is returned to the chlorination apparatus 2, 33.5 kg of tinted lime and 17 kg of water are added, and the mixture is stirred well while 4 is introduced into it, 7 kg of chlorine, in order to produce a
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
sludge containing basic hypochlorite. This sludge is filtered in 3, producing 54 kg of basic hypochlorite residue to continue the cycle.
