<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

"x '" e'ectionreum.r s in the laundry';. ses.
Known household washing machines comprise a container and an agitator movable up and down in said container, to cause the circulation of the liquid to be washed through the laundry to be washed.
Hitherto, when washing machines are controlled by electric motors, as they are ordinarily employed in this type of service, it has been customary to employ mechanical reduction gears, because the usual speed of motors is about 1800 rpm, while the movement of the oscillating agitator should be about 60 p. minute or less.
The main object of the present invention is to provide a simple and safe device for the transmission of the driving force for washing machines with reciprocating agitator or washing member, controlled by an electric motor,
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
Another object of the invention is to make possible the use of the electric motor of the ordinary household dust vacuum cleaner as an initial source of motive force to control the washer.
Yet another object is the provision of means for controlling in a simple manner the operation of the device for transmitting the motive force.
The invention consists, mainly in the combination with a household washing machine of the kind described, of a piston vacuum machine having a reciprocating piston which supports the agitator of the washing machine, said vacuum machine at udder. - Your being suitable for being actuated by atmospheric pressure against a vacuum produced by means of an electric fan, preferably the electrically controlled fan of a vacuum cleaner.
The accompanying drawing shows an embodiment of the invention in vertical section through the center.
On the top, 1 is a container for the laundry and for the laundry to be washed and 2 is the lid of said container. On said cover, the cylinder 4 of a vacuum engine is fixed by means of uprights 3. A piston 5 provided in said supporting cylinder, in the container 1 and by means of rods 6, an agitator 7.
Attached to the top of the cylinder is a socket 16, said socket being tapered bore 17 to provide coupling means for connecting the flexible hose of an electric vacuum cleaner or other vacuum line. 'an electric fan, with the interior of the cylinder. The chamber under the piston is in constant communication with the atmosphere through the openings 21 in the cylinder wall.
The piston 5 is provided with an opening 9 controlled by a valve 10 which is under the pressure of a spring 9 The tension of said spring is adjusted in such a way that the spring cannot open the valve when it is closed and that we maintain the vacuum in the interior of the

cylinder. The stem 11 of the valve 10 is arranged to cooperate with a stopper 12 in the upper position of the piston so that the valve is partially open when the stem

fully under the action of the spring 9.
In the lower position of the piston the valve 10 cooperates with a stop 13 which causes the partial closing of the valve and a partial reestablishment of the vacuum in the cylinder when the valve hits the said stop, after which the valve is fully closed. against the action of the spring9 by the action of the suction ;.
In combination with the socket 16, means are provided for controlling the operation of the vacuum engine. For this purpose the basket 16 is provided with air intake openings 18 which constitute

In this way a vacuum is produced in the interior of the cylinder 4 which causes the upward movement of the piston 5 with the agitator 7. When the piston reaches its upper position.

By its own weight and by the weight of the agitator 7 the piston 5 is then lowered to its lower position and when said position is reached. valve 10 hits the stopper 13 which closes the valve. The vacuum is then reestablished inside the cylinder above the piston by the continuous suction effect of the suction line, so that the piston 5 and the agitator are again raised to the upper position. and the cycle described repeats. The vacuum motor is continued to be operated in this manner until the laundry is sufficiently washed.
If the suction effect of the vacuum drive connected to socket 16 of the vacuum cylinder is too strong, the operation of the vacuum engine will not be satisfactory and above all the valve 10 will not be. not fully closed in the lower position of the piston To avoid this inconvenience it suffices to increase the openings 18 by unscrewing the sleeve 20 upwards until the suction effect on the piston is sufficient.
EMI4.2
Sah i ± nt decreased If, on the other hand, the suction effect is too low, the number of oscillations per minute will be reduced or the piston will remain in the lower position.
In this case the openings 18 are reduced by screwing the sleeve 20 downwards, until the suction effect on the piston reaches the desired degree *
The present invention is not limited to the devices described and shown in the drawing for controlling the effect of suction on the piston; any adjustable valve construction which may be employed for this purpose.
