Brevet d'invention.

Fig.l est une vue en élévation avec parties en coupe, de la machine avec ses organes en position voulue pour le bi- seautage d'un verre ou analogue de forme elliptique* Fig.2 est une vue en plan;

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

Patent.
Machine for polishing glass, mirrors and the like and for beveling rounds and ovals.
The invention relates to a machine for polishing glass, glasses and the like and for bevelling round and oval shapes, of the kind in which the shaft of the grinding wheel or polisher is driven by a movement. of rotation and of an orbital movement around a vertical support shaft.
It essentially consists in that in order to make the grinding wheel describe at will a circular path or a variable elliptical path,
the vertical support shaft is journalled in a horizontally sliding carriage and can at will be kept stationary or be animated by a back and forth movement of variable amplitude by means of a cam or eccentric system fixed on him and cooperating with fixed stops
A preferred embodiment of the invention consists
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
form the eccentric by a circular disc rotating with the shaft and movable on it transversely.,
so as to be able to be placed coaxially or eccentrically with this shaft between two guides arranged transversely to the movement of the carriage *
The invention also consists in that the platform is carried by a vettical shaft by which it can be driven by a rotational movement and in that means are provided to ensure the immobilization of this platform. to allow the bevelling of the ovals and, if desired, the circles.
The machine allows the work of the grinding wheel or polisher either on the entire surface of the platform and consequently on the entire surface of the glass which is fixed to it for the purpose of polishing, or exclusively at certain places determined by the round or oval shape of the glass or the like to be beveled.
Other features of the invention will become apparent from the following description of an example of an embodiment of this invention.
Fig. 1 is an elevational view, with parts in section, of the machine with its members in the desired position for the beveling of a glass or the like of elliptical shape. Fig. 2 is a plan view;
In the frame 1 in the form of a gantry is fixed a crossbar 2 in which is journalled the vertical shaft 3 on which the platform 4 is wedged. This shaft 3 rests in the thrust bearing 5 and carries, wedged on it, the angle gear 6 which forms a bevel pair with the pinion 7 wedged on the shaft of the electric motor 2.
Guides 9 are also fixed to the frame 1 in which the carriage 10 can slide horizontally and it is in this carriage 10 that the vertical shaft 11 carrying the bearing 12 of the shaft 13 to which the grinding wheel or the polished

evening 14, by means of which is worked the glass or the like 15 fixed in a known manner on the platform 4.
The vertbal shaft 11 has a square lower part on the, which is fixed the horizontal guide 16 in which is silted the slide 17 carrying the bearing 12 of the shaft 13.
This slide 17 can be immobilized in the desired position in the guide 16 by means of the nut 18 screwed on the bolt 19 which passes through the buttonhole 20 of said slide, so as to adjust the eccentricity of the shaft 13 according to the di - Measurements of the glass or the like to be worked by the grinding wheel or polisher 14 fixed to this shaft 13.
The pad 12 has a vertical groove in dovetail section engaged on a vertical tenon 21 with a similar section of the slide 17, so that the grinding wheel or polisher 14 rests on the plate to be worked and supports the weight of said pad 12. The adjustment of the pressure of the grinding wheel 14 can be obtained by a counterweight such as for example 22 movable on the lever 23 pivoted on the slide 17 and pressing at 24 on the bearing 12.
The vertical shaft extends to the upper part of the gantry frame 1, between two parallel guides 25 rigidly fixed to this frame; these guides 25 are disposed transversely to the movement of the carriage 10 and the disc 26 which rotates between them comprises a radial slide 27 by which it is engaged on the upper square end of said shaft 11. The radial slide 27 is bounded with edges 28 projecting on the upper face of the disc 26 and one of which is provided with a buttonhole 29 which passes through a threaded rod 30 trapped in the shaft 11.
A nut 31 is screwed onto this rod 30 making it possible to immobilize the disc 26 either in a coaxial position or in an eccentric position on said shaft 11.
On this shaft 11 is also wedged the angle gear 32 which forms a bevel pair with the pinion 33 wedged on the shaft.

of the electric motor 34 carried by the carriage 10.
Surrounding the artery 11, a chain wheel 35 is rigidly fixed to the carriage 10 by a bracket 36. This wheel 35 carries a chain 37 passing over the chain wheel 38 wedged on the shaft 13 of the grinding wheel 14.
Set screws 39 with handwheels 40 take in nuts 41 formed in the cross member 2 and form jacks for the immobilization of the platform 4 when the machine is used for bevelling *
The shaft 11 being rotated by the motor 34 while the platform 4 is immobilized and the disc 26 is fixed eccentrically, this disc exerts a thrust alternately on each of the guides 25 and this thrust causes a movement of translation of the carriage 10 alternately in one direction and the other.
During this time, the grinding wheel 14 describes a circular orbit around the shaft 11 and is at the same time animated by a rotational movement on itself which is imparted to it by its shaft 13, the chain wheel 38 of which is driven by chain 37 passing over stationary chain wheel 35 attached to carriage 10.
It will be understood that the orbit described by the grinding wheel 14 will be elliptical, since the shaft 11 around which this orbit occurs moves parallel to itself with the carriage 1a.
To bevel glasses and the like of round shape, the nut 31 is loosened to allow the movement of the disc 26 and this disc is immobilized in a coaxial position on the shaft 11, which has the effect, during the rotation of this disc. shaft, to keep the carriage 10 stationary and to make the grinding wheel 14 describe a circular orbit at the same time as it turns on itself. The platform 4 can also in this
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
case be released from the action of the jacks 39 and set in rotation by the motor 8, its circular movement opposite to that of the grinding wheel 14 then being added thereto.
For polishing glass and the like, the grinding wheel or polish 14 will be flat-bottomed and the disc 26 will generally be placed more or less eccentrically to the shaft 11 depending on the surface to be worked.
In all cases, the eccentricity of the grinding wheel shaft 13 relative to the shaft 11 will be adjusted by means of the slide 17; the length and the tension of the chain 37 being able to be adjusted in any known manner, for example by a wheel or a tensioner roller, not shown.
It will be understood that the invention is independent of the shapes, proportions, devices and details of execution and extends to all means equivalent to those described for obtaining the same result.
