<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

According to the literature, trans-dichlorethylene should be regarded as the lowest boiling form and the "cis" form as the highest boiling form.
In the processes known until now for the manufacture of dichlereethylene, the two stereoisomeric forms are obtained in varying ratios and they are further mixed with other reaction products. A table contained in Austrian patent N271414 gives for a temperature of 30, a content of at most 17%, for a temperature of 1002, a content of at most 60% of the mixture of cis-dichloro-ethylene and of trans-dichloroethylene in the total reaction product. It is further pointed out that in the process described in this patent, in which one works with coke, charcoal or retort charcoal as the transfer body, the yield of dichlorethylene increases with the rise in temperature. .
It is therefore quite surprising, from these currently known results, that by choosing activated carbon as the transfer body or as the medium in which the reaction takes place, while retaining the known working method with an excess of acetylene, when acetylene and chlorine are combined, the lowest boiling dichlorethylene is obtained as the main product, and it is no less surprising that the most favorable formation temperatures for dichlorethylene are found in 1 is low temperature areas, i.e. below 150. If the reaction temperature is kept below 100. dichlorethylene forms in which the presence of the higher boiling point form cannot be demonstrated.
@n can moreover, in continuous operation, circulate the gases in circuit and withdraw e this circuit continuously dichlorethylene. The idealization of the process is
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
does something like this:
In a gas stream kept in circulation by means of a ventilator or the like and containing predominantly acetylene, roughly equal volumes of acetylene and chlorine are constantly mixed again.
The gases are passed through a container containing activated carbon, the grain size of which can be chosen at will.
The reaction products obtained are removed as completely as possible from the gases leaving the reaction vessel, for example with strong cooling. The gas mixture thus obtained and saturated with the vapors of the reaction produilE contains acetylene, traces of hydrochloric acid, indifferent gases which may be present and still unconsumed chlorine. This chlorine content must not, however, exceed a certain maximum value so that it does not result in fouling by soot or explosions, which can also be avoided, as is known, by a speed of high flow. It is advantageous, for economic reasons, to keep the chlorine content as low as possible and it is possible, for example, to keep it at 5%.
To prevent unwanted accumulation of indifferent gases, part of the gas may be released continuously or occasionally from the gas stream. The process can obviously also be carried out in the presence of inert gases.
The temperature in the carbon layer can be regulated not only by the quantity of ethylene and chlorine introduced again into the circulating gas but also by the flow rate at the discharge of the ventilator; the optimum temperature is around 40
The crude product flowing from the cooling device in the above process has a weak yellowish coloration or is water-clear, which already indicates that there is no formation of accessory products.

high molecule.
The dichlorethylene fraction obtained by distillation of the crude product is worth more than 90% of the total production and comes to a boil at 48-51 -; it therefore consists of almost completely pure trans-dichlorethylene.
