<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

Perfect for devices used to cut leaves. in a stiff or hard material
The present investments relate to apparatus for cutting sheets of a stiff or hard material, such as, for example, fiber-cement and sheet iron, flat or corrugated.
The object of this invention is to provide a simple and economically constructed portable apparatus capable of being operated by hand or mechanically for cutting sheets of this nature easily and conveniently.
This object is achieved by means of the present invention, by providing an apparatus which comprises a frame having upper and lower jaws, joined at one end by a connecting piece preferably having a wedge shape placed in the extension of a knife capable of slide, mounted on the upper jaw, and can be operated by a lever, a crank or an eccentric so that it passes through
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
a recess or slit formed in the lower jaw; so that the part of the sheet which engages in the molds will be progressively cut off when the apparatus moves through this sheet, or else when the sheet is brought between the jaws.
The accompanying drawing shows a tool according to the present invention. fig. 1 is a side elevational view showing this tool held straight with the jaws in a vertical position.
The ig. 2 is an elevation seen from the right side of the fie. 1.
Fig. 5 is a section taken along line 3-3 of FIG. 1.
In the drawing, a and b represent the two jaws, a being the upper jaw when the tool is held in the usual position for a horizontal cut. The jaws a and b are connected to each other by a flat piece or connecting plate c, which has the shape of a wedge, as shown in fig. S and for a purpose which will be explained below.
A guide d is attached to the jaw a, one edge of which is parallel to an edge of the plate e and between its parallel edges is guided a knife e which moves in a groove made for this purpose in the jaw a. The jaw b also has a groove into which the cutting edge of the knife can penetrate. The cutting edge of the knife is oblique with respect to the parallel edges of the jaws in order to obtain a shearing effect.
The tool is provided with a handle f fixed to the jaw a, and to actuate the knife e, on this jaw is articulated in @ a lever with two arms, the small of which engages by a pin 1 in an opening j of the plate c. A rubber stopper k is attached to the front of the handle and serves as an elastic stopper, limiting downward movement of the lever.
By swinging the lever h, as indicated in fig 1 by a two-pointed arrow, the knife receives an alternating movement between its guides and passes through the slot which is between the Jaws a, b , so that when
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
there is a sheet in this slit, it is cut.
After each cut, the sheet is pushed towards the plate e, or the tool is pulled across the laminate so that the plate it enters the cut which is made in the sheet and which has sufficient width to accommodate this plate. the reason why the plate is given a wedge shape converging towards the front, is that this shape facilitates the execution of a curvilinear cutout, this plate can be slightly deflected while it is in the cut of the sheet.
For cutting fiber cement and other similar materials, it has been found that the best is to use a blunt-edged knife of thickness substantially less than the width of the slit in the lower jaw into which the knife cuts. - be so that a minimal gap remains on the sides of the knife when it enters.
For harder sheets, eg sheets of iron sheet, this interval is not desirable, since a more precise cut is required, but this can be obtained by means of the same tools placing between the jaws a thin steel plate having an opening which is centered exactly on the recess made in the lower jaw, but which is narrower than the latter, this plate then cooperating with the knife to cut the sheet. the steel plate should of course be attached for convenience to the lower jaw.
It will of course be understood that this tool may be shaped so as to be mechanically operated instead of hand operated, and in this case it will be attached to an appropriate bane. prayed. The hand operated tool can also be attached to a bench or to a support, if it is desired to advance the sheet during the cutting operation, instead of moving the tool across this sheet preferably the attachment. will be carried out in such a way as to allow a slight lateral oscillating movement of the tool, in order to avoid harmful forces being transmitted to the plate c in the event that the tool is operated without the required care.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
A spring can be placed between the handle and the lever, as is done with shears of many species, in order to allow the tool to be properly used with one hand.
