<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>
cylindre 9.
<Desc/Clms Page number 12>
<Desc/Clms Page number 13>
<Desc/Clms Page number 14>
<Desc/Clms Page number 15>

"Improvements to mechanisms for transporting containers"
The present invention relates to transport mechanisms and more particularly to a transport mechanism for glass containers and the like.
In the manufacture of glass containers such as tumblers, vases and the like, the article can be either press molded or press molded and blown. In either case, it is necessary to extract the containers or vessels from the manufacturing machine before they are completely cooled.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
say and while they are in a more or less plastic state.
To recilitate this operation in the case of press-molded articles, a movable piston passes through the bottom of the mold in order to remove the container from the mold when it is in a suitable state. Up to now and still now, workers use hand grippers to grab hot containers and carry them from the machine on a suitable conveyor.
The pressure applied to the plastic containers, by the pliers giving a runout to the container, which is very annoying during the subsequent sealing operations, In addition, pliers are frequently used as a convenient tool for all Uses, They fall to the ground and become loaded with filth that adhere to the container and baking on it.
One of the devices has been established in order to make unnecessary the constant presence of a worker assigned to this work by automatically operating the extraction of the containers and their deposit on a conveyor. These devices are of very complicated construction and relatively expensive. . In addition) they give only partially satistac- tion due to the breakage and deformation of the objects, It is necessary that the objects are grasped with sufficient pressure so that they are securely held and, in doing so, the mechanical grippers frequently significantly change the shape of the container as discussed above with respect to hand grippers.
Since most of the containers are used for packaging food and convenience foods
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
serve and that they must, therefore; be sealed with metal closures, it is important that the shape of the container conforms to that of a specific model, otherwise, during the unsealing operation the containers will be broken and their contents lost. Even if the containers manage to come out intact from the machines, to seal, it may form later) if they are defective, the gaskets are made and the packages will be damaged.
Clamps which contact the containers only on two sides of the latter deform the plastic containers and necessitate the disposal of a substantial proportion of them while causing sealing difficulties.
In many lids, the seal is made with the side wall of the receptacles and these gaskets cannot be suitably made with ovalized receptacles; The devices known until now have not succeeded in overcoming these difficulties.
Very often, especially in the case of press-molded articles, the opening of the container is undoubtedly larger than the bottom of the latter. When containers of this kind are placed upright on conveyors, it is not uncommon for them to tip over as a result of the jolts which accompany their movement and because of the narrowness of their base. There is therefore an advantage in that they are arranged in the opposite direction.
Various conveyor devices have already tried different ways of realizing this advantage, but extremely complicated constructions have resulted, the disadvantages of which outweighed their advantages.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
The object of the present invention is to substantially simplify the devices used heretofore for transporting the containers from the manufacturing machines to the conveyors, to avoid the deformation and breakage of the containers during transport operations as a result of '' a faulty grip, to have a gripping member as a transport mechanism, by which balanced forces are applied to the container and prevent it from being deformed, to provide a device capable of securely holding the containers by not entering in contact with these only by one side, to establish mechanism! handling of containers which is easily applicable to pre-existing machines,
capable of operating in combination with very different containers in both ton and size and bring them to a circulating conveyor at any desired level.
Other advantages of the invention will become apparent in the course of the following description of a particularly advantageous embodiment, and various advantages not mentioned here will become apparent to the technician from practical use. of the invention.

The present embodiment of the invention is shown as applied to a common form of glassware making machine, comprising suitable molds in which the plastic glass is pressed to form containers. From a device to such a machine is shown as one of the many possible applications of the invention.
The device 'is intended to ensure the de-molding, while they are in a somewhat plastic state, of mechanical glassware objects such as
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
cups, and place them upside down on a nearby conveyor, usually on a different level. These operations are entirely automatic and do not in any way slow down the operation of the manufacturing machine with which they are moreover in synchronized relation. The containers are securely held during transport operations and, at the same time, the applied pressures are balanced, which eliminates any tendency for deformation or alteration of their contour.
Referring to the drawings, there is shown a faoricatior machine 1 for molded articles such as glass containers and the like, with parts broken away for clarity. A rotary molding table 2 is indicated as part of the manufacturing machine and is preferably a common form of intermittent motion table on which a series of molds are arranged 4. The pressing and casting mechanisms, which do not form part of this inrentions, have not been shown.
Fig. 2 shows in section a stationary mold where the extractor considered here is involved. The mold can have any desired shape, but it preferably comprises an upper member 5 provided with a piston 6 terminated at its upper part by a head which fits into the bottom of the mold, of which it ensures the sealing. On arrival at the extraction stop, the molded container 7 is lifted vertically by a pneumatic cylinder 9 which actuates a piston rod 10 so that it comes into contact with the lower end of the piston 6 in view.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
to release the container from the mold, as indicated in dotted lines in fig. 2.
An arm 11 is mounted on the piston rod 10 and is able to slide on the threaded vertical rod 12 until it reaches the upper limit of its stroke, determined by the nuts 13. These nuts 13 make it possible to adjust the height of which the container can be lifted above the mold. Suitable air ducts 14 are attached to the upper and lower ends of the cylinder, respectively, for operation.
It will be appreciated that when the table is stationary, min mold occupying the position indicated in fig. 2 and the piston 6 being above the piston rod 10, air is admitted through the lower end of the cylinder in order to release the cup from the mold, This done, air is admitted to the upper part of the cylinder in order to lower the piston. This operation is repeated each time the successir molds come to a standstill at this stop.
During the next phase of operation, the lifted container is brought to a nearby conveyor. At this feeetn; there is mounted in the vicinity of the molding table a column 16 provided with an elongated rotating sleeve 17 capable of rotating around the vertical shaft 18. At the upper end of the column is arranged a horizontal arm 19 comprising a hollow tube 20 screwed into the sheath 17. On the tube 20 and so as to be able to turn on it is mounted a telescopic tube 21 the elm of two parts screwed together so as to form a bearing for an enlarged part of the tube.
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
inner tube.
A jaw 23 is suitably attached to the free end of the arm. At the inner end of the tube 21 is formed a pinion 24 intended to cooperate with the pegs 25 screwed into the rixed collar 26 of the column 1. At the same time as the vertical sleeve 17 turns around the shaft 18, the horizontal arm 19 and jaw 23 oscillate above the molding table.
In order for the device to function satisfactorily, the movements of the jaw must
23 are in synchronous relation with those of the molding table. This result can be obtained in any suitable way by means of the arm 28 and the connecting rod 28. A separate pen patic cylinder can be used for this purpose, or else the connecting rod 29 can be directly connected to the mechanism generally used to ensure the intermittent rotation of the table.
Excellent results have been obtained in each case, but the use of a separate pneumatic cylinder gives more flexibility to the apparatus.
Although the jaw 23 can take on various shapes, it is shown here as having a curved face member 31 in which a series of openings 32 are made. The jaw can be entirely metallic as shown in FIG. , 1, in which case very hot containers do not take long to bring the jaw to the desired temperature so that the metal does not harm the containers. If desired, the face of the jaw can be provided with a pad of circulating material 34, as shown in Fig. 5.

This pad acts as a cushion against which the container can rest and, at the same time, it prevents the heat from dissipating too quickly. Asbestos has given excellent results in this connection, but other categories of material may be satisfactory.
Another form of jaw is shown in FIG. 6 in which the face of the jaw is provided with a buffer 34 having a series of pockets 39 formed around the openings 32. This can be achieved by arranging, as indicated, vertical ribs 40 and horizontal ribs. 41. Regardless of the type of jaw chosen, the container need not be in close contact with the entire face of the jaw. Pull from a small number of openings 32 is sufficient to hold a container securely in position.
At the rear of the plug 34 and communicating, in each case, with the openings 32 is disposed a chamber 35 connected by the intermediary of the tube 21 and the hollow shaft 18 with a vacuum pipe 38. On, on the The vacuum chamber preferably acts the vacuum 55 as the container 7 is withdrawn from the mold, which causes the openings 32 to securely hold the container in its position when the jaw contacts it. As atmospheric pressure keeps the container tightly pressed against the curved portion of the jaw, there is no tendency for the container to warp. On the other hand, there is a tendency towards keeping the vase in its cylindrical shape.

While the lever 28 describes the arc of a circle shown in FIG. 1, the jaw 23 comes into contact with the containers which are successively lifted as indicated in FIG. 2 and carries them to the carrier. During this movement, the pinion 24 cooperates with the pegs 25 and would rotate the jaw clockwise in order to overturn the reel at the same time as it carries it horizontally.
It is preferable that the onion 24 does not engage with the pegs 25 until the jaw grips the container; this allows the jaw to freely adapt to the container at the instant of contact.
To receive the containers and place them on a conveyor 11 is provided a movable support 44 vertically mounted on the piston rod 45 of a pneumatic cylinder 461-An air duct 47 terminating at the upper end of this. The cylinder can be connected to the press cylinder so that the support 44 descends to the proper position when the jaw has placed a container on it. The line terminating at the lower end of cylinder 46 may be connected via a click actuated valve 43 when the container pusher reaches its return position, so that the holder 44 is normally in its proper position. extreme upper position.
It is obvious that any other suitable mechanism can be used to impart to the support 44 the desired movement in synchronism with that of the jaw and the molding table. A suitable arm 48 may be provided so as to slide on the threaded rod 49, as previously described with respect to the

cylinder 9. The locking nuts 50 determining the upper limit of the vertically movable table by their contact with the arm 48.
There is provided a suitable table 51 in which is established a bearing surface for receiving the movable support 44 so that the upper surface of the latter matches the surface of the table when the support occupies its maximum lowered position. A conveyor 52 is located at the same level as the table 51 and, as a result, the containers slide off the table onto the conveyor. There is provided for this purpose a suitable push- is comprising an arm 54 fixed to a cylinder rod 55 and movable along guides 56. The arm 54 comes and comes so as to slide the containers of. lowered support 44 on the conveyor 52.
The air ducts 58 and 59 terminating respectively at the inner and outer ends of the cylinder 57 may be ordered in any suitable manner, but, preferably, the duct at the inner end is. controlled by means of a click located at the lower part of the cylinder 46.
This click may comprise a pin 60 penetrating into the lower end of the cylinder, its other end forming a valve held in its raised position by means of a spring 61. At the moment when the vertically movable table 44 reaches its extreme lower position, rod 60 is depressed and air is admitted through line 58 into the inner end of cylinder 57. The outer end of the cylinder.
can be arranged so as to be triggered directly when the pusher 54 is in

its extreme position, the container being on the conveyor. Any other suitable means may be used to actuate the cylinder in order to obtain the results described above.
In some cases, it may happen that the delivery mechanism does not work properly and that a residue of glass remains in the molds; on the other hand it is also possible that, for one reason or another, the extractor does not work. In either case, either a molded object or a remainder of glass will remain in the mold. If the moale comes back again containing the article and glass is again molded into it, it is quite obvious that the article obtained will be defective. To remedy this, there is established here a pneumatic cylinder 64 comprising a rod 65 provided at its end with a curved member 66 intended to move on the glass molds at the stop which immediately follows the extraction stop. .
A pneumatic mechanism similar to that of the extraction stopper is provided for lifting the piston 6 in order to remove the glass or the remainder of the glass from the mold. When it is in its raised position, the bent member 66 sweeps and blows up everything (which may still remain in the mold. If nothing remains in the mold, the movement is simply carried out empty.
In service, the molding table 2 is actuated intermittently, as previously, and stops so that its molds are placed successively above the pneumatic cylinder 9. As soon as each mold is properly placed, the cylinder 9 acts as a way

to lift the pistons 6, raising the receptacle 7 to the position indicated in dotted lines in fig. 2. At this moment, the jaw 23 is put into oscillation by the sleeve 17? the ores 28 and the connecting rod 29 so as to come into contact with the soalevé container, At the moment of making contact, the vacuum acts through the conduit 38 so as to attract the container against the surface of the jaw and to keep it in this position while the jaw continues to move.
After the container is gripped, the pinion 24 wedged on the end of the horizontal arm, carrying the jaw, cooperates with the pins 25 so as to rotate the jaw The container is brought from position A above the piston 6 to the position B above table 44, where it is found to have undergone a rotation of 180, as indicated in fig. 4.
At this moment, the vacuum is stopped and air is allowed to enter, in order to free the container.
The movable table 44, normally in its raised position, is at. convenaole level to receive the container, and it is actuated by the cylinder 46 so as to deposit the container in position C on the fixed table 51. As soon as the container is released from the jaw 23, the latter can freely return to position to grab another receptacle When the receptacle has been lowered to the level of the table 51, the pusher 54, actuated by the cylinder 57, brings the receptacle to position D on the moving conveyor 52, arriving at the end of its course, the pusher is automatically recalled and, during this time,
jaw

23 has been returned to its original position by the connecting rod
29 while the table was brought to the next stop.
The safety device comprising the air cylinder 64 acts on each stationary mold which immediately follows the extraction stop, where the piston 6 is lifted as described above and the bent member. 66 is moved on the piston so as to blow the. glass which may eventually remain in the mold.
This cycle repeats each time the mold table presents a new mold.
It will be appreciated that the embodiment described herein and that the contemplated invention allowing, by simple construction and efficient operation, the removal of containers from commercial type manufacturing machines, and particularly from intermittent advance molding tables, it will be appreciated. The container remover, because it is single-jawed, cannot deform the plastic glass object. The pressures applied to the container to hold it in place are substantially balanced and this is why there is no tendency to deformation of finite objects. As the jaws are integral with the machine, there is no risk of them taking on improper handling and, therefore, the objects remain clean.
The present mechanism does away with the costly and complicated mechanisms heretofore designed for this same purpose.
At the same time, the results obtained are much more satisfactory than with any other known machine. Mechanism elements are easily obtained in an ordinary glassware installation

and can be built inexpensively. It is not necessary to resort to specialized labor either for the service or for the construction of the devices.
In addition, the machine is of robust construction and can withstand the harsh service conditions to which it can be subjected.
As many modifications can be made to the above embodiment, it should be understood that all of the details herein are to be considered as being illustrative and not limiting.
