<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

clamping and closing device for strapping straps.
The present invention relates to the devices for tightening and closing the strapping of strips, with which the boxes, bundles and other packaging are surrounded, a sheet sleeve being threaded, in the known manner, on the two superimposed ends of the strip stretched by a known mechanism, said ends being secured in this sleeve by notches - the made on the edges of the sleeve and the strip.
In practice, devices of this kind required strips of strip of determined length, cut in advance, which, after having been passed around the package to be strapped, were tensioned by the device provided, so that the length of strip exceeding the height of the strip. the notching of the socket, and leading to the tensioning mechanism, was lost.
The invention aims' to create a clamping and closing device or apparatus by which the strip, unwound for example from a coil, is passed around the body or other object to be strapped, its free end and the continuous part. su -

perposed thereto being passed through the sleeve, after which, the strip being stretched in the known manner, the closure is determined by the operation of a single lever (notching of the edges of the sleeve and of the two thicknesses of strip superimposed there) and cutting the strip of strip coming from the coil, right against the sleeve, so as not to cause any waste.
This is achieved by the fact that the part carrying the scoring knife, and movable vertically by the effect of a cam integral with the operating lever, carries, at a suitable distance from said knife, a second simple knife, adjusted exactly in height so such that, when the scoring knife is at full stroke, this additional knife is descended to the upper face of the lower strip, therefore, is forced to cut the upper strip without attacking the lower one.
In order to make the invention fully understood, and the way in which it can be implemented in practice, it is shown in the accompanying drawing by way of example: FIG. 1 is a front elevational view of the apparatus. , showing in detail the closing mechanism, in the raised state, the front wall of the box of this mechanism being removed.
Fig. 2 gives on a larger scale the position of the same mechanism, at the time of sectioning and closing.
Fig.3 is an end view of the knife holder part.
Fig. 4 is a plan view of the complete apparatus.
The apparatus comprises a base 1 on which are mounted, in alignment, the two main tensioning devices and that of closing and cutting. The first is from any known system; it consists, for example, of a drum 2 with a grooved cylindrical surface, coacting with a grooved part 6 of the base 1. This drum is rotated in one direction only by the lever 3 acting by spring-loaded pawl on a solid ratchet - da, ire of the drum; a cam 4, operated by lever 5, allows
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
a slight lifting of the drum and its control for the passage of the strips and their release between the drum 2 and the base 1. This tension mechanism, or any other, can be supplemented by any device, for example of guiding and retaining straps, etc. These devices are outside the invention.
The closing and cutting mechanism is essentially constituted by a vertical slide 7 guided exactly in a box 8 forming part of the frame. At its upper part, this slide carries a substantially elliptical opening 9, in which is engaged a cam 10 carried by the operating lever 11, the axis 12 of which passes through the walls of the box. 8.
As shown in fig. 1, the box 8, open at the bottom and at the top, does not end up to the plane of the base 1; at the location of this box, the base 1 is extended by a base 13 extending transversely to and under the boot. This base 13 has two side edges 14 and a central depression, 15, the purpose of which will be explained later.
The slide carries, at its lower part, a transverse knife 16, projecting on the lower face of the slide; this knife is substantially in the shape of an inverted V, as shown in fig.3. It is mounted, by screw 17, exactly in the vertical plane passing through the axis of the base 130 The slider carries a second knife 18, fixed by screw 19; this knife has a straight cut edge, and protrudes slightly, on the underside of the slide. Its cutting edge is in the extension of the inner face of one of the edges 14 of the base 13.
The operation is as follows.
The device is placed flat on the box to be strapped; the strip coming from a coil not shown, is passed in the known manner, around the body, so that its free end 20 is covered by the strip 21 going to the coil (fig. 2),
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
this free end and the strip superimposed on it being passed through a flat sleeve 22. The sleeve 22 is engaged, with the two thicknesses of strip 20 and 21, on the bottom * 13, the width of which between flanges 14 is precisely equal to the length of the socket. The strip 21 is passed under the drum 2 (operation of the lever 5) then, by the lever 3, the strip is stretched in the known manner. The bands superimposed above the base 13 are, therefore, strongly supported on the edges 14.
The lever 11 is then moved to the right, which has the effect of lowering the slide 7. The inverted V-shaped knife 16 thus acts on the side edges of the sleeve notching them, with the edges of the two thicknesses of strip, and folding them towards the bottom of the depression 15.
When the slide 7 reaches the end of its travel, its knife 18 comes into contact with the upper strip 21, and cuts it right up against the bush (figure 2) This knife is adjusted so that at the end of its travel it is moved away from the flange 14 exactly the thickness of the strip, so that the lower strip 20 is not notched.
By a single operation of the lever 11, one therefore performs the closing of the strapping, and the cutting of the strip of the coil exactly at] 'place of closure. There is therefore no waste of strip, nor any dangerous protruding part.
It is obvious that the vertical upward and downward movement of the slider 7 could be determined by other means than the cam 10 and the slot 9, without departing for this from the invention.
