<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
possible l'encombrement.
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>

"Improvements. Brought to. Flexible transmissions for remote controls Il !.
@ The invention relates to flexible control devices for controlling moving parts established in inaccessible or remote locations; and it relates more especially to flexible controls suitable for transmitting a tensile or compressive force, by means of a flexible member, to the device to be operated.
The invention consists in providing not only a flexible transmission but also a flexible envelope for said transmission.
It also consists in constituting the devices of the kind in question by a flexible transmission sliding in a casing out of which one end projects in order to be able to transmit a movement to any device to be operated. By removing the transmission partly from its envelope it can, if necessary, flex while it transmits energy to the controlled device. For example
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
ple by transmitting a force to a lever or to an arm articulated to a pivot, it is necessary that the organ which transmits this force can move along a line other than a straight line and for this reason it must be able to flex.
It also consists of an arrangement, more specifically relating to that indicated in the preceding paragraph, according to which stiffening means are established near the ends of the flexible transmission in order to make these parts less flexible than the others.
More especially, this arrangement makes it possible to reinforce the part of the flexible transmission which extends beyond the casing so that this part cannot bend or form a loop when it is subjected to a compressive force.
The invention also consists of a flexible casing which can be held in place by a flange spaced from one end of this casing, which allows, when the flexible transmission engaged in this casing ends in a rigid part, that said envelope can flex, so that said transmission can act on an oscillating arm or the like.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for connecting the control member to the flexible transmission.
The invention also consists in having recourse to new means for connecting the various members forming part of the flexible control in order to make the latter more efficient.
The invention also consists of other arrangements which will be discussed more explicitly below.
The accompanying drawing shows, by way of example, some embodiments of the invention.
La.fig. 1 shows, parts in elevation, parts in section, a flexible transmission established according to the invention.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
Fig. 2 shows, similarly, a variant of part of the arrangement shown in FIG. 1.
Fig. ; 5 shows a section along 3-3 fig. 2.
Fig. 4 shows, on a larger scale, the end of the flexible transmission which is connected to the control member.
Fig. 5 shows a variant of the flexible transmission.
For devices of the kind in question, it is desirable to have recourse to flexible transmissions capable of transmitting both tensile and compressive forces without resulting in appreciable deformation of the control member and which intervenes easily and effectively to transmit the forces by being housed in an envelope which, if necessary, follows a line forming a more or less large angle, for various mechanical devices and more especially the driving machines, it is necessary to see, at different times, moving an organ which is at a certain distance from the operator and which can be arranged in such a way that it is necessary for the transmission to be forced to move along a line other than a right.
The object of the present invention is a device which makes it possible to obtain such an effect or such effects. Further, this invention relates to a flexible transmission member established in a flexible envelope which can be bent so that the flexible transmission occupies a suitable position with respect to the actuator and the member to be operated.
In fig. 1, 1 denotes a relatively fixed support in which is screwed a sleeve 2 engaged on a tubular part 7 in which is formed a longitudinal passage 5 in which can slide freely a rod or rigid element 4. This rod may include a groove 5 into which penetrates a projection 6 obtained by pushing back a
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
part of the wall of the sleeve 2, and this in order to prevent the rotation of the rod 4 inside the sleeve. The rod 4 carries a control button 8 which is acted on to move the rod 4 axially in the passage 3.
The lower end of the rod 4 is cut on both sides so as to form a flattened middle part 9 through which an orifice 10 passes. A flexible cable 11, formed by a desired number of wires, passes through said orifice 10 of so as to constitute a loop having substantially the shape shown in FIG. 1. This flexible cable is housed inside a sheath consisting of a wire., Wound in a helix and the different turns of which touch each other for the reason indicated below. After the sheath 1a and the cable 11 occupy their position shown in FIG. 1, the part 9, of smaller section, of the rod 4, the cable 11 and the upper end of the sheath 12 is surrounded by a certain quantity of material to be welded 13 which maintains these organs in the position shown in FIG. 1.
When one therefore acts on the rod 4, with the aid of the control button 8, the cable 11 and the sheath 12 are obliged to follow this movement.
The lower end of the tubular part 7 is widened at 14, so that one end of the flexible envelope 15 can be engaged therein. The latter is formed using a flat strip, which is wound in helix in the manner shown in the drawing, and which forms a very strong envelope capable of withstanding more deformation of its ends than an ordinary flexible envelope formed with the aid of a wire, of circular section and wound helix.
In other words, if we use a wire of rectangular cross section and if we arrange the sides of larger dimension of this section parallel to the longitudinal axis of the envelope,. an envelope which is more resistant to deformations in the direction of its length than it has been possible to achieve hitherto. It is advantageous, for devices of the kind in question, to reduce as much as
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
possible clutter.
When using a round wire, to constitute the flexible casing, it is necessary, in order to obtain the same resistance in the longitudinal direction as with the device according to the invention, to have recourse to a wire having a considerable diameter and this obviously increases the outside diameter of the tubular casing if we want the inside diameter to remain the same. By using a flattened wire a very strong casing is obtained with a minimum outside diameter and with a maximum resistance with regard to longitudinal deformations.
The cable 11 extends over the entire length of the sheath 12 and terminates at 16 in a part 17 of this sheath which extends beyond the flexible envelope 15. In order to reinforce the aforementioned part 17, it is necessary to introduces a piece of piano wire 18 into said part along the cable 11. This wire is more rigid than the flexible cable and has a tendency to avoid excessive bending of the part 17 which protrudes from the flexible envelope 15 and, when a compression stuffing is exerted on the cable with the aid of the rod 4, said part 17 does not risk bending too strongly under the effect of the compressive force. The part of the flexible sheath 12 which lies inside the casing 15 is prevented from flexing too strongly by being retained by the walls thereof.
To make the cable 11, the wire 18 and the flexible sheath 12 integral, keeping them in relative positions. appropriate, the end of this flexible assembly is immersed in material to be welded which fills all the inter- stances existing between the cable, the sheath and the wire (fig. 4).
These elements can be connected in any other suitable way, although the recommended one is the best and most efficient.
In fig. 1 has been shown a flexible element intended to control the movements of an arm 19 articulated to the fixed axis 20. To the arm 19 is articulated a part 21 which is integral with a flange 22, the internal diameter of which is sensi
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
ment equal to the external diameter of the part of the sheath 17 which is engaged in said flange and is held there by a screw 23. It follows that if the operator acts on the button 8 so as to move the part 4 in one direction for which it is released from its tubular housing 7, the force exerted on said button will be transmitted by the cable 11 to the part 17 of the flexible transmission and as the cable is welded to the sheath 12, the shaft 19 turns clockwise.
Likewise, if the operator pushes back the rod 4 until it is brought into: its original position, the force exerted for this purpose by the operator is transmitted by the rod 4 and the sheath 12 to the arm 19 and the latter turns in the direction. contrary to that indicated above. When compressive or tensile forces intervene to rotate. the aras 19, the rigidity of the sheath 12 and the piano wire 18 prevents bending of the part 17 of the flexible transmission which exits the casing 15.
While it is preferable to use a piano wire as a means of reinforcement, it is understood that any relatively stiff wire can be used to reinforce the end of the transmission or by any other means. reinforcement which, while giving rigidity to the end in question, nevertheless allows the latter to flex somewhat. The end of the flexible envelope 15 is rigidly attached to a relatively fixed support by means of a flange 24 held in place by screws 25.
However, instead of allowing the free part 17 of the transmission to ensure all the flexibility on its own, the flange 24 can be set in the position 241 shown in broken lines in FIG. 1. In other words, it can be arranged at a point which is located away from the end of the flexible casing 15 and at the same time engage the flexible transmission in the flange 22 at a point 221 close to the end of said 15-sum envelope shown in broken lines in FIG. 1, the braa then being. placed in 191.
For this
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
When the button 8 is acted upon to move the rod 4 and the sheath 12 longitudinally in the casing 15, the arm 191 rotates about its axis and the end of the casing 15, which is located at the end of the casing 15. of the. of the flange 241, flexes so as to allow the free end of the arm 191 to move in a direction other than straight. Bending of the end of the casing 15 gives substantially the same result as that of part 17 of the device shown in solid lines. At the same time, this part of the casing acts as a stiffening element for the sheath 12.
In fig. 2 has been shown a variant of the device for providing the connection between the control member 8 and the flexible transmission. In this case the tubular part 26 has ribs 27 at its upper end and the sleeve 28, screwed into the support 29, is forcibly engaged on the ribbed part of the tubular part 26 and the ribs penetrate into the material constituting the sleeve, which ensures solidarity between parts 26 and 28.
In fig. 1 these parts are assembled by pressing or by means of material to be welded. As in 'fig. 1, the enlarged part 14 of the tubular part can be welded to the casing 15. In FIG. 2, however, has been shown a coupling sleeve 30 which surrounds the end of the tubular part 26 and the adjacent end of the flexible casing 15, this sleeve being made integral with these parts by means of points obtained by pushing back the material constituting the sleeve 30 = near that the latter is engaged on the rna.nchon 26 and on the casing 15. In FIG. 2, as in fig. 1, the rod 41 is prevented from rotating by a catch 6 (FIG. 3) engaged in a groove 5 formed in this rod.
Oven the variant shown in fig. 2, recourse is had to an arrangement for which no material to be welded is used to connect the rod 41 to the cable 11 and to the sheath 12.
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
For this purpose, the end of the cable is formed by a loop 31 'and a groove 32 is provided in the rod 41, it being understood that the latter comprises a part 33 of reduced section similar to part 9 of FIG. 1. Before engaging the rod 41dans the tubular part 26, the loop 31 is engaged on the projection 34 formed by the groove 32 and the end of the sheath 12 is brought into contact with said projection. The other ends of the cable 11 and of the. sheath 12 together with the piano wire 18 in the same way as for fig. 1 and 4. The flexible transmission is then inserted into the casing 15 and into. the sleeve 26.
As the rod 41 has, for the diametral plane along which the groove 32 is established, a diameter substantially equal to the internal diameter of the sleeve, the loop 31 cannot be released from the projection 34, this arrangement allowing the easy removal of the sleeve. the rod 41 of said loop when the transmission is disengaged from the sleeve.
In fig. 6 has been shown another variant of the device according to which the active end of the flexible transmission is connected to the lever 37 to be controlled by a rigid rod 35 fixed to the cable 11 in the same way as the rod 4 or 41 (fig. 1 and 2) is fixed to said cable, this rod 35 then being guided by the end of the casing 15.
The end of the rod, which comes out of the casing 15, is articulated at 36 to the lever 37, articulated to a fixed axis 38 and which therefore moves in a manner analogous to the arm 19 shown in FIG. 1. When a rigid rod 35 is used, instead of a flexible end of the transmission, the flange 39 is mounted at a certain distance from the free end of the casing 15, this distance being at least sufficient to allow the displacement of the free end of this casing 15 laterally or in a longitudinal direction.
Assuming that all the elements occupy the position shown in solid lines, in fig. 5, it can be seen that a longitudinal compressive force on the cable moves the sheath 12 to the right and
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
rod 35 pushes back arm 37 and fulcrum 36 follows a circular line, the right end of rod 35 moves upward to the position shown in phantom. This is made possible by the fact that the free end of the casing 15 is free between its left end and the flange 29 and that it can flex upwards while continuing to guide the rod 35.
It is understood that the button 8 and the rod 4 or 41, which remotely control the arm 19 or 37, could be replaced by a similar arrangement at the end 17 of the transmission which comes out of the casing 15. (fig. 1 or 5). In addition, any other means can be used to control the rod 4, for example that shown in fig. 5, the arm 37 serving in this case as a control element and not as a controlled member. It is also possible to constitute an end of the transmission as shown in FIG. 5 and the other as shown in the lower part of FIG. 1.
The device according to the invention is more particularly suitable for engines for motor vehicles, or remote-controlled engines, for airplanes, etc.
As goes without saying, and as moreover already emerges from the foregoing, the invention is in no way limited to those of its modes of application nor to those of the embodiments of its various parts. having been more specially indicated; on the contrary, it embraces all the variants.
